SYNOPSIS
Donna Summer was in the midst of the disco peak in her career when her producer and long time collaborator Giorgio Moroder asked her to record a cover version of ‘MacArthur Park’, a track written by Jimmy Webb and originally performed by Richard Harris.
Moroder had been looking for a 60s track to give a disco makeover for a good while when he heard ‘MacArthur Park’ on the radio and decided it would be a perfect fit for Summer. Summer at that stage just had major success with singles like ‘Last Dance’ and ‘I Feel Love’.
‘MacArthur Park’ became one of the bigger hits in Donna Summer’s impressive career, hitting number 1 in the US and Canada and reaching top 10 in numerous other countries, outperforming the original in the charts.
Summer recorded the song in a couple of different versions, the original being over 8 minutes long, but a more radio friendly version about half the length made sure that the track became the hit it deserved to be.

THE SOUNDTRACK
A classic by Richard Harris in 1968, and then another classic made by Donna Summer in 1978. Here's a version I've had in my collection since the Disco Era.
When the original album was released, the "MacArthur Park Suite" was stitched around "Heaven Knows" and "One Of A Kind". The 45RPM Disco single released for club play, contained some instrumentation which was quite different from the Album.
Here I've melded together just "MacArthur Park" to create and even longer [complete] version. So sit back and enjoy all 10 minutes and 47 seconds of "MacArthur Park"!

LYRICS
Spring was never waiting for us, dear
It ran one step ahead
As we followed in the dance
Between the parted pages and were pressed,
In love's hot, fevered iron
Like a striped pair of pants
Mac Arthur's park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down...
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that i can take it
cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, nooooo
I recall the yellow cotton dress
Foaming like a wave
On the ground beneath your knees
Birds like tender babies in your hands
And the old men playing Chinese checkers by the trees
MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down...
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, nooooo
Ah-ha
There will be another song for me
And I will sing it
There will be another dream for me
Someone will bring it
I will drink the wine while it is warm
And never let you catch me looking at the sun
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves in my life
You'll still be the one.
I will take my life into my hands and I will use it
I will win the worship in their eyes and I will lose it
I will have the things that I desire
And my passion flow like rivers from the sky.
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves in my life
You'll still be the one
And I ask myself why?
Yeah

Thank you Donna to be part of some of the good times of my life.
The only version of Macarthur park
You need.
Agreed!
I love both versions. They are amazing! Getting tears as I'm typing. Go got to go now before I lose the cake otherwise, I will never get that loving recipe.
This version of MacArthur Park reminds me of Cathedral High in L.A., 1979. My best friend Lando Izquierdo RIP and I were in the basketball gym for a dance. We were at the top of the bleachers when this song began playing. He started singing the song almost from the top of his head as if he was Donna Summer...unbelievable! Damn! I miss him so much and the memories we had at Cathedral High. RIP Lando until we meet again!
Nice to hear the full version.
Rest in peace, Donna.
Along with having an awesome voice, Donna was a very intelligent woman.
Breathtakingly beautiful too ❤❤❤❤
It's amazing that you can take a classic by British actor Richard Harris, jazz it up with a disco beat, and have "Disco Quee"n Donna Summer belt it out with so much feeling.
Richard Harris was actually Irish (from Limerick, Ireland). He spent the majority of his career living and working in the UK, but he never took British citizenship and was very vocal about his pride in being Irish. He was longtime friends with fellow actor Peter O’Toole (who was born in England to parents of Scottish and Irish descent), and the stories of their drinking, drugging, and carousing are the stuff of legends. (Harris was eventually able to stop his drug use, and significantly curbed his drinking in the last couple of decades of his life, although he did still drink the occasional Guinness.)
@@crystalp7242 Richard Harris is Magnificent & one of my Favorite all time actors!💜
Disco never got better than this!
This song never gets old. Thanks.
This song is so old.
Can't wait to see a bio movie about Donna---she certainly deserves one.
NEVER will there ever be another QUEEN like her. RIP, beautiful Donna Summer.
Everrrrr! 🙌🏽
I love the "ah ha!", it's so full of feminine power. My pa brought me up knowing this song - all the versions.
Brilliant song 🎶
… Donna is definitely one of the 5 best singers in the world! ... The voice 🔥 is phänomenal and unique!! …For me personally, Donna and Angelina Jordan are the best ✨💎✨ Thank you
In it's 46th year of release, I never tire of listening to this masterpiece. Donna Summer's best song as it showcases her incredible range perfectly. Deservedly a US#1 for 3 weeks in November 1978.
Merci pour ce petit joyau des années 70 💝
Masterpiece.
Agree😊
She did a brilliant job on this. As did Sir Richard!!!

