I'd say watch them all in order but if you don't want to do that then I probaly suggest other classic stories such as Pyramids of Mars, The Talons of Weng-Chiang, the E-space Trilogy, Planet of the Spiders, The Three Doctors and The Five Doctors.

If you like sci-fi, try Blake's 7 and Survivors, both created by Terry Nation, the creator of the Daleks.
As for favorite Doctor Who episodes - Tennant's S02E13-14 and S4E13-14. Both crush your heart.

When it was a child, Tom Baker (4th Doctor with the cool scarf!) was briefly married to Lalla Ward (Romana II in the episode you chose 'City of Death'), and they lived for a time where I grew up in Oxfordshire. My grandfather ran the town's butcher's shop, and Tom was a customer. The shop was old with a low doorway, and Tom is tall! But the main thing was he was as delightfully bonkers in real life as he was as The Doctor!

An aspect that I really liked about the Hartnell story that you skipped over was the romance he found himself in. He started off as such a grump but this story really started to soften him and I must admit to being touched when he goes back to take the ring.

The low budget that you talk about was particularly true of Doctor Who because it was a family show biased towards children. That also informed the structure of the early show, stories would alternate between historical/educational and futuristic/philosophical.

You’re probably aware but the real life son of the actor who played Ian (companion to the first Doctor), is the actor who played Dean Thomas in the Harry Potter films and Patrick Troughton’s Grandson plays Harry’s cousin Dudley.
Weirdly, Tom Baker (the Fourth Doctor) actually began to train as a Monk before becoming an actor.
Of course it’s well documented that Peter Davidson is the Father in Law of the Tenth Doctor David Tennant, who met his wife when she played the Doctor’s daughter in the episode of the same name.

A weird British show that I love is Mulberry. A sweet one is called As Time Goes By. A wild wacky fun one is called Are you Being Served. It’s also one that has jokes of it’s time, that not everyone can handle. Another tv show that is funny is called Waiting For God. A British Soap Opera I enjoy still is Coronation Street. Tom Baker was my Doctor as a child. Still my favourite.

Please consider watching the original "Upstairs, Downstairs", if you haven't already. Its 68 episodes cover a great time period (1903 to 1930), through the lives of the downstair servants and the upstair nobles in the Belgravia part of London. I love the series and rewatch it nearly every year. Let me know, if you need help finding/acquiring the full series...

I always wonder why the old episodes (70s) looked different from indoor to outdoor scenes but then someone made a video about that and explained it was due to using studio cameras inside and smaller ones outdoors which makes sense with the bulky 70s tech, apparently it was also on video tape for outdoors

Recently I've been listening to his Radio 4 series "Strangers on a Train". It's just Alexei Sayle chatting to random passengers on regular train services and finding out some interesting life stories in the process. A very simple show format but ends up being rather endearing.
I actually really like the DJ character in Revelation. A manic, surreal persona which masks a shy, lonely man stuck doing a job he knows is pointless and no one cares about. I think Alexei plays it just right. Unfortunately I think the character gets a lot of hate because a lot of people just can't get past the crazy DJ patter when we're first introduced to him.

The original Doctor played by William Hartnell was an amazing dotty, stern, aloof and unpredictable eccentric. Love him. The Doctor was supposed to be more of an anti-hero because they didn’t want to pin him down but to make him a strange mysterious figure and he is. Classic Who Doctors are the best because they don’t act too human. Classic Who is filmed like a drama play or serial and it enables the writers to focus on good intelligent plots rather than superficial special effects. It’s all about mood building and character rather than sound and fury which sadly much of modern Who is. Necessity is the mother of invention. Tom Baker is such an eccentric and has so much presence. He’s amazing. The 1st & 4th Doctors are my favourites if I was forced to choose two. The TV Movie had its plus points but I hated the Doctor kissing his companion. Totally out of character for the Doctor and it’s never really recovered since then, although Peter Capaldi tried his damn best to bring back the more stern aloof vibe to some extent. Notice you never see his Doctor kissing anyone. I hated Tennant, too OTT for me. I prefer Christopher Eccleston and definitely Peter Capaldi. The 15th Doctor doesn’t feel like the Doctor at all because he’s breaking down crying all the time. Sutekh clinging to the Tardis makes no sense because the Tardis was destroyed in the past like in Frontios. Russell T Davis has become a lazy writer. For me Disney Who feels very superficial. Let’s face it Peter Capaldi is the best actor we’ve had in New Who. You should check out Britains other Classic TV shows such as THE PRISONER 1967 and BLAKE’S 7 1978. Interesting reviews. 👍

