I absolutely love my Helikon Tex Numbat. Bought it after your review a few years ago cheers dude. Day 85 Chemo and still going strong- except in the mornings. 🤙
Thanks for the comment mate. I have a couple of mantras that I recite on days like today, because I “hit” a wall today. One comes from the Shawshank Redemption. You know the one, “Get busy living, or get busy dying.”👍
I've got the older version of this and it looks better, the front is all velcro so you can attach light stuff or you can put some patches on. It has mesh on the back, (so Osprey do know better) and the back harness is much better ventilated. This new version really does look like Osprey took several steps backward.
I wear a chestrig when mine exploring underground. This one could use molle on the front to mount a headlamp or articulating light to. The shiny is the biggest downside along with the breathability.
I’m a big fan of osprey. They carried me 1/2 way through my thru-hike in 1999. I reverted to my camp trails external pack halfway to my thruhike goal. It broke in New Hampshire but was strong for a decade.
Thanks for the really good honest review. I can see where it would be hot. And yes, it does look like a shiny purse. Another thing I would have liked to have seen with the Osprey is if the dual zippers for the main compartment would come all the way to the bottom corner on each side. That would allow easier access to a CCW. Nice purse Luke, cough, cough. Stay safe and God bless.
Nice review Luke, thank you. For me any pack, including chest packs, requires a trampoline back for summer use. I have an Osprey Syncro 20 daypack with a trampoline back which helps reduces sweat when the temps hit 90-110 in my area.
I came into the video thinking it would be something cool to consider buying in the future. Now I am thinking an 80/90s retro fanny pack might work better. Thanks for the review Luke!
While I definitely understand your points for your usage, I think it's worth nothing for other potential buyers that the Archeon line is designed with commuters and students in mind before hiking/outdoors, particularly tech-heavy users. I'm not a huge fan of the shininess either, but the features of the line as a whole are really outstanding in that area, and make the odd luster more than worth it for me. As a programmer, I haul around a laptop, charging cables, and external data storage on the daily, and the other products in this line really feel like they're designed to let me get those items in and out in the most organized manner possible. So yeah, not the most tactical of Osprey's work, but very functional in the areas it's designed for.
Purchased the Helikon-Tex NUMBAT, directly related to your review of that product years ago, still have it, still love it. Bummer about the Osprey, have a few back packs, work and function well.
This man is one of the most methodical well prepared people iv seen in camping videos brilliant 👏 👏 not to mention coolest looking 😂 love watching the videos
You mentioned that there are two colours, black and the green one that you have. The black one may be better not only that the sheen may dull over time with use. What ever brand you buy they can be useful and convenient for carrying necessary things without having a hip bag or rucksack. Also leaving hand's free.
good review and I agree on the shiny thing not being my jam either. I was also curious if Osprey plans to make chest packs that go with their other backpacks - popular ones like the Atmos pack. Thanks for saving us money with the great review. I love Osprey but sounds like they need to fine tune this product in a few places.
You can get a rifleman's set used pretty cheap. I promise you a LBV with a pouch attachment is going to be way more comfortable. That was my set up in the Field.
Luke can you do a chest rig dump? I would like to know how you use that when you camp. I have seen bits and piece of what you do on your trips. I have recently bought me on but would like to see what you put in it.
Chest rigs like that or the numbat would be good for the elderly, disabled and handicapped. Those who still prefer purses but can no longer wear them on their shoulders.
I bought the Helicon Tex “Numbat” off your recommendation a couple of years ago and it’s been fantastic. Great for swapping out camera lenses on the go when your hands are full. Great for hiking. A bit pricey $ in our part of the world, but worth it long term. 😊👍
You should check out the FHF Gear chest rig. I have the Gen 1 and love it, and the newer version and water repellant versions look better yet than the original one.
I looked at this chestpack but decided not to buy because of the shiny fabric you are right on about the fabric appearance.. I went with the 511 chestpack and love it. I also didn't like the lack of ventilation.
