    I think one thing that’s important about this song is Burr’s realization that if he wants to make progress in his career, to be in “the room”, he has to start taking action instead of “waiting for it”. This sets up the rest of the plot!

    Daveed Diggs embodies Jefferson in this performance. Pouring himself a glass of champagne. Yelling “put it in Virginia” during the argument about the capital just a little behind everyone else so you can clearly hear him. Also love his little dances.

    NYC was the nation's capital at first. The compromise that occured in "the room where t happened" was to move the capital to a spot on the Potomac River....the city of Washington D.C. did not exist yet! The area was/is a swamp. Before D.C. was built, the capital moved from NYC to Philadelphia for awhile.

    Hi, your Hamilton fact peddler is here to thank you for your reaction and drop some Hamilton Theatre Facts! There are some awesome things about this song that I love. The choreography is a marvel, and I can't wait for you to see it during a full movie watch. However, some impressive things about the music were pointed out by Howard Ho, who did a TH-cam series on the music of Hamilton. I'll share some of his insights, but please do watch his videos when you finish Hamilton, even if it's on your own!
    A classic musical trope is the "I Want" song. You get a lot of these in the animated Disney movies, for familiarity. Think of "Part of Your World" from The Little Mermaid or "I Just Can't Wait To Be King" from The Lion King. It's that moment where the character outlines their hopes and dreams. Alexander Hamilton originally gave us his song in "My Shot," and music from that song has appeared in songs where he's working towards that goal. We most notable hear it in "Right Hand Man," "Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down," and "Non Stop."
    However, Howard Ho pointed out that we hear a slower version of the chords here in "The Room Where It Happens" when Burr starts singing about wanting to be in the room. Burr is arguably our deuteragonist, yet we haven't exactly been sure about what he wanted for most of the play. We didn't know what he was waiting for, and he honestly might not have known either. Now, after making the audience wait for half the song (and half the play), Burr has finally given us his "I Want" song, and the music corroborates his intentions.
    Truly a stroke of musical genius.
    Thank you again for your great reactions!

    This song/performance is why I watched Hamilton. We need to do a live Disney watch when you finish your reactions so we can be sure you see the insane dancing. Leslie's dancing in this is just amazing. At one point he's standing on a table covered by a cloth and he does this tiny hop and a guy pulls the sheet out. You know how much trust you need to have in that extra? It's probably the most dangerous stunt in the musical. Half a second off and you've hospitalized the antagonist/chorus (in the Greek sense wherein he soliliquies the play in many parts)

    • @qrowing

    There are actually NINE cities that have been considered capitals of the U.S.A. (some officially, some unofficially) before it was finally decided that Washington DC would be the permanent capital in 1800. There was Philadelphia, Baltimore, Lancaster (for one day), York (anyone who knows the War of the Roses might find those last two ironic since both of those were during the Revolutionary War), Princeton, Annapolis, Trenton, New York City, then finally Washington DC.

    New York City was the de facto capital at the time. There were several voices vying for Philadelphia and even Boston among others, but New York was the undisputed centre of power until Hamilton's compromise with Jefferson and Madison where NYC retained the financial institutions and they curved out the District of Columbia out of Virginia and Maryland in what appeared like a victory for the South. New York would've been like what London is for the UK or Paris for France if that hadn't happened.

    This was the first time the capital was designated in legislation. Before, the capital was designated on a session by session basis by Congress and moved between four cities or so. The capital could be moved again in theory by legislation, but it would be pretty radical to give up The While House, the Capitol, and the hundred other historical buildings and sites. Thanks for sharing the Vote video. I had never seen it.

    Edit: And yes, they essentially moved it from New York to DC. The land where the capital is now was donated by Virginia and Maryland. It had been in other places too, but once it moved to DC it stayed there. Back then there was just a lot of things to sort out while they built the new government.

    Depending on how you want to view it, the US had 2 "capitols" before Washington, DC. The first was in Philadelphia, during the Continental Congress & winning the Revolutionary war (1775-1783). Then, in 1784, the Continental Congress designated New York city as temporary capitol until an "official capitol" could be constructed near Philadelphia. George Washington's inauguration happened in New York in 1789. In 1790, the location of the future capitol changed to a site on the Potomac river (later named Washington, DC) after a compromise involving Alexander Hamilton. Construction started in 1793, finished in 1800. In the meantime, the Congress returned to Philadelphia. In 1800, the Congress began meeting in WA, DC.

    To answer your question: The U.S. capital was moved several times. At the time of Hamilton, the capital and the major banking and financial institutions in America were in New York City. The Southern states (in the play, represented primarily by Jefferson and Madison) wantedcthe capital in the South because they thought it would give the Southern states more power. Hamilton wanted a national bank and for the federal government to assume the state debts to make the unity as a country (as opposed to regional solidarity) stronger. A common, federal money, instead if each state having it's own money, was also a Hamilton goal. He didn't really care where the capital was because he saw the power of the country in a strong economy, not the location of the capital city. So, the meeting was used to give the Southerners who opposed his bank and financial system the capital in exchange for giving Hamilton a national bank, a federal money system, and keeping the financial structure of the country centered in New York. The art of the compromise...

