I've been in class since January 13th and couldn't understand my professor's way of teaching permutations. I finally got it! Thanks Patrick! I thought I was an unteachable dummy and was bound to fail statistics. I'm crying tears of joy.

Literally my mind is blown...relating it to the multiplication principle completely flipped the mental switch for me! Thanks so much for your amazing video!

usually there is some unique quality assigned to each object, you will use permutations.
for example: if there are 10 people, and we pick 3 people for the job of president, vice president, and secretary, we are giving the people we pick different jobs, and so, they have a 'unique' quality compared to the others so we use permutations.
suppose we have 10 people, and we pick 3 people to judge a contest. now, there are all the same (all judges) so we use combinations

Okay I've always hated permutations and combinations ever since I first took them in High school.I thought I'd never stumble upon them in college again, but I'm currently majoring in CS so my courses include Discrete Mathematics & Probability & I study permutations in both.So far,I never thought I'd comprehend them. But having seen this amazing, clear and simply explained video of yours my whole hatred towards them disappeared. You're one of the few great people out there. So,THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUU ! Very well organized, it helped me to memorize the formula and most importantly how to use it :) and the conditions regarding permutations. I am taking a Discrete Structure 1 class at City College of New York, and the way you explain things are clearer than my professor. He's been there for almost 20 years, explaining same stuff over and over again to student throughout the years, I see lots of friction on him :) Can't trust college education nowadays :)

if we did not use this definition, many theorems and proofs would have to have a special case to make things work out
