  • Henry Wood (James Dunn) and man loved and respected by his community has passed away. He was a hard-working, unassuming man, and it isn't until his passing that his children and the community realize what a treasure of a human being he was. A heartwarming tale, produced by the Protestant Film Commission. Jack Larson, best known as TV's Jimmy Olsen on "The Adventures of Superman," guest stars as Henry's son.

Some years ago I was driving to Los Angeles from San Diego, and listening to NPR. The host of the show said that he would be interviewing librettist, Jack Larson. I said to myself, the only Jack Larson I know of (besides the textile designer and interior designer Jack Lenor Larson) was the actor who portrayed Jimmy Olsen on the old Superman TV show. This couldn't possibly be the same Jack Larson. Then "Jack Larson" began to speak, and it was the unmistakable voice of Jimmy Olsen. Finally, at the end of the show, the host mentioned that people probably knew Jack Larson best as an actor on the old Superman show. It turned out that Larson had given up acting and went into writing libretti for various composers, among them Virgil Thomson.

I've loved James Dunn since viewing his early movies from the 1930's. There are many times I escaped watching early black and white films to cope with family problems, no matter how many long hours I worked, I always stayed up late to watch old black and white, long before the internet was created. Finding out that James Dunn battled with Alcohol, was unfortunate, as I tried to escape the dysfunctional mess my stepfather's drinking did to hurt my siblings and my mother. May those men and women, who have passed on , RIP .

Thank you for the interesting movie. Allene Roberts would reunite with Jack Larson on The Adventures of Superman in three episodes (2 in 1952, and 1 in 1954) on TV. Loved her in The Red House (1947). Had that pretty "girl-next-door" quality about her that I liked. James Dunn is best remembered for A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and the three films he did with Shirley Temple in the 30's, including Bright Eyes, which introduced On the Good Ship Lollypop. Stand Up and Cheer, and Baby, Take a Bow being the other two. All three people mentioned were pretty good actors, and are greatly missed.

Our children are our future. We’re not only need to love them, but protect them from the horrific evil that is being done to this country. ! we so need uplifting movies like this and we need to start believing in our faith in God ! this can be great country once again, and not just for ourselves, but to be able to help all countries all over the world! Beautiful movie!!!❤ so let’s all stand proud that we are Americans. Let’s stand tall and start fighting back so we can keep this great country, strong.

American culture changed in he 60's. True. But LBJ's "Great Society" was only a part of the change. Vietnam and the British musical invasion led by The Beatles were a part of that change. Moreover, America was never like this film, more like it than than it is today or in the 60's and 70's, etc. This film represents what we'd like to be, an idealized version. Great film though; I love it and like the values presented here.

Progressivism reared its ugly head in the late 1800s. All governments go through growing pains with ups and downs.
Some feel the most pivotal year was 1913-1914, when the federal reserve got its strangle hold on the monetary system. World war II sent boys to all corners of the world and farming and a local community lost its luster when they came back home. Women were put in factories to work like never before. WW I was a nail in the family coffin and WW II cinched it. Even with the baby boomers on the way, societies degradation from wholesome family values was well on its way. The government in the sixties was behind the drugs , sex and rock n roll culture furthering the decay. Legalized abortion solidified the moral decay. 1945- 1963 were the best times that the nation as a whole appeared to benefit from. . Each decade since the Civil war has contributed in some ways to the decay of America. There have been some positive strides but not enough to keep the glue of a healthy society in place.

Yes, the 'golden rules', really are just that. I know many today don't believe in a loving Creator and have made themselves their own gods in that manner of thinking. But Jesus Christ made it clear that if we put God first than others, then ourselves, society would benefit and flow. Rarely is that belief system followed. We are in a world of shallow morals and shallow thought processes. If people REALLY meditated on the principle of God first, then your fellow man, every step they take in a day would change the course of that day for the better for others as well as themselves. Even simple 'thank you's ', or 'have a nice day', seem to be out of the natural realm for many. Sad times are present but I believe that after a big ,'storm', better times are ahead because of a very necessary, Divine intervention!
      Have a great day! 😀

42:55, a great ending! From here, Mary gets to be treasurer and diverts funds into the Mary Needs a New Fur Coat and some Jewels to go with Her NEW CAR Fund. Great plot twist! I saw that wink from her.

Are you saying that things weren't always as perfect as portrayed in 1950s films of this type?

Chump. Word about town is about the guy who drives the old, old car will give you a lift and all his money if you give him a hard luck story. Henry Would give you a lift and you can take him for a ride. Yada, yada, yada. Give until you die before age of fifty.

I hated the 1950 trite and start of anti communist movies, and push for religion. Uggh too bad actors had to succumb to this trite to make a living.
