- Permaculture water systems are designed to capture, store, and distribute water efficiently, ensuring sustainable use and minimizing waste. Below is a list of 10 common permaculture water systems, along with a brief discussion of each:
---
1. *Swales*
**Description**: Swales are shallow, broad ditches dug along the contour of the land. They capture and slow down runoff, allowing water to infiltrate the soil and recharge groundwater.
**Benefits**: Prevent erosion, reduce water runoff, and create fertile zones for planting trees and crops.
**Use Case**: Ideal for sloping land to create microclimates and support agroforestry systems.
---
2. *Rainwater Harvesting*
**Description**: Collecting and storing rainwater from rooftops, gutters, and other surfaces in tanks or barrels.
**Benefits**: Provides a reliable water source for irrigation, reduces reliance on municipal water, and is cost-effective.
**Use Case**: Suitable for urban and rural settings, especially in areas with seasonal rainfall.
---
3. *Greywater Systems*
**Description**: Reusing water from sinks, showers, and laundry for irrigation or other non-potable uses.
**Benefits**: Reduces freshwater demand, recycles nutrients, and minimizes wastewater.
**Use Case**: Commonly used in homes and small-scale permaculture systems.
---
4. *Ponds and Dams*
**Description**: Man-made or natural water bodies designed to store water for irrigation, livestock, or wildlife.
**Benefits**: Provide habitat for aquatic life, store large volumes of water, and can be used for aquaculture.
**Use Case**: Suitable for larger properties with sufficient space and water sources.
---
5. *Keyline Design*
**Description**: A land management technique that uses contour plowing and subsoil ripping to direct water flow and improve soil hydration.
**Benefits**: Enhances soil fertility, reduces erosion, and distributes water evenly across the landscape.
**Use Case**: Effective in broadacre farming and large-scale permaculture projects.
---
6. *Mulching*
**Description**: Covering the soil with organic materials like straw, leaves, or wood chips to retain moisture and reduce evaporation.
**Benefits**: Conserves water, improves soil health, and suppresses weeds.
**Use Case**: Widely used in gardens, orchards, and food forests.
---
7. *Drip Irrigation*
**Description**: A system of tubes and emitters that deliver water directly to plant roots at a slow, steady rate.
**Benefits**: Highly efficient, reduces water waste, and minimizes weed growth.
**Use Case**: Ideal for vegetable gardens, orchards, and arid regions.
---
8. *Chinampas*
**Description**: Raised garden beds surrounded by water channels, inspired by ancient Aztec agricultural systems.
**Benefits**: Maximizes water use, creates fertile growing conditions, and supports diverse crops.
**Use Case**: Suitable for wetlands or areas with high water tables.
---
9. *Contour Trenches*
**Description**: Trenches dug along the contour of the land to capture and hold water, similar to swales but narrower and deeper.
**Benefits**: Prevents runoff, recharges groundwater, and supports tree planting.
**Use Case**: Effective in arid and semi-arid regions.
---
10. *Aquaponics*
**Description**: A closed-loop system that combines aquaculture (raising fish) with hydroponics (growing plants in water).
**Benefits**: Efficiently uses water, produces both fish and vegetables, and recycles nutrients.
**Use Case**: Suitable for small-scale urban farming and areas with limited space.

Summary
Permaculture water systems are diverse and adaptable to various climates and landscapes. They emphasize the efficient use of water, soil health, and ecosystem resilience. By integrating these systems, permaculture practitioners can create sustainable and productive environments that work in harmony with natural water cycles.
The storytelling and walk-through make the tale kind of fun. Sounds like it was quite the challenge!

Is it one of those bladder tanks to collect water in? Made out of some kind of rubber, silicone, aI don't know what?
I saw someone in Portugal instal one. Much cheaper than a tank. I think it held something like 2-5000 litres.
@@permissiontoshine This one 100000 litres. Help!
This is a two days ago video?. Yesterday 19,2 mm in Aroche. Here 16 mm with rain at the begining then 3 cms. of snow.
@@danielgomez-ik4qq Yes. I've forgotten to publish it. Sorry
@@danielgomez-ik4qq SNOW?
Yes, I live in a litlle village in Segovia, the north of Guadarrama mountains, 1152 meters above sea level
Here the snow is normal, about 15 or 20 days of snow in a year. At least until the last winters. I have seen snowfalls of 60 centimeters and 17 degrees below zero
