No mention here about the fact that Carter was told the mission was nearly impossible and that Beckwith suggested the mission be scrubbed prior to this incident. Carter ordered the mission continue on because his poll numbers were not looking good. Americans considered Carter weak. A hostage rescue would surely change the American voters opinion on Carter so he ordered the mission go on despite Beckwiths concerns. I’m addition, this was not a failed mission. The mission was aborted. The crash happened during the movement to head back to base. This was not a failure of the military. This was a failure of the Carter administration and Carter himself.
@hoot1141 Bud is a beer. And you assume that just because it was the WRONG decision, it was done by Carter for purely personal reasons. That is a common tactic for people, ascribing base and selfish motives to pm those they disagree with or dislike. I think that Carter had military advisers who advised in favor of this action and military advisers who advised against it. He made the wrong decision, but I do not think he made it just to improve his standing in the polls or anything like that. Finally, your nitpicking about what constitutes a "failed mission" is really silly. The bottom line is that they did not accomplish their objective (which was freeing the hostages and getting them out of Iran), so in most people's view, that would constitute a failed mission. And I do not think that that lessens the criticism that can be placed upon Carter.
It was a pitiful and pathetic plan and should never have been attempted. I'm a thirty year retired military helicopter pilot and the operation was doomed from the minute they thought of it. If they had made it to where the hostages were, it would have been much, much worse. Just ludicrous.

This account isn't borne out by facts on the ground which appear to demonstrate the C-130 crashed into the helicopters. In the C-130-helicopter wreckage the rotor blades are all intact while the propellers on one wing of the C-130 are shredded. Before anyone states that the military don't lie, two words, Jessica Lynch.
Conspiracy much? Who hit what is a factor. The biggest problem was the way the mission was thrown together and the different services inability by choice or abilities to meld together for a successful mission. That is well documented.
Fairly decent film but it did not give forth the details that it was the US marine corps that caused the disaster. First of all they did not maintain helicopters properly so they were flight-worthy. Second of all they were not trained to fly in adverse weather conditions if you can believe it? They could only fly VFR as opposed to IFR flight rules. And lastly they flew their helicopter into Air Force C-130 and killed five Air Force personnel and three Marines in the process and scuttled the mission completely and brought shame on the nation. Please tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you God. All United States Army personnel were able to get off of the aircraft in time thank God before they blew up and burned up.
Indeed. They couldn’t find properly capable helicopter pilots in the Navy, and the Marines while better still didn’t come close to what was needed. TF160 was born.
The worst part of the decision to try the operation was Carter's insistence that it be a combined special forces effort. Back then the different branches had very poor communications outside of the Pentagon. Had he just sent Seals and Marine amphibious forces and trained properly the outcome would have been totally different. I was aboard the USS Okinawa LPH-3 for this mission.
If I remember correctly, Delta Force was ready to go long before they were given the okay from president Carter. Col.Beckwith had to sell himself to his superiors that they could pull this off... President Carter wasn't easy to convince about this rescue... in the book " Delta Force " by Charlie A. Beckwith .
This mission is also why the Special Operation Command (SOCOM) was founded. Communication was poor between the branches' special forces in 1980; also not helpful was Col. Beckwith's perceived "ordering around" of Navy Admirals and Army and Air Force Generals.
I am from iran and i feel so sad when see this. god knows what they felt in iran and even till today :( . i really dont know to what to say. i have borderline personality and im sure i cannot forget pilot face any more its gonna hunt me aswel , im just sry because my country did many bad things.
Then, as now, this was a one way suicide mission. Landing in the middle of Tehran, rounding up the hostages, fighting your way in as well as out, hopelessly short of firepower, refueling and flying out. No country could even consider this operation even today except the USA with its resources What Carter would not do is punish Iran until they came to reason instead they come up with this hair brained idea that could not possibly succeed. For the Marine naval aviator, the error and collision, which could not be avoided, it likely saved lives. Leaving the dead behind was inexcusable and unsupportable, it appears Beckwith panicked
That pretty much sealed Jimmy Carter's re-election bid. He lost it because of the disaster. My heart goes out to the families & friends of those we lost, & survived. Survivor guilt is tough. RIP.

@Branden Lee Killing people is easy, anyone can wipe people off the face of the earth, all they need to a bomb and no heart. But if your equipment chokes in dust and your so-called special forces blow themselves up in the desert, that's just not on.
@Branden Lee having said that, to be fair the bangled iran hostage rescue mission was ultimately due to incompetence. Besides you are totally wrong, the US military still uses all the equipment used during that mission namely MC-130E Combat Talons and EC-130E Hercules and RH-53 Sea Stallion helicopters.
@Branden Lee there are no phased out variants just added upgrades of onboard equipment. But again, the operation failed because it was poorly planned not because they needed futuristic helicopters to pull it off.

Did we analyze any of the reasons the Iran saw us as antagonists? Helping to assassinate their president in the 50's (and the after effects) might have something to do with it.
There are many versions of truth!!
But;Have we learned anything from our past mistakes??
Doesn't seem like it tbh
@Alex Al Looking at these commments, mostly not.
I have it on good authority that the fuel truck driver lived.
Good for him. Hopefully, he didn't get into trouble for "losing" his fuel load.
The passenger in the truck died, only the driver lived and escaped. Yeah, they killed a civilian.

