      Truth be told, any armored vehicle doesn't have to retire at all. As long as it's still moving, your army would always be able to use it. The only reason why armies retire older vehicles, is so that they don't get shamed. The world oldest tank was literally used up until recently in Afghanistan the FT17.
      M60 is a great tank. Doesn't have to retire... ever.

    From a geopolitical standpoint, upgrading M60s makes sense for Iran rather than wasting money on a handful of T-90S-spec tanks (Karrar). The most likely ground war for the Iranian Army is most likely an intervention in Syria, Iraq or Afghanistan, to deal with an insurgency, install a friendly regime or maybe fight a relatively minor skirmish with a peer army. These tanks (ideally) would never be facing Turkish Altays or Israeli Merkhavas, or even Saudi Abrams MBTs. Those wars would be fought by the rocket force, like the scud-duels during the Iran-Iraq war. Proxies with ATGMs, drones and artillery rockets fight Israel for Iran, so these tanks are 'good enough' for the Iranians. Anyhow, the bigger priority for Iran is its Missile/Drone arsenal, nuclear program or even air defence capabilities, rather than relative quality of its fairly large ground forces.

    • @thedesignerblacksmith5953
      @thedesignerblacksmith5953 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      Any country should. And in fact, even in US, the M109 is so old and some variants in service is outdated to those from other countries like the K9, they still use it and upgrade it.
      That's why there is nothing bad about this, especially when the price is acceptable. If anything, I just think the Shtora-1 won't work anymore

    The metal shroud is there for thermal management. A tank main gun is a hollow tube that's only supported at one end. As a result, sunlight will heat the part of the gun tube exposed to direct sunlight to heat up and expand slightly. This will cause a slight bend that can have a significant effect on accuracy. Keeping direct sunlight for hitting the gun tube beans that the tube will remain at a uniform temperature and no thermal bending will occur.
    Generally, this is achieved using fiberglass or sheet-metal tubes that fit over the gun tube. I suspect that the Iranians tried to use those sheet-metal designs to both do this and make the tank look more modern. However, the shrouds do not appear to be well connected to the barrel and repeated firing will likely damage them fairly quickly.

    • @unclejohnbulleit2671

    • @stevidente
      @stevidente 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Huh? Sunlight is not a factor. The heat generated by firing the gun is greatly in excess of any thermal effect from sunlight. Steel thermal expansion is only 0.1mm per meter per degree C.

    • @colincampbell767
      @colincampbell767 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@stevidente 'Thermal bending' is a factor. And it isn't the heat from firing that causes the issue. It's when the side facing the sun gets hotter than the side that shaded.
      Remember that a tank main gun is a tube that's only supported at one end. And that thermal expansion of metal is a thing.
      Oh and have you done the math as to exactly how much a 5C difference in temperature (and it is generally much higher) will change the direction the muzzle is pointing? And the effect this will have on accuracy at 2000 meters?
      And you of course are aware that you have just demonstrated that you have no experience on tanks.

      @@colincampbell767 You are being ridiculous. The shield is nothing more then propaganda. It is an upgrade designed to gain publicity points for the Iranian army. Heat from the sun should not have any impact on the gun. Tank guns are not made from an ordinary steel like your average knife. And if the sun is an issue, then just wrap a camouflage net around the gun. Won't cost you anything extra, won't needlessly weigh down the tank and most important it has the same effect.

    0:35 I know of a reason for the gun shield and it comes from WWII.
    During combat, the German panthers would get very hot barrels and when it would rain the metal at the top of the barrel would cool very quickly compared to the bottom which would warp the gun upwards slightly and throw it off zero. I dont know why I only heard it from a German report.
    Maybe its because their guns were so much longer than the allies (length equal 70 calibers of the gun) and that made them more susceptible to the light bending. This was solved post war by placing a shroud over the gun.

      An APS system might help it against missiles, but it won't do anything against KE projectiles. So in the end, you have an M60A3 hull with a little bit of ERA that will get penetrated by essentially every full caliber APFSDS, including outdated rounds like 3BM15 or DM23. The turret might do a bit better with the added composite, but I still doubt it'll be very effective against modern or semi-modern darts, like 3BM46, DM53 or M829A2. It's internal crew protection also isn't great, as combat losses have shown much higher crew casualties per penetrating hit for Sabras than the Leopard 2A4s Turkey also uses.
      And while it has a decent gun, it's still an M60, so mobillity isn't exactly great. So in the end, while the Sabra upgrade may allow it to go toe to toe with upgraded T72As, an M60 is never going to stand up to a Leo2, M1A2 or T80BVM.

