      Do you know what she's allergic to? It might be grain, or additives, but could also be some type of meat. Some people do elimination diet, with just 1 animal meat for a while.. to see how the dog reacts to it. If the dog reacts to it, that type of animal gets eliminated from the menu. Usually chicken. Most dogs do well on lamb or turkey. Variety is always best, so keep changing animals untill you have a couple your dog reacts well too.. But if you're lucky, then your dog does well on all types of raw meat.

    Hats off to you on this info and what you say. I see so many people just get on and make dumb videos about home made dog food. Yours is the best so far I have seen so far and thanks I hope viewers fallow your advice because they need to understand veggies - greens should be around 10% - 15% of the diet. I am lucky I have access to beef tendons - unbleached scalded tripe along with liver and kidneys. You just need to add fibers greens and you can also get sardines in water for omega health to. Don't forget Blue berry's they need these as they are important for the anti oxidants portion of there diet also. Great video I loved it.

Unfortunately, only two of my six dogs are really interested in eating them. Can I put it all through a meat grinder? I want to use what I have. Everything I have heard in the mainstream thought processes is that raw bone is bad for my dog. Really, chicken back is ok and thigh and leg bone, OK, and beef rib bone OK. She is only 14 pounds. Please let me know what you know about bones for dogs. I am so happy to have found you!!

      @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Iris,
      Raw bones are an essential part of feeding your dog a raw diet. For small dogs you can use chicken wings, turkey necks or even rabbit bones as they are easy to get through for small dogs. Alternatively you can grind or blend the bones to make it easier if they have bad teeth.
      I have lots of videos on raw diets, check them out and you’ll be well on your way.
      Thanks for watching!

    • @MonsieurRaki

      Raw bones are ok, cooked bones are NOT ok to give. Everyone talks about bone splinters, but that happens with cooked bones. Obviously some vets sell kibble, so they try to scare people with that. Soft bones are ok to give (necks/wings/carcass of chicken/duck/poultry/rabits), bones from big animals are too hard. If you can find a raw meat supplier that has grinded meat mixes with bones, then it's ok to give that to your dog, so they can have variation in bones like lamb/sheep, goat, beef and game. Turkey neck is ok to give, other parts can be hard, depends on the size of the bird. Wings might be ok, but I don't give turkey carcass myself. Some young lamb necks are ok too, but necks from older lambs/sheep are too hard. They have to be very meaty too. Bones are essential for calcium and other nutrients. Dogs have died just eating muscle meats/organ meats and food scraps, they need the meaty bones! That's why some vets also are weary of raw food diets, because they've heard of dogs dying in the past. But those dogs didn't get bones. If you absolutely do not want to give bones, then there's grinded up meals with bones if you have access to those from a raw food supplier. Or there's bone meal powder. And you can grind up some bones yourself too. Or just give kibble or a vitamin mix or something. Just meats and veggies longterm is not the best option. I wouldn't give beef rib bone, that's usually way too hard. And for a 14 pound dog, just stick to poultry meaty bones. Little chicken necks if you can get them, or chicken wing/back/carcass

      That myth came from back in the 70s when people fed their dogs cooked table scraps. COOKED chicken bones, or any other cooked bones should not be fed to your dog. RAW bones are not the same and are fine for dogs to eat without any issues. If you are still concerned about it, you can always break up the raw bones using a blender as demonstrated in some of my other videos on raw diets. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

      A customized raw diet is ideal for dogs that have health issues in my opinion. It adds a degree of flexibility that no commercial food can offer.
      Raw diets contain no grains or fillers which can aggravate or even cause the issues your experiencing. Raw diets are high in natural water content which will help your dog flush their kidneys. Adding dehydrated cranberries will also help with preventing infections in the urine track.
      Picky eaters also love raw diets as it adds a lot of flavour and variety. Dehydrating the organs or blending them will help as well.
      Hope that helps!

    Thank you so much for this video. I have a couple of questions if that's okay..
    For context we have a 6 month old Golden Retriever puppy who we are looking to transition on to raw food.
    - I hear so much conflicting information about bones. Some people say that the dog can choke, some even say thay the bones can tear the digestive systems of dogs. They say that even fish bones can be dangerous. What is the truth about this? I was initially planning to use a grinder to avoid any choking hazards, but hearing you talk about the benefits of chewing was interesting. As you can imagine I am just terrified of hurting our pup!
    - I don't understand how to measure out the muscle meat vs bone ratios when the bones are included in chicken thighs. To do this, surely you must need to know what ratio of meat to bone the thigh itself has. Are all thighs equal? Surely wings have less meat to bone ratio? If the thighs had, for example a 60:40 ratio of meat to bone, wouldn't that mean that you would need to add extra chicken meat, for example a breast?
    - Our vets try to terrify us when we have brought up raw feeding, however it seems that they are brainwashed in to recommending certain kibble brands. One of the things that they brought up were vitamin supplements. I was surprised to see that you only added greens/fish/bone broth/egg/oil as supplements to the meal. Is it not necessary to add vitamins such as A, D, E, C, and K?
    Thank you so much again for your very informative video!!

