For me, the Nikki Shadwick spiking story was the thing which led to Brookside entering its ultimately fatal nosedive. Nothing wrong with the acting, nothing especially wrong with the writing. But the Shadwicks had not been well established, the Musgroves not at all. And yet, overnight, they were suddenly the heart of the show and we didn't really know their characters one bit. But then it just went on and on and on, going around in a tight circle with absolutely no progression from episode to episode. For the first time since the turn of the 90's, I began to miss episodes. I was bored by it. I'd tune in a few weeks later, hoping that things had moved on, only to find that it was like watching the exact same thing again. Through 1999, I started to miss months at a time. I wanted to continue to like it, but when I dipped back in it was STILL no further into the story. Eventually, I just gave up and abandoned it. On the odd occasion where I did catch an episode, it had become overcrowded with too many weak characters and the stories were either slow and boring or extreme and ridiculous. Poor old Brookie, it tanked heavily from 1999. The Jacqui Dixon surrogacy story had previously been patience testing during 1998.
