    Arabella is so smart. She ignored your go left command in pursuit of outside because it was straight ahead.

      RibbitHopX that’s why they train them so well, such a smart girl! They are trained to find outside, even if I give the wrong directions such as go left or go right, if I keep saying outside, she will hopefully find it :-)

      Carola in Paris LOL, thank you, she is incredibly intelligent! That’s why I do these videos, I want to educate the public on how to assist a person with a visual impairment better. Saying over there, or just go that way and then turn right, just not enough information. I’m sure you could tell as I was trying to find outside the ladies directions were so confusing.

      It can be quite strong reflex to say over there and point.. they may even know how they should guide her but still accidentally point...

    I couldn't imagine all the smells you take in at a food court. The escalator would make me nervous with my eyes closed. Couldn't imagine that. Great job to Miss Arabella for finding outside and guiding you to the bushes. She's such a good/smart girl. You two make a great team, keep up the great work both of you. Sending love xoxox

      Moving stairs basically. You have to know when to step off, otherwise, you get a toe stub at the top. It's really scary to see because each step is kind of like a stripe pattern. It's hard to describe at the moment, someone else might be better at it.

    I love how your dog is ignoring your "left" commands because there was a wall in the way and she was so sure she was going to lead your in the right direction. It's just so amazing to see her helping you navigate. Also keep up the amazing work, your videos really inspire me to do more for others and to not give up in life! Keep it up and greetings from the Netherlands ♥️

      I don't think those people noticed she was blind. If you just glance around (especially if you're busy looking a your phone) and not really look at the people around you, a person with a dog wouldn't necessarily stand out. Besides, from what I've seen guide dogs are more than up to the challenge of navigating crowds (-:

    This might be helpful: since you can't see exits but you can feel textures obviously maybe you should try to learn the texture of those carpeted floors with sometimes grooved lines or squares near the entrances/exits I'm assuming for if it was wet out people can wipe their feet or have texture on the floor to not slip

    You're not alone, I get lost in big shopping malls as well and I can see where I'm going. There are times I have thought if there was a fire or other emergency, where would I run to get out. I'm sure you must get a lot of funny looks, walking with a guide dog and shooting video. Is this Arabella's first visit to this mall? I'd imagine, maybe wrongly, that after a few trips to the mall, you'd have a better understanding of the layout and the floor is pretty flat and unobstructed and no traffic to contend with. Shopping Malls, a blessing for the visually impaired?

    I’m already terrified of escalators, so to go on one blind... I don’t know how you do it, you’re incredibly brave. I’m losing my sight I used to have perfect vision until I was 14, I’m 20 now and anything further than my arms length in front of me I can’t see without glasses. And my vision is steadily getting worse. So I’m watching these videos to prepare I guess. Thank you for your bravery especially posting this video.

    • @JoyRoss
      @JoyRoss  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Amy Mahoney i’m sorry about the kind of abrupt ending LOL, and no, that girl wouldn’t potty after all that. Once we made it back inside, I FaceTimed my daughter in the mall to help me locate Express clothing store. Then I did a little shopping in Express, and went back down the escalator to Macy’s. The next video I filmed was navigating through Macy’s trying to find assistance. I didn’t even think about how I was going to piece this video together, and in the midst of the craziness of navigating, shopping, and keeping up with kids, I forgot to make some kind of an ending LOL.

      The shoes help them with the escalator. Dogs are very careful with their front feet, but they sometimes forget to mind their back feet so they wear the shoes so if their feet get caught in the escalator it won’t tear up their feet. They’ll also use shoes on hot days, or on slick surfaces like snow.

