When I want to make art and don't have the energy or cope to tackle all the elements I'd want for a "real" original, I do warm-up style drills. I usually pick a bright color to do them in, so I don't feel bored. Then it's just loops and lines and squiggles for an hour. I stop thinking about what I'm making and turn off the need for choices altogether. Instead, I focus on my breathing and how to keep my breath natural while I execute the most basic brushstrokes with as much precision as I can. Focusing on both at the same time is all consuming and the rest of the world goes away. After that, the next time I sit down to art, I'm ready.

So agree with this. I made a video applying paint on top of each other with intention. My husband - a Muggle in the true Harry Potter sense of the word- doesnt get it. Why would an artist apply paint for the sake of it?! People dont realize what a joy it is just to express yourself with a brush using paint. We are lucky!

Exactly my creative process as taught by a professor in Creativity at Central St Martins London. I paint how I feel by abstracting images in my mind. I copied a lot of the masters to start over 5 years and painting from the learning of the craft. Kandinsky, Krasner, Cubist, New York school, Latin American art, then in the end I don’t copy anything as then it has been done before.

Seeing you give yourself permission to copy ethically has inspired me. The pressure I feel to be original can be debilitating at times, so I'm looking forward to leaning trying these tips. Thank you!

Originality in Art is not a myth because the creative process is a mindset that ask for the individual to be themselves or to imagine something bigger than themselves.
Now, this concept of Originality should not be confused with being influenced or with someone copying or shoplifting someone else's ideas or work.
Yet back to my point. Originality is a real concept because we as thinkers, creators & individuals can build as well as understand when we experience something that explains what we can do as well as perceive from others, because Originality is not just a basis of reality where it is just about our own Originality, it is also about recognizing what is Original in other people.

Copying master works in a different medium from the original version is more difficult than it looks. You have conveyed the pathos of the original faithfully. The quality of brush strokes and sense of light are both excellent. The new cropping is also more compact than the original. Edgar would be proud.

I started painting again. The last time I did was in high school and it’s been 7 years since that. Began painting as soon as I started working and studying this year, one thing I can say is that how therapeutic it can be. Although I place a lot of pressures on myself to be “original” or to make picturesque worthy painting despite knowing that I’m not well-equipped for that due to how long I had left this side of my passion. I found your vids to be inspiring and yeps definitely feel that replicating is probably best to keep myself motivated especially with the commitments I have at the moment. I’d like to just re-awaken my childhood passion and want it to be something that I grow to love again :)

  • @jetgoldranger
    @jetgoldranger 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Waaay back in the day, one of my favorite art teachers told me "Imitation is a vital part of an artists development." That always made sense. I mean, the first step in learning just about anything is finding someone who knows what their doing, and watching them do it (one reason I love your channel). Of course, in addition to the reasons you site, and of course sharpening technical skills, when I do a master study (which I don't do near enough) I like to try and get into the head of the artist. "WHY did Degas use shadow in that way, what was da Vinci thinking when he did the Mona Lisa?" To me at least, that just gives a whole new dimension to the old masters that the casual viewer just doesn't get to see.
BTW: Give Mango a good scratch behind the ears for me, he's adorable! Great Video! 👏👏👏👏

    • @AshleighKing
      @AshleighKing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I love your idea of trying to figure out the master artist’s thought process too! I’m sure that adds whole new layer of learning and critical thinking skills to the practice. Mango says hi! 😊have a great week!

"Absinthe Drinkers" has always been one of my favorite master works, and your copy look great!! I think I read somewhere that the buzz from drinking even a little absinth is kind of like a zombie trance, and her blank expression was meant to reflect that. Your take, that she's lonely and despondent, is interesting too, and you've captured that feeling beautifully in her face and her surroundings.

So happy to have found your channel. I'm currently struggling to get back into painting. Watching this episode really helped me realize I'm the only one. Such a great idea to look to other art for inspiration. I've been putting a lot of pressure on myself, relying to create from memory. Last week, I just played with my watercolors, but couldn't create anything. Now, watching this, I feel more confident to try again. I have to let go of the pressure and just enjoy making art again. Thank you so for sharing this message with all of us. It has really encouraged me to try again. P.S. Love your work space. Right now I'm trying to get my creative space a more inviting feel. Also, the production of your videos are well done.

Beautiful work!! I love the video, it’s so relaxing. When I can’t think of what to paint or draw I usually copy flower paintings. Either from Pinterest or I follow videos. I have a sketchbook dedicated for times like this when I just don’t want to think of colors or how to mix them or what to draw. And sometimes I just do swatching of the colors I have. Usually I write from where I copied the drawing ( Pinterest, a book I have , instagram with the name of artist, and you tube).

I sketched in the museum (intimidating!!!), and then painted at home. I definitely want to try that some more. I noticed a lot about the paintings that I hadn't noticed before.

I've also found copying with your left hand if you are right handed.. or copying without looking at your drawing, but only the original source will free your imagination.
In fact using your utensils in a creative way (like taping charcoal to your finger, or taping a brush on a long stick) will not only free you from techniques, but challenge what technical ability actually is... Thanks for the video.

I like to note the original source for my own recollection and knowledge and because years later I wonder did I do this sketch as my own original in an art class or did I copy a print or did I follow an online tutorial. If I use a print I often include a photocopy in the facing page of my sketchbook or if it’s from a step by step book or online tutorial I make a note in the corner (like done from so and so’s tutorial; or exercise using Monet’s [title]). Also important to acknowledge photographs I didn’t take (“based on photo by Jane Smith”) that way if I want to use it or share the art later I know it’s ok if it was from my own photograph or not ok (or need to ask permission) if someone else’s photo.

