    I think that it was a good move to make the car safer, and last longer.

    Oh, this has taken me back forty years to the sills on my Renault 16! First "repair" involved a section of a forty gallon oil drum and pop rivets followed by underseal - and then when the left hand rear torsion bar bearing broke away from the inner box section (because Renault) my father and I fitted two new pattern sills but he also had to make up a huge inner strengthener because it had rotted just like the Picasso's had. The car was welded with gas, so fire did happen on more than one occasion. God, I miss that car... great sound track, by the way!!

    Thanks for the hours of toil you spent on keeping pass on the road for a bit longer - it was great to see how bad the sill was, how much metal you had to cut our and replace and for the lesson that weld quality needs good preparation (and not terrible metal) ... and the electric file (grinder) is a key part to making welds look better

    I bought a £400 2.0 HDI Picasso a couple of years ago - the home trader seller said he’d put 12m mot on but he just had to do this same part of the sill. Few days later I pick the car up and he admitted it was a horrible nasty job.
    Completely fell in love with the car though, they are a skip on wheels that can be parked anywhere. It felt cheap on the inside but not in an annoying way - it was just very honest about it’s purpose. I’d love another, not many 2.0D’s left though… which is a shame because that motor suited the car.

    I just did a pretty major welding job on my elgrand (check my last vid if you so please) and everything takes 8 times longer than you think. I felt your pain when you said making the outer skin out of two parts would suck, I had to, I've got no way to bend a sheet of metal that long. So then I had to spend hours matching the bends, getting them flush, welding them flush, grinding flush etc. I refuse to overlap welds, everything was flush. frigging nightmare.
    When you said I'm gonna try do it under an hour, I was thinking 'hes having a laugh'. You still did it faster than I imagined even if it 'only' took you 5ish hours.

The sills were bad on that car and to get it thr' the MOT he got his staff to help make paper mashie paste which we placed on those sills. I feel your pain, I was a welder in an MOT station and some of the old repairs I had to cut away to do a proper repair were incredible. A Mercedes’ came in and had three cover calls welded over each other. I ended up stripping out the interior to replace the inner cill front to back then the strengthening membrane and then the outer cill. I had phoned the owner and got the ok to do this, he had bought the car a week earlier with a months test on it and brought it to us to check out. Did the one side and he arranged to get the other done the following month. The tales that repair shops could tell you would scare you shi*less.

    Front end of my next van is looking good there towards the end😉😆😆 ….…… and as for the patch? (#patchthepicasso 😆) I’ve seen long term jobs from others that claimed to be “professionals” look far, far worse……. One of them including a garage that put sills on my old T2 camper…..and they melted/ set fire to the cool box lining in the process….. I’ve never been too busy to do my own repairs since! 🙄🙄

    A re-remap is actually a de-map?
    When you said under an hour you meant elapsed time on the video? 🙂 Fair play its taken me two years to do one side of my own car...

    It was good of you to do that. It just needs a tidy up. I wonder how many more gas boilers are going to end up in car bodies once this heat pump rubbish gets enforced?

    So despite Spain still having a steel industry the steel they use at the Citroen factory is crap compared to what the French used for the BX.
    If you were doing that rushed internal repair for a customer on a budget then the time saved would completely justify the rough and ready patchwork quilt approach, especially as you say when a decent outer sill can be bought to make the outside look perfect.

    • @UPnDOWN
      @UPnDOWN ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess it's just down to cost, but the metal is awful to weld to, whereas the BX is nice.
      I wouldn't do it for a customer, to be honest. If budget prevented them doing it properly, I'd suggest they took it to someone else. I'm still not happy with this one now!