Osprey sells this under their campus and commute line. So not really for outdoor/hiking/backpacking. Maybe try it for an airport instead. Easy hack to add more as your carry on. Your tastes are super bro if you don't like that style/color/ material. I would look at pack systems that are actually for the outdoors first and you won't be so disappointed. And taste/style is super subjective, so most people will take your biggest complaint hopefully with a grain of salt.
This may be the first time where I can’t agree with your negative concerns. The shiny material may not be aesthetically pleasing, but, I have to assume that it sheds water well and resists stains too. If clipping on to a backpack, you aren’t as likely to be concerned about stealth. I personally see a well built pack that may do well under a ghillie rig for turkey or larger prey. 😉 As always, I hold your views in extremely high regard. I just hope that maybe I can offer a new angle to view this item in. Only because, you can’t be personally expected to think of every iteration that this item may be used in. Take care as always Luke! Keep it going. Send your warmest regards to Tony at ABCamping. He just lost his newest furry camping pup. Be well, Strength and honor always. 🫡
I don't like to buy more gear than I need but when I need to have extra space up front I use my paraglider deck pack. woody valley, great quality, similar features and it rides off your hip belt.
I have just ordered the Helikon NUMBAT CHEST PACK and can't wait to use it. I'm a Osprey backpack fan and would have liked to stay loyal, but it is not up to the mark, so gone for the Helikon.
Having my carry piece in any kind of chest rig just seems too awkward to draw. In addition it just looks too tactical. I have mine in a front-mounted fanny pack carried at waist level. It is also in a bright color which looks more innocuous. As a test I carried it into Disneyland (without the carry piece of course). No one took any notice of it.
Unfortunately, chest packs are becoming a fashion trend. For that reason, I think Osprey tried to make this chest pack look like Gucci or something. Trying to appeal to younger customers. I have a chest pack too. Honestly the price point for this chest pack is high and also that webbing that it has when you open it up puts me off to it. My chest pack doesn't have that, which enables me to grab my firearm quickly and not at an odd angle. That webbing would prohibit quick movement. I would have to open the pack up fully in order to insert my hand and grab it out. I understand why they put it there to stop the pack from falling open.
I just use one of the side pouches from my Berghaus Centrino. I clip it on to the main packs shoulder straps with carabiners. I didn't want to buy extra gear, plus this works great anyway. The Centrino is very versatile, I've found it to be the only pack I need 👍 Cheers for the video. Atb
Luke, great video!!! Could you post a link to the t-shirts that you wear in your gear list? I have been looking for the same t-shirts and can't find the brand. Thanks!!!
I bought the Helikon Tex Numbat also, No problems with it except I had to extend the side straps, I mean cut and sew in longer pieces of strapping. Other than that it a great insurance carrier while out on the ebike.
I coveted their prior version for awhile. I get the feeling that they are going for a more urban, travel audience with the new one. The archeon series was more of an European market thus a different design language.
Nice review on this failed Bling Bag, Luke. Although I will take your word for how shiny it is, it only comes across more sheeny than shiny on camera. You can see it from certain angles, though. Too bad they decided to do that. The EVA foam back is a deal breaker for me. If anyone here has tried other non breathable rigs out there you will know that in just a few minutes the area your rig was sitting against gets sweat soaked quickly. There is one other aspect about this rig concerning an item you said you carry sometimes and do not want to talk about much in regard to personal protection that was not mentioned. There is no velcro panel or straps to secure a holster for this item and if you need that then this also is not the rig for you. So I would imagine the sheen is not the only downside here. Luckily there are other rigs for this need as well as not being shiny from Hill People, 5.11, Viktos, etc. that does a better job, (although a bit pricier). I will say that the construction looks nice on it so if they change materials, add a strap/velcro internal/external panels, and Add A Mesh back panel and back strap panel, they might be competitive with other brands. For now, the others have a clear advantage, especially the ones with mesh ventilation.
What I’ve been looking for is something similar with an out side rear pocket/compartment with open sides that would conceal a firearm. Essentially a chest rig that doesn’t look like a chest rig, that I can quickly reach behind into that compartment and…. viola…
I'm not big on shiny things either. But i usually put functionality over looks. In my case, I would still be happy with my purchase if return wouldn't be an option.
