Fascinating look back. Thank you for it. Although the romanticism of nostalgia and appreciation somewhat glosses over the real fears at play -- the workers' intensity during the Depression, the owners' fear of getting tenants in a down economy, etc. - this kind of romanticism is quite practical. It tells us that if we do the hard work during tough times, that one day we can look back with satisfaction on a job well done. (And even though Top of the Rock is more fun to visit nowadays... ;) )
Boy it was bad...hundreds of entire families camping (living) in Central Park. Something our generation simply cannot get. Maybe this was a sign of hope, or at least something the next generation could try to aspire to?
I agree. Something changed in those few decades following our last World War... and, for better or for worse, we'd never quite build to the same scale again
Such an awesome building! I have my only pictures from the top (May 2003) that are on a dead laptop I have in a closet. I really could use some advice as how I could retrieve them.
@MikeKopac I think we still are, just the things we are doing are on a different scale (like this PC I'm typing on). America is still the leader of this world!
So they knocked down that beautiful building (Astoira), to replace it with a relatively ugly, massive one man vanity project. Don't get me wrong, it was a massive achievement in terms of engineering and sheer guts and hard work from the men employed. But really low wages for an extremely dangerous and hard day's graft, with only the dole queue afterwards? Exploitation at it's finest...
Empire State Building is one of the best looking skyscrapers on earth and overall one of the most recognizable buildings. It looks 10 better than most modern skyscrapers of today including those super slender towers that are in NYC now
@@georgeorwell9867 well maybe so, the previous structure did look very ornate and of it’s time. But imo I’ll always like the look of the ESB more maybe just because I like skyscrapers.
It is amazing how quickly they built the Empire State Building.
Incredible accomplishment...the greatest building in the world....period!
Charles C. Ebbets was a gorgeous photographer. We can all thank him for so much insight into these hard working mens days.
Hard workn real men

Strong blokes back then, too much eugenics these days.

@phillip krikorian A ridiculously misspelled insult just isn't that insulting.

@@supergeorge8603 Don't disagree with that, but as I said, relativley speaking, no where near as good looking as the previous building...

WHY THEY DLT ALL THE BLKPPL THO
Not a knock on any people, events or ideas associated with it, but that building itself is evil. You can just tell.
Building was already there before all those people came 😖
i would have prefered if NY was New Amsterdam, york yurghh, so white bread and bland.