    Iran has manufactured its own state-of-the-art Karar main battle tank in large quantities. Given its advanced and as you mentioned costly nature , Iran prefers to reserve these tanks for conflicts with sophisticated adversaries like the US. Instead, it upgrades its older T-72 and M60 tanks for use against neighboring countries and proxies/terrorists that lack advanced weaponry. And is not designed for use against a serious adversary.
    This is a pretty smart strategy, especially when you look at Gaza war and how Israel is losing its most advanced tank by Hamas snick behind it and stick an explosive with magnet on its weakest part of body and get destroyed
    i bet they had an Iranian upgraded T72 and M60 tanks equipped with 360-degree awareness with Iranian auto targeting machine guns and advanced targeting systems for the tank itself, instead of using their most advanced, tank that intended for fighting with Iran not Hamas.
    These advanced tanks are the only ones with advanced targeting that they need, but they also have many expensive technologies to counter electronic warfare and other costly equipment, which are intended for advanced adversaries and are useless against Hamas.
    Iran strategy preserves the Karar tanks while repurposing older models that would otherwise be retired and scrapped, thereby benefiting the country.

    Though thinking about it, it could have some practical use in passive heat dissipation, though probably not enough to be noticeable.

    I worked a few years in Iran military manufacturing industry and let me tell you this.
    always assume the worst about the things that come out of the factory line.
    they barely spend any money on research and people in charge are selected based on their believes and loyalty to government and not based on talent.
    once I talked to a commander who was willing to bet his life that Russian tanks are using hardkill APTS and its the best thing in the world because he had seen a video and his ears were closed to any fact that you were presenting.
    also 90% of things you see Iran builds are for the sake of national audience who don't have access to true information.
    so when this commander (in video) says that this tank is one of the best in the world and news channels air it , most Iranian will believe it.
    they most likely make the modification to a few of the tanks to show on TV and then leave the project.
    Iran spends shyt ton of money on Militants groups on proxy wars and not that many on its actual army.
    love you videos and keep up the good work.

      So the gun sleeves are supposed to break up the tank's thermal signature to make them harder to identify at range. But like the KF51, and every other prototype that has them, they won't end up in the production version because that technique doesn't work. Tank designers have been toying with the concept for about 20 years, and in 20 years they're always excluded from the production model.

  • @EnigmaHood

    It's possible the dazzlers are not the same as the dazzlers on the old T90 tanks, and are able to defeat modern ATGMs. If not, it's possible that the inclusion is to defeat older ATGMs fired from militia groups they are fighting against in the region. I don't think this tank upgrade is meant to be a pose any meaningful threat to Israel or the US, they invested heavily into drones, and ballistic missiles for that purpose. Russia's support of Iran also strengthened their air defenses with the S-400 SAM systems and Murmansk jammer systems.
    Iran is very far from Israel, so they wouldn't have any practical means to stage a ground invasion with tanks into Israel, so their tanks are likely intended to fight locally against militias, where these upgrades are good enough for that purpose.

  • @ConstantineJoseph
    @ConstantineJoseph 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Dazzlers will still work with ATGMs that do not have top down attack functionality. So it may fit into a more asymmetrical warfare doctrine of going up against less well equipped forces. The top down attack systems like the SPIKE, Javelin, HJ-12, Kornet-M will destroy any MBT on the planet as the top attack is the weak spot of every tank

  • @WormholeJim
    @WormholeJim 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The extended shielding of the barrel or parts of it is meant as a radar-frustrating measure to both distort radar signature to conceal the tank's identity in the same way camouflage patterns are meant to disrupt the outline of a structure or vehicle to make it harder to recognize and identify, and to confuse ordnance using radar homing. It was originally explored by the IDF in the Merkava design but was dropped in later versions due to it having no tangible effect.

    • @mehrdad4784
      @mehrdad4784 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      There are only one or two munitions which use radar for homing on a ground target such as tank, on the surface radar stealth does not make sense, that's why US never made the Comanche helicopter.

    • @WormholeJim
      @WormholeJim 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mehrdad4784 Right. And as the Israelis also found out. I notice the Russian army has a similar feature on some of their (officially presented) T-14 variants. It's more of a rhombe-shaped barrel than a sleave covering a rounded barrel. Probably that's where the Iranians got the idea for their shield-extended barrel shroud.