I was lucky back then to get a Ribz large chest pack that I use when it’s not too hot out there. Otherwise I use two Onewind ridgeline bags it’s super ultralight) that I attach on my backpack on each side, along my ribs; it carries each a 1 litre platypus soft bottles.
It's too big, gonna make your front and back sweat so much I'd rather just run a backpack like Mystery Ranch Bridger with the shoulder pockets or a sling like patagonia atom. I run the HPG medium SAR kit bag during rucks and while it's not as comfy as a spacer mesh backed numbat, it's going to be more durable. I wonder if the shine will fade with sun or UV exposure. I dont like the horizontal front zip that doesn't go all the way across but I do like that the interior is a lighter color.
there's a small company call full tang tatical, they're kit bag is a modular chest pack/rig, and I find it superior to the hill people gear ones interms of making it fit my need
Another great review! I have a couple of chest rigs but I can't seem to get them dialed in. I prefer them more on the snug side but they tend to want to hang low. It's probably just me but any suggestions on how to keep them snug would be great since I'm usually wearing them while being active. Not necessarily running but hiking and moving. Thanks.
Metal/polymer thing that has other little metal things and springs inside, that’s the real purpose of chest rigs I thought, if you can fit some cashew bars and a flask, I mean, flashlight, well, that’s just a bonus
Hey Luke, hope you're well. I would love to see your thourghts on the Rook 65 Backpack from Osprey. It's a budget pack here in the UK and they've just done in it tactical Brown colour. I think you'll like it. Cheers
Not specific to this product but you must have a small warehouse of stuff that you reviewed. I can see you passing along good things that you do not need, but what about all the leaky tents and the like?
The shiney finish is a deal breaker, I’m not looking to be seen when I’m out and I can see the sun flashing off it from any and every angle as you move it around. Also, it doesn’t open up nearly as far as the Numbat.
Hi, i´m a Woman and like to wear a chestrig, especially when i´m hiking with a big backpack. And also on trips at night or with much of manual navigation. i´m using the Tasmanian tiger chestrig, its a smaller one with no suspension on the backside. when i have my backpack on with big shoulderstraps an a sternum strap it doesnt matters if there is another strap or thing in front of my boobs. The shiny material is not that bad in my opinion, i would like to wear ist and test it by my own. i could imagine that it will work great as an fishing chestrig, to store some items an a baitbox in it. Greeting from Germany!
For this, and the much lauded Peak Designs wash pouch (which I own), skipping a second zipper pull for an item of this price and size is inexcusable. In the case for Peak Designs, the similar Inateck tech pouch has two zipper pulls for half the price and good overall quality, so it is doable. The second zipper pull is a low-key must have that I definitely miss when I don't have it. That alone would be enough for me to pass on this. Every time you forget and need to juggle trekking poles to the other hand, you're going to be wishing you got a different rig.
Big fan of Osprey products in general. But that chest purse is a hard pass. Add in the nuclear melt backing that makes you sweat more and definitely no.
In my world the need to carry bear spray which is easily accessible is of paramount importance. With this and possibly other chest packs I don't see where I could mount it to be accessible easily. I think that is a miss. Having it on a backpack is plain undesirable, far too long to access easily as you need to take the whole pack off.
Hey Luke, maybe the shine will wear off as it ages and then you’ll start to like it more; and you could use it in colder temps since it doesn’t vent so well.
Looks like a nice front carry small pack. I think it’s too small to be any good for a good size day hike at all especially if you may have to deal with inclement weather as an accessory pack maybe but is a front carry PAK way too small and the price while the quality is goodis too expensive for that small pack
The majority of campers and hikers aren't in a recon platoon, so they probably don't care about obnoxious colors or materials. If you're in the backwoods, no one is going to be around to see it. Still going to sweat while hiking. Even watching TH-camrs stealth camp, they never get caught because they're still out of the way, or people see them and really don't care that a guy is camping next to a trail or McDonald's.
I really don’t like wearing stuff like that. It kinda reminds me of the Military stuff I was forced to wear in the Hot Desert, too uncomfortable and hard to maneuver around with specially in a fire fight.