      3) The Time Warrior
      4) The Robots of Death, The Horror of Fang Rock, and Genesis of the Daleks
      5) Earthshock and The Visitation
We need The Curse of Peladon and Frontier in Space for the 3rd Doctor in the mix, and for the 6th I'd do The Mysterious Planet. Other than that (and the 7th Doctor, who I don't much care about), I'd say they're pretty well represented.

I'm a child of the McCoy era and I adore seasons 25 and 26. They show how short sighted it was to cancel the show because they're choc full of bangers (Remembrance of the Daleks, Happiness Patrol, Greatest Show in the Galaxy, Ghost Light, Fenric and Survival).
To me, there's a lot to love in all the different eras,... Well, sadly, maybe a little less so in the Chibnal era - though I quite like Flux,... Untill the final episode where they utterly Bork the resolution.
The variety and ethics of the show: that you can use intelligence and empathy to overcome monsters, rather than guns - that's what keeps me coming back.

"It isn't the day they die that is the problem. You've got something to do on that day. It is all the days they stay dead."
THAT is what makes that episode so strong. Taking the long way round is just bullheaded intransigence. But that scene was the whole of the sorrow of The Doctor. So is his monologue in "The Zygon Inversion". Each Doctor since the Time War had to continue living with what he'd done. The tragedies HE CAUSED. Never again.

  • @hoarsebard
    @hoarsebard 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

The sixth doctor was so contentious he nearly killed the show, and arguably did, even if it didn't end until after the seventh doctor had his go. The arguing with Peri and his pompous, slightly violent personality were just not what people wanted to see. Personally, my favorite moment from him overall is when he's on trial on Gallifrey for time crimes, and he thinks the villain just killed Peri. He stands up in shock, looking genuinely very upset and he just says "You killed Peri..." Before he explodes in anger, dressing down the entirety of timelord society, and when he hears that Peri can still be saved, he rushes out of the courtroom to go and do it. It just shows to me what the heart of the sixth doctor is, he's explosive, eccentric, and is more about action than planning. He has gotten some of the most expanded universe content of any of the doctors, and all of it is way better than his TV episodes, give his audio plays a go, they're great fun.

I did not like Colin Baker's tenure but mostly because of his awful companion. Loved Sylvester McCoy and yeah, Ace was Ace.
I do wish Sean Pertwee would be a Doctor at some point - just for a joke about his new face being 'familiar'. But actually i think he would make a great Doctor. Can't imagine anyone ever actually wanting to 'follow' a parent into a role like this, so it'll probably never happen but it's a shame.

Fun video! I loved hearing your opinions on each Doc!
My favorite Ten story is probably "Midnight"
If I may suggest some other Sixth Dr. stories (because no one else will you cowards XD)
    My (onscreen) favorites are probably:
    - "Vengeance on Varos" for the concepts more than the doctor's specific role in it. He actually has some good (none argue-y) moments with Peri which is much appreciated haha
"Terror of the Vervoids" because The Doctor and Mel are adorable and are both at top form! Minus the carrot juice, lol
This is the kindest his dr has been (barring audiodramas of course). The alien is... eh, and the trial bits kinda drag, but I love watching them anyway because I love how dramatic six is. ❤️ 💙
And "The two Doctors" because... I freaking love both 2 and 6 (and Jamie!) so put them in the same episode and you have gold! (Decent episode, great doctors!)
But of course he is at his best writing wise in a lot of the audios, which is unfair :P

My dad (Having grown up on the show in the 70s) stuck me and my brother in a room and put on the 20th Anniversary Special. Since then growing up I basically watched Classic Who and Modern Who simultainiously, watching a new Classic every time we got a new DVD and then obviously the new episodes as they aired on Saturday evenings.
I actually still haven't watched it all, but with with the BBC finally adding all of Classic to Iplayer and started watching reconstructions with The Celestial Toymaker in preperation for The Giggle it's never been more availble to me to fill my gaps.
I currently have 83/883 episodes left to watch which comprises about 20/311 stories.