Good topic! Oh my…I had a post a few months ago on IG of artwork I did that was a copy of a very respected, but not exactly famous, turn of the century artist, Thomas Waterman Wood. I did a photo showing both works right next to each other. Of course, his work was obvious. His paintings are in some top museums in the U.S. He was mostly known for his portraits, but also did beautiful naturalist and botanical works. The one I copied was his Blue Cheeked Barbet bird. I printed out a copy and then traced it onto wc paper. I could have attempted to draw the outlines myself, but it would have taken so long just to get that done…so much erasing and stating over, and I’d just be frustrated. I never finished it and want to get back to it to fill in lots more detailing. But what I did complete looks pretty good, if I do say so myself.👍 And it was a great learning experience for me. As long as you’re using art that is in the public domain or that you have permission to copy or don’t need permission, like what you may find on Unsplash, you can copy it. But proper credit should always be given no matter, especially if you’re straight-up copying. If you’re doing it “in the style of” and more as an inspirational source and what you’re using as a resource original is not recognizable as such, then I don’t think attribution is necessary. As an art teacher once said to our class about using photos or photos of art, “just make it yours.”

Hello Ashleigh, I have been watching your videos for some time and enjoy watching you paint and your thought process. After many many years I decided to do something for myself and picked up the paintbrush and I have been learning how to use certain mediums. I haven't studied art, I just do it for myself, in a way to prove my self-worth. I have watched many on youtube striving for excellence and to understand the masters etc. However, I feel so many are so fixated on what's already been achieved rather than what can be achieved. Aren't we all the puppeteers of our work? As Jetgoldranger stated below what were these Masters thinking at the time? Why did they put the shadow there? Perhaps they also "cropped" or used their artistic license to make the work interesting? We will never know. The Masters created techniques - not just followed others. It's good to know the past, however, there is also a future to be found.
It's an interesting topic for sure, though I decided not to work towards excellence, instead expressing myself the way I want regardless if the techniques are right or wrong.
Isn't that want art is? Self-expression? If someone can splash paint on a canvas or paint in a similar style to a 5-year-old and sell it for $1 million (which I still can't get my head around it), I shouldn't feel my work isn't good enough as I haven't followed "rules 1 to 20".
Who knows, perhaps someone in the future will recognize some genius in my work without me even realizing it at the time.
Perhaps being a hobbyist and not academically studied my beliefs are questionable. When I paint, I want it to be a reflection of me, not because some fancy pants man back in the 14th century said it needs to be done this way.
Have "we" complicated things to the point we are missing the point, or do we crave the structure and the ideals to feel overwhelmed and to constantly question ourselves? The mind boggles.
Also, just a suggestion. Ever considered painting a self-portrait and capturing yourself at that moment? A moment in time where emotion, being happy or sad or perhaps holding something that has significant meaning to you. You capture moods amazingly, such as the lady in your painting. Now that would be amazing to see.
Perhaps an A0-A2 size. Why paint small when you can paint big? 🤣 You could also do it as a Part 1, Part 2 Part 3 video. Thank you for all your hard work.

These are all very interesting points! I agree there is much to be learned from old masters, but also a lot to be discovered and appreciated in our own explorations. I think there’s definitely room for both of these outlooks in our art creation.
For example, in order to break the rules and create something “new/exciting” we have to first learn what the rules of art are. So we’re breaking them with reason in a way that can be appreciated. But that’s just my opinion haha.
I appreciate you continuing this discussion! It is fun to think about 😊

@@AshleighKing I agree with you that you need to learn the basics in order to progress. I did just that with watercolour painting. Never used the medium before, You have a style that takes the old, throws in the new, and splashes coffee all over it (I'm a coffee lover) to give it life. Someone like myself can see how you break down the process whereas I like to challenge the rules and try something different. Ok, I have the perfect example.
I was trying to do a project the other day and wanted to paint a bunch of feathers overlapping each other. I tried it one way and it looked flat and unrealistic. Tried it again, and it was a slight improvement. So then I decided why not try something different.
(please don't send hate mail to me, those who might get offended 🤣)
This was using watercolours by the way. And yes I know how to use them, though I wanted to try something different.
So, I did an underpainting of grey shades as a first layer and then applied the colour above it as you would do with acrylics. And I tell you, I was shocked at the results. I got instant values. I was so proud of myself for trying this and thought "ok Mr fancy pants of the 14th century I just took your theory and threw it out the window."
So instead of doing the shadows above the layers, I did them first to see what would happen. 🤣

@@NikkiA.Art. haha that’s a great example!! I think that experimentation is the best part of creating; trying different things until we find was works for us or make us the most excited it! I definitely do that, but should probably try to experiment more often. 😊

Hi! I just found your channel. It’s beautiful. I have a genuine question, as an aspiring TH-camr, is it difficult to get those walking shots of you and your friends on your hike? I would imagine you have to set up the camera, walk by, then go back and get the camera. Are your friends okay with it? I’m struggling with filming around people. I get embarrassed lol. Thanks for any tips!

    Hello Ash
Im a newbi I just came across your video. I wanted to ask you do you make prints of your art? I wasnt really clear what you meant. Love your pup. This may sound silly but did you learn from someone who was also left handed? I tend to find left handed artist to what kind of strokes positions cause at times. It makes it confusing watching a right hander. She is very incredible love your art style too

Hi! Thank you 😊 I do make print that are available on my website!
I didn’t learn from a left handed artist, but I understand what you mean! We have to find ways to hold the brush/pencil differently so we don’t smudge our work haha.