Beetlejuice, beetlejuice, the miscreant.
I've known it since 2015. That said, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice used both versions to great effect nonetheless though.

This is the original and very first "MacArthur Park" Donna Summer's version ever, in wich it was recorded in one take without any practice before (10:41 mins).
* Esta es la versión original y primera de "MacArthur Park" por Donna Summer, la cual se grabó de una sola toma, sin práctica o ensayo previo (10:41 mins).
Giorgio Moroder made a wonderful mix including "One Of A Kind" and "Heaven Knows", and the unique spectacular final production was "MacArthur Park Suite"; a great musical Master Piece.

Love this song since 1979! One of my favorites from Donna.
I was watching Beetlejuice when this song came on and I went hysterical. I remember the disco's in the 70's and partying all night and day😂❤❤❤
Already loved this song, but after seeing the movie decided to look it up on TH-cam
Checking in 10/24! Let's Rock this Night Out!
Super!
very breath taking wonderful song
Maybe, possibly the finest line in the song is "And I'll ask myself why.." When it was released back in 78 some parts really stood out. That was definitely one.
When songs lasted for half an hour 😃
What we found as my first love a freind i had kbown once gone but never forgotten
A girlfreind who died she used to play this for me my first girlfreid
Prayers For Healing Many Blessings...
I love this song for many reasons: how great Donna Summer sang this one!, that it lasts 10 minutes, that the brass section in two or three parts played , i think, maybe tritone relations? (F# and C, i think) which sounds epic, and the track is dramatic, epic and danceable. Wish the pop music these days was like those days!
I love the 2 key changes just before the final verse (at 09:02).
Brilliant!
Disco Queen ❤
She hss a uniqueness You just can't top
Brilliantly done. Breathtaking.
RIP 💔 🙏 Angel, I miss you 😢
Wow love this song❤
THIS is the definitive version or Fight ME.
Great Lady ❤
Great music ❤
She was heaven..no.no.blues. ❤❤❤❤❤
Donna outdid Richard Harris 1967-68 version of this song by several miles. For sure. All the royalties should go to Donna. Such a modern masterpiece. Farewell Donna and Casablanca records for such music genius. RIP. Danceable and memorable. Thanks, Donna Summer, Bruce, and Giorgio. Vive les pop rock, ballad, and disco freaks ....
Don't forget Jimmy Webb wrote this beautiful song about a failed romance. All of the metaphors relate to something real in his life.
(All the sweet green icing flowing down) and (Someone left the cake out in the rain)!
Beautiful words.
Another one of those howdufuq-did-I-forget-this-existed moments. Internet says disco sucks. Disco says internet sucks.
REST IN POWER Abdul Fakir of the FOUR TOPS Blessings and HUGS! 👑💜
Uma obra prima e que voz !!!! ❤❤
Unforgettable baby.....great singer.
From minute 3'50" to 5'00" is some of the best of Donna
Yes! The bridge is everything!
The best
You are the best n legend Rip
Love this song !
Was this version released in the 70's or is this a new edit? Great version, regardless.
It's an exact recreation of a DJ edit I heard in a club back in the late 70's.
Essentially the 45 RPM single, album and Disco single were all merged together.
@@spetragl well yes, clearly .Beginning, Middle, End.
The lyrics have such a deep meaning that we need to meditate on. The disco music is awesome but the lyrics are even greater.
Awesome.
4:38 is my favorite part
YES ME TOO!!!!!!
...chissà se avremo un altra Donna Summer??...così come Tina Turner, Amy Winehouse ed altri ancora...
I'm inclined to agree with most that she is incomparable....
When mom says you can listen to one more song before bed.
I love your seamless music segment arrangements starting at 8:19 to 9:20. Amazing talent. Nice work. 💎✨
I aged!!! It’s phenomenal!!! 💃👏😊
Richard Harris brought me here!

I like Donna summers
Fab song weird lyrics
Original lyrics written by Jimmy Webb, performed by Gordon Lightfoot. Marvelous remake by Donna Summer!
Donna summers
The original song was from the 60s and it was either an extremely brilliant, or extremely childlike, depending on your perspective. Some say the song was so big, it was LSD inspired. The guy who sang the 60s version was not a trained singer he was a renowned actor somehow.these are two very different versions of the same song than trying to mimic it
The original singer was Richard Harris.
La mejor época
Banger ❤
The. Best
The first time I heard this very beautiful song and superb melody was on a Four Tops CD at the end of the 80s, the singer's superb voice, tailor-made for this song :

They really need to update the dance collection of Donna Summer.
Why??? It has this version together with One of a kind and Heaven knows in a stunning 18mins version!!!