People see you wearing something like that they think they know you have a gun. Some will run some will want to try you out. On the trail not so much but anywhere else it's a no go. I wore bib overalls all my life. People don't know what the hell you have in your pockets. Country bumpkin. Good vid
Luke love ❤️ with that nice shiny rig. You may need to get it touch, with your female side 😄😅😂😊 Fun aside, it is rather shiny. Nothing like the photo, as you said. Great storage room though. How shiny would the black be???? Take care Love too you both 🙏❤️🙏💕
HI LUKE 👋 AGREE , DON'T LIKE SHINY . THANK YOU FOR YOUR HONEST OPINION . OTHER THAN SOME OTHER THINGS .IT'S MADE REALLY WELL . BE SAFE ☺️ 🙏HAVE FUN ☺️ 🙏ENJOYED ❤☺️ 🙏GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS ON YOUR ADVENTURES ☺️ 🙏 THANK YOU ☺️ 🙏
This is literally a sling. Which is essentially a fanny pack. Honestly, whoever it was that made fanny packs fashionable by renaming them, 'slings' or 'crossbody' bags has to be insanely rich now.
Luke! Thanks for the review, sad life for the shiny material, thank you for being unbiased and just giving us the issues of products plain and simple. I would recommend you taking a look at the Osprey Archeon 45 Backpack tho. That pack doesn't have the shiny material and is an excellent durable pack. i own it myself and have been super happy with it for a good while. I think you will appreciate that pack too. Strength and Honor!
Shiney material in the woods whether hiking, fishing, hunting, is a neon sign in the woods. Also it could use weather flaps over every zipper for water prooffness, and all the other improvements you said. Big believer in gear being able to breath, rather than the foam on the back of the chest rig. They could build in some vertical stand offs on each side of the chest rig, so you would get some airflow in between the back of it an your chest, just a thought. Thx for the vid Luke
Let's be real here...these things ARE purses, just with a different strap. Men who carry it of course wouldn't want it to look feminine, hence the tactical designs and so on...but the truth is a shiny material is a good thing, high visibility for anyone you run across who may be out hunting or if you're lost. Nobody is taking these things into a combat situation requiring stealth, they take them on hikes and camping where reflective items aren't a bad thing. Personally I think that one is atrocious and would want the black one, but a shiny material wouldn't bug me.
Thanks for taking one for the team, Luke.
I absolutely love my Helikon Tex Numbat. Bought it after your review a few years ago cheers dude. Day 85 Chemo and still going strong- except in the mornings. 🤙
Keep going. Play mind games in the morning. You will win!
Stay strong bro you got this
The brain tumor has been trying to get me since 2010. I’m still here taking it day by day. Thanks for the comment.
Thanks for the comment mate. I have a couple of mantras that I recite on days like today, because I “hit” a wall today. One comes from the Shawshank Redemption. You know the one, “Get busy living, or get busy dying.”👍
I can't find one small enough to just fit my gun. Everyone of them are huge.
I've got the older version of this and it looks better, the front is all velcro so you can attach light stuff or you can put some patches on. It has mesh on the back, (so Osprey do know better) and the back harness is much better ventilated. This new version really does look like Osprey took several steps backward.
I second this. I have the velcro version and I’m quite pleased.
I wear a chestrig when mine exploring underground. This one could use molle on the front to mount a headlamp or articulating light to. The shiny is the biggest downside along with the breathability.
I totally agree with you here, this chest pack is far too shiny, but just as you stated in your commet , the pack is well made & durable
I’m a big fan of osprey. They carried me 1/2 way through my thru-hike in 1999. I reverted to my camp trails external pack halfway to my thruhike goal. It broke in New Hampshire but was strong for a decade.
When out in the woods always have my chest rig on, they are awesome, and a great place for conceal carry
Even out bush alone id be embarrassed to carry that.
Lmao. I dunno if it's... that bad. But... yeah.
It's not just a purse, it's a reflective rescue beacon.
Thanks for the really good honest review. I can see where it would be hot. And yes, it does look like a shiny purse. Another thing I would have liked to have seen with the Osprey is if the dual zippers for the main compartment would come all the way to the bottom corner on each side. That would allow easier access to a CCW.
