It is not necessary newer artist... It is just a different artist, I wouldn't consider Jessi new at all, or the members of 2am... It is not uncommon for the competitor to be someone well established

ATEEZ is the only boy group to win more than once (3 times out of 4 appearances in the last year) and tied with 3 wins overall for any K-pop group with Mamamoo (highly recommend watching that female k-pop group, one of the best and their vocals are insanely good). so it's a big deal to perform on here at all and for the 3 of ATEEZ's performances that they won, they did it in front of the original singer. it's been really good exposure for them in Korea.

Immortal songs is a competition where artists / singers compete against each other there's most of the time a theme or an artist (that they invite when they can to judge) for each show it's always a great opportunity for the participants to show their talent in special performances that they wouldn't have the opportunity to do anywhere else it is a singing contest first but ateez proved that you can win with performance, singing, rapping and dancing
actually they performed that song for this competition first and they got such a great reaction from fans that they filmed an MV later as a gift and this summer they released their version digitally in their album "season songs" this song was a cover from an old kpop group Turbo (who was in the audience) and I believe this was actually a child song first so that's why there are some cute dance moves... they kept some of the original dance moves and added some new and some of their own songs too
