  • Since moving to the new homestead we have been expanding our gardening space each year. The soil here is.....not good, so, we will need to build healthier garden soil over time. We have used a similar process at the farm and what you end up with is healthy, nutrient rich, organic matter rich, soil that will grow you the absolute best garden plants.

Really enjoyed the video. It was straight to the point, very informative, and no silly music, etc. in the background. Just good honest Hardwork and some great instruction. I am a fairly new farmer on 12 acres in the south Cariboo of British Columbia Canada. I have a lot of trees, but I believe the soil in my area is pretty rich. I’m looking forward to getting it started this fall. Thanks for the video!

Is it odd to say I miss all the equipment repair videos? I know how good it feels to turn the key and the tractor works.

On some permaculture sites, they say that tilling the soil damages it, which includes killing earthworms. They suggest cornmeal and coffee grounds to attract earthworms and repel pests (respectively), with a top layer of leaves and such over the winter. What have you heard? I grew up tilling, so it was kind of surprising to me.

Well I would say yes and no. The area I started with here, this was just dirt and sand and rocks, not soil. There were no worms and no organic material. So, I wasn't damaging anything by tilling. Once you have healthy established soil, I prefer to cover with fresh wood chips each year and let it be. I may mix up some small areas but reduce tilling as your soil gets healthy.

Have you considered using your chickens to produce compost for you? Adding all of the compost materials inside the chicken yard, and piling it up. Lets the chickens play and scratch and break down the pile. Pile it back up, and repeat until the chickens don't have an interest in it anymore. Then make another pile and let the other one rest. Repeat. Feeds the chickens and makes compost for you!

Another way for compositing is organic food scrapes...
**I asked my friend over in Minnesota about what breed of pigs they had, and they had regular pigs(various breeds) and they all foraged.

Haven’t had good results from adding wood bedding, wood chips and chicken manure to soil unless decomposed for at least 1-2 years. Any decomposing wood material may rob your plants of nitrogen until fully decomposed. You may also want to check your PH and possibly add some lime. Chicken urine is acidic.
Adding worms is always a huge plus but takes time. Building good soil takes years but getting fully decomposed humus from your local town or county is brilliant and pretty inexpensive. Mix it with course sand for excellent soil.

I have found that if you keep the soil wet and cover paths and around plants with wood chips the organisms will break those pine shavings down quick. The waste from the worms and other decomposers is rich in nitrogen. Acidic soil is great for most plants! I try to keep the pH about 5.5-6.

My soil is simply horrible, and I’ve been trying to use a Green Stalk, but I just haven’t been having luck with anything beyond Collards and Kohlrabi.
I made the initial mistake of starting with Miracle Gro mix, and I suspect that’s a big part of why I can’t seem to grow much. Also my water is incredibly hard, so perhaps that has something to do with it as well. Would all that calcium run the soil?
Hey, where has your adorable Shadow been lately? That girl has way too much energy to be staying indoors all the time! ☺️

Hard well water has a high pH, the more organic material you add and the more decomposers that are present will help to lower the pH but you may want to check that. Most garden plants (except for legumes) like a lower pH

You should’ve grown mushrooms in all that hay.