    The Capital was Philadelphia, Pennsylvania then, in exchange for being allowed to set up a permanent banking system in NYC, Hamilton granted that the US Capitol could switch to the Potomac river (Maryland/ Virginia area) on land that was set aside as not part of any state. It is a Federal City, belonging and run by the Federal Government and holding no allegiance to any specific state. Hamilton was able to structure the banks, consolidate all the debts from each state into one debt which he distributed evenly among all the states (it didn't matter which had a larger or smaller debt before this, they each had an equal share to pay afterwards). Due to the wealth of the south, the north was able to pay of their debts quicker (due to giving some of it up to the south). This made the country, as a whole, able to have a competitive place in the international financial market, thus making a stronger country as a whole. If the debt had remained divided, it is questionable if any of the northern states would have survived long. Hamilton is pictured on the USD 10 dollar bill (the 10 dollar founding father, as listed in the very first song). Recall, Hamilton was basically self educated . . . and his financial system still operates throughout USA today. A genius. And this would never have happened if he hadn't gotten Madison to agree to his terms . . . in the Room Where It Happened.

    Philadelphia was the capital during the revolution. New York was where the government was meeting during Washington’s administration (so defacto capital). The constitution mandated the creation of a federal district to be the capital. The location of that was what they were deciding, ultimately going with a swampland along the Potomac River in what was Maryland and Virginia (about half and half).
    Theoretically you could establish a new federal district somewhere else, and if Congress, President, and the Supreme Court moved that would be the new capital. But in terms of land acquisition and building that’s nearly financially impossible.

  • @adityadhall4496
    @adityadhall4496 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The capital was in Philadelphia then New York then the designated the area in Virginia and Maryland as the Washington DC. They could move it, but unlikely. There is a chance the federal location will shrink just to be the capitol and white house and a few other portions. The rest of DC would then become its own state

  • @debranonya1388
    @debranonya1388 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    To answer your question about the capital there are several factors that make it moving now pretty unlikely
    A. The position of the capital no longer holds the same weight that it used to. Because of transportation being what it was then the location meant that where it was would determine who could be there more often and therefor vote more often and have more power. You have to remember most of these men were land owners and farmers who couldn’t just ALWAYS stay in the capital.
    And
    B. When they moved the capital they found a voting issue and decided that no one state should hold the capital because it essentially gave that state a double vote. So the established the area around the capital as the District of Columbia which is its own entity and now owned by or governed by any other state. In order to move it now states would have to give up land (un likely as this would change their votes in Congress) AND the people who are in DC now would have to be absorbed into another state (that would be a huge fight because DC has a large population and that would affect votes)
    So essentially it is unlikely to ever move again because there isn’t a reason to move it any more and it would be a giant argument/fight/headache

    The capitol was often bouncing around, and this deal Hamilton, Jefferson and Madison made set it almost permanently on the Potomac River. So not in Virginia,but also really close by. It could, technically, be moved again but proposing such would be such a radical idea and would need probably everyone in the country to agree in order to happen. This is also where we as a nation got the financial system we use today, and Wall Street, and the national bank, Hamilton did a lot in that respect.

    Oversimplified answer, but the "first" capital had been in a few places (Philadelphia, York, and New York City, to name a few) throughout the founding, Revolutionary War, and building of the new nation. Congress, being made up of members from all the colonies, all wanted the "new" capital to be in their respective states for obvious reasons. When the song says that they chose the Potomac, that's because Washington, D.C., is located on the Potomac River and is wedged between Virginia and Maryland and does not belong to any state. It is its own federal district. It is not likely it would ever move unless the city was attacked in an end-of-the-world scenario, and in that case, many think a new emergency capital would spring up somewhere in the western US (which wasn't even a part of the US when they chose the capital, as a reminder).

    New York City was one of the acting but not recognized capitol. Philadelphia was also one. The capitol can technically be moved but it cannot have power unto itself. The Constitution mandates it must be so big (6 or 10 sq miles? 60? I dont remember and don't remember the section but I might look it up later). Its caused a ton of issues actually because back then people especially in the "South" - and the District of Columbia is thr border to the South, sitting between Maryland and Virginia - didnt tend to crowd as much. Now Washington D.C is urbanized with a population of citizens that surpasses that of Whyoming and at least one other state, Rhode Island maybe? However, the capitol and the citizenry could break apart meaning the only people living in the capitol would be the presidential family and retinue and possibly some other staff. D.C. wants statehood and its own ability to self govern, currently a congressional committee has to get involved with EVERYTHING. The land, btw, is Maryland technically and was gifted in perpetuity. So some think Maryland should reclaim the populace. Some. Like no one that lives there does.
    I don't know that I'd call this side of Alexander scheming as much as a glimpse into how far ahead he was always looking. He, to use Lin's phrase, had no skin in the game when it came to where the capitol was. But he had Washington's ear and was very charming. Im sure he could whip cabinet votes easily. However, he was playing the long game as Treasurer. Getting national debt basically ensured our continued unitedness.
    Since you didn't combine this with Schuyler Defeated, you should also watch/listen to the extended cut version of that.

    Moving the Capitol isn’t a logistical issues. it is entirely a political issue. You would never get the Congress & Senate to agree, let alone the states if they have a voice in it. The Capitol is in Washington D.C. which does not have state status. So if the Capitol were moved, what would become of their status and the status of the state it moves to? It’s more complicated now than it was then and will probably never happen. The only way I see it moving is if there’s a civil war and the winning side decides to move it.

    The US government formed and was located in NYC in the 1700's, that negotiation was to move the Captal, meaning the government out of NYC to the District of Columbia, Washington DC, which is the permanent resident of the US government aka the capital. No, it can't be moved.