    I’ve grown up with a best friend who is blind and it always boggles my mind how strange people are, especially when giving directions. It’s second nature for me to not vaguely describe things or point, and verbalizing feelings along with making faces etc is just sort of how I roll, but it seems like it should be second nature for people when they become aware that someone has a visual impairment. People act differently strange for different disabilities and it’s so strange for me, having recently become a wheelchair user and people are aggressively nice to me or look at me like I’m a kicked puppy because I’m young and in a chair. It’s so different from how people treat my friend when they’re being weird. Sorry for the ramble lol, just ongoing observations of disabled life

      Joy Ross It's okay. It healed through the night. I just wanted to try it because I have blind friends and I'm curious ' What does it feel like to be blind?' So I did that. 2 years ago..... I know now not to do it. We each are born with special things, but it comes with difficulties. I am hard of hearing and it's sometimes hard to heat people, even with my hearing aid. You were (born blind?) and it's hard to see, and go places, even with your dog.

    I will train my own disability dog for mobility and anxiety. How do you socialize them knowing most people and dogs can’t pet them?

    • @elliemccarthy5672
      @elliemccarthy5672 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      LunaBelleBunny you can socialize them without their vest at dog friendly places like parks and stores such as Home Depot. Some pre schools might allow you to bring your dog if you contact them and pre plan it and every thing to get the dog used to kids. As far as dogs, meeting dogs on walks and having puppy play dates is good. By socializing your service dog prospect a ton, they are able to focus more when they are working in public. Granted you will have to train them to stay focused when their are distractions like other dogs and people, but the first step is to teach your dog that dogs and people are not scary or a threat.

      If I allow petting at 8 weeks and later on walks how do I curb it later?

      My trainer said the puppy is fitted for a harness early on, do I not use it all the time?

    • @elliemccarthy5672

      Any dog, service or pet, must be able to accept strangers and not be reactive (ie aggressive). That is the first step when training your puppy for public access. Before you start doing any service dog stuff, you have to master the basic puppy stuff. You want to desensitize your dog to the harness (I assume you mean a mobility harness similar to a guide dog harness, not a gentle leader style harness), but remember, you can't do weight bearing mobility tasks until they are two years old and their growth plates have been x rayed. When your dog is fully trained, they should still be allowed to be a normal dog and walk un-vested, indicating to the dog and the public that they are not working and that, once cued, are allowed to give affection to the petter. You just have to be consistant: unvested= social interactions allowed when you give their release word, vested= must pay attention to you even when someone tries to pet them. In terms of "curbing it," I assume you mean making sure your dog doesn't react or lose focus when in public and working. An exercise you can do is if you walk past a person (vested) and they get distracted/want to be pet, cue "watch me" or whatever you teach them to look at you. If the dog ignores you, take a few steps away from the person and cue watch me again. Keep backing away from the person until you get their attention, and then heavily reward. Keeping a service dog's attention is not a quick thing to learn, but socializing and desensitizing is super important for young pups or any dog, as I said before. Dogs naturally want to be pet and meet new people (normally), you just have to train them that their is a time and a place fore it. I don't have a service dog but I am training my golden retriever puppy who is now 8 months. On walks he knows that he is not allowed to just go up to random people and ask for attention. He stays focussed on me and only if I tell him to sit, and then say "At ease!" (his release word- basically means to him "okay I can do what I want now" such as eat his meal, go play, go outside, etc). Only then can he interact with the new people/dog. Remember- before your dog is a service dog, they are a dog, and must have time to be a normal dog. This is super long but hope I helped a little bit! A great channel on service dog stuff is "Leo and Sunshine" th-cam.com/channels/J-qvAnk_SK7ro24vVOvzbQ.html . He is training his golden pup to be a mobility and psych alert service dog.

      Jade Williams Dogs tend to mindful of their front legs, but forget about their back legs, so the booties protects the back legs Incase they don’t lift their feet from getting torn up

      Matilda You can buy those harnesses off eBay and other websites as family members sell off their dead relatives possessions. The old lady’s family may have bought it for her as she wanted her dog with her at all times for companionship. A real working dog would literally never bark and go at another dog. People buy dead people’s disabled parking badges too. It’s becoming a real problem.

    :Me: but you can’t see??? ( this is a joke I have a blind friend and she talks like she is not blind in a sentence this is wha she says “can we look at the flowers” people get confused and some people tell her she is faking being blind or faking a guide dog but she will not change the way she speaks just because she is blind.