Poor Peter Davison: as you pointed out, following Tom Baker was a losing proposition and it probably would have been for anyone. Davison gets a lot of flack, but I liked him and his darker stories, featuring a Doctor who was less sure, less certain. I think it was a correct pivot away from the more flamboyant and assertive, charismatic Baker. One day, I hope, Davison will get the credit for the courage it took to step into place after the departure of such a long-running and strong predecessor. Similarly, Colin Baker got flack for his Doctor, but behind the scenes turmoil concerning budget and hostile studio backing fed into a lot of the difficulties in developing Colin Baker's character. I was guilty of disliking him unfairly, but I feel differently now, and sympathetic toward what Colin Baker had to endure.

Good review. I have been a fan for 40+ years. “The Daemons” is the peak Third Doctor episode, when he is fully mature with his UNIT family. “The Day of the Doctor” is best for the War Doctor. “Human Nature/The Family of Blood” is a Seventh Doctor story, but was adapted for the Tenth Doctor by showrunner RTD. I would have picked “The Fires of Pompeii” or “School Reunion” for the Tenth Doctor. The best Eleventh Doctor episode is “The Eleventh Hour.” The Twelfth Doctor’s first two seasons are quite bad and uncharacteristic of the Doctor, so I would recommend “Twice Upon A Time” from his third season. “The Power of the Doctor” is one of the only Thirteenth Doctor episodes I can enjoy, because the writing was so bad. “The Star Beast” is the best of the Fourteenth Doctor. “Dot and Bubble” was the best of the Fifteenth Doctor so far, but I hope the writing improves for season two.

The Caves of Androzani is one of the most highly praised Doctor Who stories, and I respect that a lot is going on in it, but something about the execution stops me from absolutely loving it. It doesn't help that I find the Phantom of the Opera vibes to be pretty cheesy. As far as Davison's portrayal of the Doctor goes, he's a bit more down-to-earth and more human than Tom Baker's Doctor, and the show tends to be a bit less lighthearted in tone. I do think that Davison suffered from following Tom Baker's long and excellent reign (though the last couple of seasons of Tom Baker's era were noticeably weaker than his earlier stuff, in my opinion). Earth Shock is probably my favorite 5th Doctor story, though it's a relatively heavy one too. The Visitation is a good one that's a bit more lighthearted at times.

A fascinating runthrough.....a great plan to watch one highly rated episode from each Doctor- but one of the strengths of the series is that each episode has its own world set up and a different type of story- so for each Doctor you only get one flavour of a multiflavoured Doctor. Assuming you don't have time to watch the entire thing- I would go and sample another couple of random episodes for each Doctor.
Heaven Sent is a very highly thought of episode- but I hated it! I hated the premise of him being trapped for centuries - it's too much!....It really didn't work for me. But all Doctor Who fans have bits they love and bits they hate.
What else to watch? I would say Detectorists is a lovely, well written gentle comedy drama. Also, if you haven't seen it, the UK version of Ghosts, which is the same premise as the US Ghosts, but very different. (It's the original, and the US series has changed and built on the original for a US audience- rather like the US Office did.) UK Ghosts is very British.