Nice purse Luke, cough,cough.
Stay safe and God bless.
Pass on the chest purse. If you want the best for the right reasons …Hill People Gear.
That is the correct answer..I have several pieces of HPG, as they are made by First Spear for them it doesn't get any better
Nice review Luke, thank you. For me any pack, including chest packs, requires a trampoline back for summer use. I have an Osprey Syncro 20 daypack with a trampoline back which helps reduces sweat when the temps hit 90-110 in my area.
110?
I came into the video thinking it would be something cool to consider buying in the future. Now I am thinking an 80/90s retro fanny pack might work better. Thanks for the review Luke!

Some balls? Guns are for pu$$13$.

Check out the gun slinger GRAB bag. Main pocket uses a strong magnetic closure system. Very solid
I coveted their prior version for awhile. I get the feeling that they are going for a more urban, travel audience with the new one. The archeon series was more of an European market thus a different design language.
Seriously expected you to say this was like $300 since it is an Osprey product lol. Glad to see it's under $100
I feel like Osprey is reasonable compared to other companies.

What's the Caliber of your personal protection?.
Don't care about the more reflective surface, but lacking breathability would seal the deal for me.
Was that a Petrified Fish pocket knife?
Was thinking of getting one just to put water in to balance out my pack weight and put it on another strap.
Great review, keep em coming 👍
It does look like a purse. That was my first thought in the first few seconds of the video.

It needs a loop surface to add your own organization.
Thanks for sharing very informative
Too mush back padding. The harness seems to be for significantly heavier loads. “Shiney hinney.” Helikon is better layout
Hey Luke, maybe the shine will wear off as it ages and then you’ll start to like it more; and you could use it in colder temps since it doesn’t vent so well.
I bought a slinger made of the same material. The slinger is good but I feel it looks girly.
Looks like a nice front carry small pack. I think it’s too small to be any good for a good size day hike at all especially if you may have to deal with inclement weather as an accessory pack maybe but is a front carry PAK way too small and the price while the quality is goodis too expensive for that small pack
Great review. The material looks like a purse vinyl and that would be hot.
Thank you for saving me the disappointment of buying a $400+ shiny pack system
It looks like something a tourist would buy at the airport
The majority of campers and hikers aren't in a recon platoon, so they probably don't care about obnoxious colors or materials. If you're in the backwoods, no one is going to be around to see it. Still going to sweat while hiking. Even watching TH-camrs stealth camp, they never get caught because they're still out of the way, or people see them and really don't care that a guy is camping next to a trail or McDonald's.
Luke - you are the man! keep up the awesome work :-) best regards from Denmark ;-)
Go Luke. Nice gear. S&H
It's funny you said it looked like a purse cause that was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw it.
I have seen purses with a similar look, like plain and black and definitely not shiny
Good vid
Hill People Gear. 👌🏻
My chest rig looks much different. It holds different things. Things that protect. Things that......
Luke love ❤️ with that nice shiny rig. You may need to get it touch, with your female side 😄😅😂😊
Fun aside, it is rather shiny. Nothing like the photo, as you said.
Great storage room though. How shiny would the black be????
Take care Love too you both 🙏❤️🙏💕
thanks!!
EVA foam against the skin? Phew, that's disappointing. I am pretty sure sweat will cause it to crumble after a pretty short time.
HI LUKE 👋
AGREE , DON'T LIKE SHINY . THANK YOU FOR YOUR HONEST OPINION . OTHER THAN SOME OTHER THINGS .IT'S MADE REALLY WELL . BE SAFE ☺️ 🙏HAVE FUN ☺️ 🙏ENJOYED ❤☺️ 🙏GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS ON YOUR ADVENTURES ☺️ 🙏 THANK YOU ☺️ 🙏
Nothing like a man using a man bag. Makes everything better 😌 love your reviews!!
I think it looks great 👍
Shiney material in the woods whether hiking, fishing, hunting, is a neon sign in the woods.
Looks more like a camping Dopp Kit for dad. I don’t like the shiney aspect of it. 😊
