Just wanted to say thanks. I am a thirty year plus Master Tech but have moved into transmission rebuild recently and consider myself a Junior builder (been building mostly full time for just over 2 years) now. I have rebuilt 5 or 6 4R70/75’s and never had an issue until this latest. The unit works fine, shifts nice, performs well, but spit the converter seal out of the pump on the last test drive. I obviously replaced the bushings and even 3m weather striped the outside of the seal. The pump gears and pump were also checked for wear and were in great shape. I never really thought about placing the groove of the bushing on the bottom of the cavity and I didn’t realize the seal was designed with a lip on the inner portion. I enjoy this work very much because of these little things that are learned along the way and I will be paying a lot more attention to my bushing placement and pump seal retention from now on. Lots of great experience shared here!!!!! Thank You!!!

Wow thats Awesome! I was pretty much at that phase every year my first 5 years of building. After that it was still a full time job keeping up with learning all the new units and the details of they're weak points for the next 20 years or so. lots of ATSG seminars and reading research etc. It was a wild and exciting ride. Sometimes it was difficult, frustrating and even painful. Especially the day I had to have my finger sowed back on. But it was never ever boring. Thank you for reviving some memories.

I do want to ask you one more question and if you feel like helping great, if you don’t I completely understand and no disrespect at all. This 2008 4R75w that pushed the converter to pump bushing and front seal out is giving me a headache. I rebuilt the unit, replaced all the bushings, all the normal things on a proper rebuild. As I stated it was working well (I did do the Jmod stuff by the way) and on the final test drive pushed the bushing/seal forward. I had a 4R70w pump here in good shape. Most everything looked/quick measured the same but the stator hub was different (inner bushing treatment) and the return spring for the intermediate piston was different (wave spring/4R75, attached to pump caged assembly/4R70. So I swapped stators and used the pump body from the 4R70, bolted the pump back in, and installed the trans. Now it’s shifting/acting like it has a cross leak somewhere. It shifts up to OD but it’s slow then surges/falls in and out of OD and maybe lock up. I have another pump coming and feel like it’s going to fix it but do you have any input on the possible differences in those two pumps? I am also going to be checking my sealing rings/pump gasket to make sure I didn’t damage something there.

Great Video thanks, I am just about to undertake an AOD rebuild and have imported a heap of parts from the US to build something decent. I have never built a transmission before, this was very helpful for the pump portion of the build, thanks.

    Great information, thanks for sharing!
Lol, that training video is James with Transmission Bench! His videos are great too! Yes, they are slow, but he's being detailed and thorough for people not familiar with working on transmissions.

Be careful with some other transmission pumps the bushing needs to be pressed and installed out the back because there is a lip in the front that could be damaged trying to press out the front.

I'm working on a 4R70W replacing the front pump metal/copper bushing. I didn't take the old one out so I'm stuck as to the notch I know the notch with a groove goes down to the fluid hole inside the shaft housing I'm wondering is, do the notches face up or face down?

Thanks, learned a few things from you clip and agree the training video from bench transmissions is good, but some ‘old school sketchy processes should not be followed. I just purchased a dura-bond set of bushings and just noticed my pump bushing is coated and NO oil groove. Not sure what to think on that one…

Do I have to press the stator rings in before reinstalling the assembly? If so how would I go about that? The assembly just doesn't seem to be sliding back in all the way.

What is a guaranteed way to stop my 4r75e trans from blowing out the input shaft seal? It’s happened 2 times now after it got warm.

Great video. You methods are rock solid. Arbor press is the way to go.
Question. My neighbor couldn’t get his rebuilt 4R70W to seat and asked me to help. It was immediately obvious that the converter wasn’t lined up with the pump gear or maybe it had slipped out. He cranked it almost all the way in and was certainly putting pressure on the pump gear.
I pulled the seal and inspected what I could with a flashlight and I cant see any issues but should the pump come out?
On other vehicles that have a drive pin it usually breaks the pin but I don’t see what would be damaged in this design provided the gear itself isn’t damaged.
