The VII Pioneer Meeting took place for the 3rd time in Dresden from August 15 to 21, 1982. An achievement show of the young and Thälmannpioniere was also a topic of the meeting. To the resolutions of the X. Party Congress of the SED and 11th Parliament of the FDJ the pioneers gave account. Three of the eight central pioneer meetings of the GDR pioneer organization "Ernst Thälmann" took place in Dresden: the I. from 18 to 25 August 1952, the II. from 12 to 18 August 1955 and the VII. from 15 to 22 August 1982.

I grew up in the western part of Germany, my childhood was in the 70s, youth in the 80s and I found life much simpler than it is today.Three TV channels (until mid 80s) plus one from NL and one from B - which was more than enough. We'd spend much time outside, especially during spring, summer and autumn and of course, also in winter when there was snow. There was no pressure amongst the kids to wear a certain fashion brand and there was simply no consumer terror as you find it today. Now coming back to my previous comment, yes - I believe that kids inn eastern Germany had a good childhood too. However, I knew people whose parents applied for an exit visa because they wanted to move to western Germany and from that moment on their tranquil life became a gauntlet. The children were excluded from almost all social events (e.g. pioneer organization and FDJ) and their life at school was made very difficult and quite painful. We lost sight of each other, but they always spoke hatefully about that time.

I'm sure that children in the GDR had a nice childhood (as long as their parents didn't dare to apply for an exit visa to West Germany)