Is that why 50 people died
So I guess those burnt soldiers werent on God's side...
And the driver of the tuck !?
@@kreemo916 he had some injury on his right eye from broken glass otherwise there is a footage of him back on the site to check on his truck which nothing left of it

When the US government handed out a handful of helicopters in the middle of desert to its enemy
The 160th SOAR “Night Stalkers” came about from this operation.
کمتر مزخرف بگو خائن
Then, as now, this was a one way suicide mission. Landing in the middle of Tehran, rounding up the hostages, fighting your way in as well as out, hopelessly short of firepower, refueling and flying out. No country could even consider this operation even today except the USA with its resources What Carter would not do is punish Iran until they came to reason instead they come up with this hair brained idea that could not possibly succeed. For the Marine naval aviator, the error and collision, which could not be avoided, it likely saved lives. Leaving the dead behind was inexcusable and unsupportable, it appears Beckwith panicked
Our CC told us about it in boot camp.
I live in Iran. Near to tabas the city wich this happend😁😁😁😁😁😁🇮🇷

That pretty much sealed Jimmy Carter's re-election bid. He lost it because of the disaster. My heart goes out to the families & friends of those we lost, & survived. Survivor guilt is tough. RIP.
Carter wasn't reelected MOSTLY because he was a tragically poor president. He had very bad relations with Congress, and couldn't accomplish much (if anything) on his reform (taxes, healthcare, etc.) agenda. He was a terrible micromanager. He was--still is--a person of admirable character, but his post-Presidential career/accomplishments outshine his Presidential term.
I'm guessing US was inspired by Entebbe rescue. Which was a spectacular success.
i was in Iran in the 70's late 80's threw out the war, i always found it odd how much the world underestimate us , i don't think they realize we are nothing like Arabs and majority of Iranians hate Islam and the government so bad that it would make Americans blush if you said the word Islam in a Iranians house without cameras around! We have fought hand to hand for thousands of years we brough 60% of the world under our control with swords and shields, we controlled 90 percent of Greece for over 200 years, the thought that Iraq and 20 or 30 country's backing Saddam would bring us to our knees was insulting to us ! we didn't fight for Islam as we are disgusted by it more than people understand, we fought Iraq and the 30 or so country's supporting him, to show the world we rather all die before another Arab or none ethnic Iranian/turk would put boots on our land while one of us is still breathing ! may God wash away the pilots hurt, you didn't do anything wrong and Americans are one of the most brave and kindest people the world has ever seen no honest man could say anything less about American men !
Just listening to these 7 minutes were horrifying.
I hope that this invitation to speak openly was in some way therapeutic to Mr. Schaefer.
I’d also like to hear from those four secret service agents...
Carter had reduced funding for equipment and training for the military so much that they were not prepared for such a complex mission.
Thanks for going men and welcome home.
I can’t believe he used the term “secret agent.”
The Delta force made three mistakes.
1-Never try to attack IRAN because IRAN is different.
2-The Hollywood movies are much different than real life.
3-Why didn't the Americans ask Chuck Norris for this mission.
Task Force 160th! Death waits in the Dark!
Thanks Allah 🇮🇷❤
So which is worse? This failure or the 2021 Departure from Afghanistan?
Both were huge blunders.
I’m sorry this happened for both sides but Iran is changing and the future is bright for both sides
Iran's young are worldly and want good change, but come on, the old religious guard in Iran are playing nuclear follies with the world. This will hold back the country until they stop..

And the fuel truck driver?
Definitely died, but theyre not going to say that because it would make America look bad!
In the documentary he left the truck and hopped in with another truck behind him then they headed back into town

Yup
So tragic
Wow
I think that is would have been much, much worse if they made it to the embassy. Probably would have lost a lot of hostages and military guys.

The US Navy during that time, was a gathering of far too many drug and alcohol abusers. The cultural expectations of that time tolerated such perverse conduct.
I saw it. It was shocking.
Another crash and s.itshow on Nimitz, later led to lasting changes.
Drug testing. Zero tolerance. More professional expectations.
It probably *would* have been a "piece of cake". US military had already gone through a similar rescue attempt at Son Tay, not to mention Cabanatuan and Los Banos POW camp raids in WWII.
Is this documentary on Netflix?
4th grade teacher ,said they are directly involved .my teacher knows there involved in terrorism.
Iran not war
that poor pilot, it doesn’t seem it was his fault the air traffic controller couldn’t see because of the dust and guided him the wrong direction.
Sounds Iike a complete clusterfuck, no scenario training, a charismatic gun-ho leader and no weather reports... yup sounds just like the US Army 😏
I remember this. The military leaders failed to train the right folks with the right training to get this job done. When regan became president iran released the rest. Canada helped quite a bit.
Pretty sure it was Cco 1st Ranger Bn that stopped the bus. They had been sent in with the D-Boys to pull security.
It was amateur night, you can tell. US military equipment can't handle the desert sand, it was the case in iraq when tanks and apc broke down choked by dust, it was the case in Afghanistan when blackhawks and chinooks couldn't perform as in the dust and pentagon had to buy Russian Mi17s for the Afghans...
@Branden Lee but those weren't involved in eagle claw
Damn
Talk about a jinxed mission ! May be the disaster averted something more horrific it they made it to the embassy ,despite they piece of cake outlook
