Belgrade fortress Kalemegdan | Upper Town - the main witness of 2000 years of history | Serbia 2019

The third day of travel to Belgrade on the May holidays 2019. Inspection of the Belgrade fortress, from the walls and towers of which there are picturesque views of the confluence of the rivers Sava and Danube. Inside the fortress we look at the following sights of the Upper Town:

Belgrade fortress originated in the I century. Some sources tend to believe that the building was built several centuries earlier. Most of the buildings date back to the 18th century, although inside the fortifications there are traces of the Roman and Byzantine eras. For such a long time, they fought for the fortress more than 100 times, 44 times it was destroyed and rebuilt. Today, most of the territory is landscaped park.
The fortress (in Serbian “Beogradska tvrђav”) includes Upper and Lower Town, as well as Kalemegdan Park, therefore it is sometimes called “Kalemegdan Fortress”. The location of the fortress at the confluence of two rivers - the Danube and the Sava - is strategically advantageous: it is easy to see the plain from here, so the first settlements were founded here in ancient times. And today, from the fortress a picturesque view opens up of the confluence of the rivers and the city.
The name "Kalemegdan" comes from the Turkish language: "Kale" is a fortress, "meghdan" is a field.
