- Aug. 9, 1974: President Richard Nixon delivered a farewell address to staffers just before his resignation was set to take effect.
"We want you to be proud of what you've done. We want you to continue to serve in government if that is your wish," he said. "Always give your best. Never get discouraged. Never be petty. Always remember others may hate you but those who hate you don't win unless you hate them. And then you destroy yourself."

The humility. One of the best speeches I've heard from a politician
It was a sad day for me 50 years ago to see this history. Like or hate him, this is what a true leader was. He put the country first not politcal party or himself. It was great to vist the Nixon library this week for the first time, you learn the real history of this man and his accomplishments by visiting his library. i will probably get a lot of hate for writing this.
I was a child when this happened. He went out with a lot of class. He was one of our most intelligent presidents. This speech encouraged me a lot when my mother died. I thought the light had gone from my life forever, but I went on.
@@Juulmand1 Thank you for sharing that.
I love that C-SPAN is just uploading 50 year old clips of the end of the Nixon administration
President Nixon Farewell Address to Staffers 1408pm 9.8.24 i stand corrected, i was born by the time this presidential let down occurred. hardly the shape of things to come - as it seems American politics is riven with strife such as this. he seems to be losing it, here, as he wings it ie: seemingly makes an off-the-cuff speech to the white house staff he's leaving behind.... you could stand outside any door and talk very loudly in the vain hope of being heard and still not make any inroads into the situation or sentiments of a man such as this - as he wanders aimlessly down the road of poetic whimsy. was he the American renaissance-man, spoken of on occasion, cast out by the rudimentary and ritual savagery of the American political wasteland?
Because it's the 50th anniversary of Nixon's resignation
@@nathancoggins Comments on ‘President Nixon Farewell Address to Staffers’ 11.8.24 0537am i wonder if this was the only ever presidential goodbye to staff filmed for the tv audience? i would like to see other presidents bow out to their staff.... it'd be interesting... he seems very down, here.... what became of nixon, anyone know?
@@JJONNYREPP became really depressed upon leaving the White House and dealt with a serious and almost lethal bout of phlebitis in September or October ‘74 in which he was hospitalized for awhile. He did the Frost/Nixon interviews in 1977 and then spent the rest of the years trying to rebuild his image into that of an elder statesmen; offering advice to succeeding presidents. He died April 1994.
@@guerreroseventyfour1819 President Nixon Farewell Address to Staffers 1134AM 11.8.24 CHEERS!!! very odd that this piece of americana is glossed over. there are still reverberations to this day..and some aspects of the media and govenrment probably cough when this nixon issue is raised. it is intriguing, as is the weird and wonderful and, at times, frightening world of nowadays american politics. seems to be a load of public and media obfuscation prior to whatever it is being deemed the issue is "dealt" with. whereas, re: UK politics, the ooo-ha is dealt with behind closed doors prior to anything that needs to be dealt with or clarified is brought to public the domain. either way, we THE people/ WE the people/ we the PEOPLE, are never any the wiser and it is, usually, a case of: so what!? i've lost inetrest... or go eff a pig!! unless an assassination takes place then everyone is agog and/or distraught and/or amazed etc etc (delete as applicable) at the turn of events. weird thing ameircan politics. various agendas, with reference to media reporting and political affiliations, do not lessen the intrigue, the fudging, the lies, the deceit, the bemusement, the inability to complete the job at had. i doubt any president has been able to undertake his job to any satisfacory degree due to everything he wants ot achive being deemed communist infilatration, blatent right wing kow-towing, contrary to the bill or rights (rites??? ahahhahaa)... or down right insane. faux assassination attempts aside - that secret service man must have been a mean shot - i doubt american politics resemables anything relating to whatever it is those early pioneers fought for - whatever it was they fought for..... now everyone is pining for a nostalgia they never knew. which is the basis of myth, nationsl pride and that every mysterious tenet: law and order.
“Only if you’ve been in the deepest valley, can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain.”
"Never be petty", politicians these days could learn a thing or two from this guy
You’re goddamn right. Important speech right here.
Would love to see Kamala say something close to this
Flawed as he became, he loved his country and respected the voices that told him he had to go. We need that courage in 2024!
President Nixon should never have resigned.
He was a great man.
Nixon was sentimental about our country❤.
💁♀️ I witnessed and remember this moment in history 👀!!
President Nixon Farewell Address to Staffers 1354pm 9.8.24 i dont recall this as i dont think i'd been born yet... though if i ever got that kindda standing ovation i reckon it'd be somewhat embarrassing though very heartwarming to recall, in one's latter years, to feel at least someone had an appreciative inkling for the stance one had taken.....

@@sunshine4sue2 President Nixon Farewell Address to Staffers 1412pm 9.8.24 indeed.... a heady thing, this peace - refer to japanese peace ceremonies beset with controversy - and i wonder if old nixon had a dig, there, regards the people who had scuppered his tenure as he decided that hating those how had messed it all up (to put it mildly) for him were the losers.... or whether he as suggesting he was no different from his detractors in that sense...??????? an odd state of affairs, and american politics seem to choose the most nonsensical events to highlight as being the reason the reason a president should leave office....
14:42, Nixon with glasses👓
Richard Nixon was a great man.
The Uni-party DemocRAT's RINOS) kicked Richard Nixon out.
Thank God Reagan came along.
God Bless America.
I am shocked that this is the first time I have heard this speech from Nixon. I have watched a kazillion documentaries on his presidency, and on his fall from grace. Even if, like all politicians, this was an exercise in rewriting of reality, it is still amazing. The grace, the humility, the exposing of a flawed human being that had aspired to greatness…and you compare that to the whining, self-serving hatred and anger of Trump…well, it’s just mind-blowing. How could so many Americans have lost any sense of decency and principles?
If Nixon hadn't of done, what he did, but fly on the straight and narrow. He'd still be in the White House. Greed always brings a person down.
President Nixon Farewell Address to Staffers 1358pm 9.824 he was, as they say, the top cheese... so maybe took the blows for the others he stood to lead. used to work that way... until the underlings decided creating a patsy to be the butt of all the wrongs committed in his name. as for the staff who seem to outlast the governmental office tasked with running the nation's affairs.... maybe they're the problem - putting the mockers on policies he wanted to implement, giving the nod to the secret service should they feel he was not the republican they thought him to be................................................................................................................. chief whips of the house as they call them in the UK...
not Trump.....YET!

Despite his flaws Nixon did a lot of good things for this nation.
What would Nixon say about Trump today?
Who knows? But he knew him very well
Richard Nixon, after seeing an interview with Donald Trump, wrote a letter to him wherein he encouraged Trump to run for president.
So, considering that Donald Trump became President Trump, Nixon would say "I was right."
People of Bangladesh had been deprived of this particular moment as things dramatically changed in the noon hours of Aug 05, 2024 with the "Changing of the Guard"
Lesson learned :
Better to take responsibility and depart with grace rather than sneak out to the land of Primates & Primitives, at least thousands of years behind in an era of Global connectivity of 21st century, that has exponentially increased Global QI level & vocabulary to unfathomable degrees
President Nixon Farewell Address to Staffers 1351pm 9.8.24 seems to be nixonmania this week with regards to archival news skits or generic nixon chit chat... good luck, sir.
MEANWHILE WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR VETS ON DRUGS NO GOOD
I guess Biden is about to step down hand over the keys
Thanking his staff like Cheney and Roger Stone. Absolutely disgusting. His a political loser