Strange that for the 15th doctor, you only watched the first part of a two part story. The second part is not highly regarded by most fans so some would say you're not missing much but it seems a bit strange to do that considering the multi parters you did before. There is no obvious choice of a representative good story from this first season though, which isn't helped by the episode count now down to 8. I'd also question some of the choices of stories in general but that's just fan nit-picking.
As for shows to watch, Fawlty Towers often tops polls of best uk tv ever and for a reason; It's also short at 12 episodes. I'd also recommend Father Ted as another great comedy. Also his relationship with Ruby had to be more told than shown because of this as well. Overall I enjoy him as a Doctor and hope they can build on him in the Christmas episode / 2nd season. Interesting take on all the doctors. We’ve been trying to watch all the series from the beginning but got a bit bogged down with the slowness of some of the earliest episodes. Your idea of watching one of each is one we will follow I think. As to other British series, you mentioned Detectorists : this is very English, very slow and very beautiful. It shows our countryside - and our Englishness so well. Another series by Mackenzie Crook is Wurzel Gummidge. The original was played by the 3rd Doctor Who and was a much loved feature of many people’s childhood. The new version has a feel of Detectorists as Crook is very interested in the environment and country lore. It makes me think of the mythology of Lord of the Rings - times lost. Ghosts is another to watch; I know you have your own version now but the original is so British - would be interesting for you both to compare the two

Hello Cara and Jeremy. I had to be a little late to this one, having had other stuff to do lately, but I reckon I can pretend I had to travel in time to it.
My favourite Doctor was Tom Baker. I thought the Eccleston Doctor was fantastic, especially as he played it as a northerner. I was annoyed when he left and unlike most was only happy again when the Doctor regenerated and had Amy Pond as companion. Just when I thought this Doctor and Clara were going to be the best ever, he regenerated again and I could not stand the new Doctor, though no problem with Capaldi. I also had no problem with a female version in theory, with potentially great companions, but the writing was obviously letting the show and the Yorkshire Doctor down. I tried watching the latest Doctor, but I am either too old or it has gone off to a parallel universe where some other people might like it. The new assistant already quit, seeing the future?
Your review was good in this universe though.
You could review out the spin off series?

I’ll avoid the typical Dr Who fan critique of some era of the show and recommend a British show nobody has mentioned: The Prisoner (1967). 17 episodes of weirdness created by and starring Patrick McGoohan as an ex spy who has been kidnapped and trapped in an idyllic Village in order for someone to obtain “information” from him. It’s highly paranoid in a Cold War way, full of classic 1960s design, high tech (for the time) gadgetry, and it has an finale that still infuriates people to this day. Worth a watch!

There's so many great episodes. I recommend The Invasion and the War Games from the 2nd doctor. They're long but really worth it.
I recommend the green death, which is a 3rd doctor story. I recommend Pyramids of mars, brain of morbius, robots of death and warriors gate from 4th doctor. Caves of androzani is amazing in my opinion - other great 5th doctor stories are Kinda, Earthshock and I actually really like the Black Guardian trilogy (Mawdryn undead, terminus and enlightenment). Five Doctors is definitely worth a watch. Vengeance on Varos is another decent Colin Baker episode. And for the 7th doctor I highly recommend Remembrance of the daleks, Happiness Patrol and Ghost Light.

William Hartnell was not the first choice of the producers but was available at the time. He had a reputation for being difficult to work with hence the short scenes and not appearing to be the main character. Those early episodes had me watching clutching a cushion to hide behind.
The original theme tune was the first use of electronically produced music made by the BBC Radiophonic Studio.

Dr Who started in the year I was born, but the first Doctor I remember watching was the Earthbound Jon Pertwee. However, the Doctor that was MY Doctor was Tom Baker. Peter Davison kind of put me off the series, partly because he played it in exactly the same style as his Tristan character from All Creatures Great an Small. Colin Baker almost won me back, but Sylvester McCoy lost me entirely. It wasn't until Christopher Eccleston rebooted the character that I became interested again, but Peter Capaldi lost me again and I haven't come back.

Interesting. I usually see Capaldi praised, but I couldn't get into his Doctor or his era, and dropped the show, before giving the show another try with Jodie Whittaker, then dropping out again after another couple of seasons/series. I also dropped the classic show during the McCoy era, and only much later went back and watched everything I'd missed. McCoy is my least favorite Doctor. I kind of like Peter Davison's Doctor though. That's where you and I differ (not that the show was the strongest then, mind you).

It's really interesting to heard peoples opinions on the Doctors. Especially with our limited experience with the classic ones.

Not a massive fan but did enjoy a lot of Tennant's era. Best episode that has stayed with me is 'Blink' - the introduction of The Weeping Angels. Excellent creations.