      The myth about bones as choking hazards came from back in the day when people fed their dog table scraps. COOKED bones are brittle and sharp, but dogs are literally made to chew and eat RAW BONES.

      Thank you for your quick reply! I believe I have watched all or most of your raw diet videos and I am very interested in your one to one sessions which I may contact you about in the near future if that's okay!
      I do have one question that I am still confused about though if I may?
      In this video you say that the muscle meat ratio should be somewhere between 75%-80% and the bone ratio at 10%. I still don't quite understand how using chicken or turkey thighs follows this rule, that is, unless they naturally have the correct ratio of muscle meat to bone built in to them?

    • @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115
      @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jamesavery2647 the ratios are just a rough guide. Chicken legs and thighs with the back bone attached have about the right ratio. You don’t have to be overly precise. It’s not like baking.

    What's your take on buying Big Country Raw? They are canadian brand near Niagara ( sell 4lb packs 1lb 4 packs) either as dinner (meat, bone, organ, veg and fruit) or pure meat( meat, organ and bone) then you add the veg and fruit if you want to. They work out to around $16.99 for 4 lbs so $4 a 1lb. No mess, you just grab it out and away you go

      No mess, but quite expensive... It's cheaper to do it yourself, but if you're worried about the mess and you have the money, you can give those meals. I would however not just give grinded up meals every day of the week, as they need something to bite in, to clean their teeth. Just "mush" isn't very good for their teeth.

    Fabulous video, really helped me get my head around the BARF diet. I have a couple of questions for you:
    1 - When feeding a BARF diet to a puppy, who will need lots of 'training treats', how do I portion out treats as part of their daily food allowance.
    2 - When feeding your dog/puppy smaller amounts during the day, do you split it into a selection of all of the ingredients, ie, muscle, bone, organs etc, each time, or can you just give them small amounts during the day, and it doesn't matter what, as long as they get the whole selection?
    I will be getting a Golden Retriever puppy in a couple of months, so making sure I'm prepared and ahead of the game when he/she arrives.
    Thank you so much, from Melbourne, Australia!

      @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello from Canada Emma!
      1) If you are planning on treat training, you can use tiny pieces of dehydrated raw chicken. This will be part of the daily muscle meat portion. A little goes a long way. I recommend using treats very sparingly and substitute affection as a training tool.
      2) Once you have your total daily portion, you can feed it in any parts throughout the day. I often use the organ portion as treats for my dogs throughout the day and feed their muscle meat and bones for their main meals.
      3) It’s important to grind or use a blender for the bones till your puppy gets their adult teeth. You can check out my “does size really matter” video for more information on the consistency and size of the raw diet that will work for your dog.

      You can add the treats into the menu, but you can also just give them as 'extra'. Very small bites of (cooked) sausage, cheese or dog trainers, dried fish/meat treats from the pet store... whatever motivates your dog. Since they are just small bites, they don't get a whole lot extra. If you use clicker training, the dog gets several treats. But you only train for a short while with a young dog and other forms of reinforcement also help (good boy/girl, a hug or playing with a toy). And you also use interval reinforcements, so sometimes they get a treat and sometimes they don't. In the beginning you give a treat everytime, but they learn pretty quick, so then you can interval treat after that. Interval method is helpful, so they don't just do the trick for a treat and it motivates them if they don't get a treat everytime.
      About the raw food meals. You can give them portions of muscle meat, meaty bones and organ meats every day (spread out over different meals as a young pup), but you can also just make a week menu and divide the meats over several days. I gave my puppy several days of meaty bones with organ meats and several days with just muscle meat. Because organ meats are a laxative and bones can constipate, so I gave those 2 together. But when he was an adult, he could handle seperate organ days and seperate meaty bones days. It depends on the dog, how he reacts to it.

    Just wondering if the 2% guideline is appropriate for small puppies. I have a 1.5 lb Maltese and 1/2 oz of food per day seems low.

    • @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115
      @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 2% is for a healthy adult dog with no weight issues. It’s only a starting point. Puppies need much more. 3%-5% of body weight is a good place to start. Remember, these are just guidelines to start with. Every dog is different. Age, health, activity level, etc are all variables. Tailoring your dogs diet is very specific to you and your dog. Even kibble comes with a wide range in their guidelines.

    • @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115
      @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Carlos,
      The bone to meat ratio is based on weight. If using chicken, there’s no need to calculate fat content unless your dog has pancreatitis. Fat in a raw diet provides the energy that carbs do in kibble.
      Hope that helps.

    • @MonsieurRaki
      @MonsieurRaki 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use this method: chicken wings/legs is about 2/3 meat and 1/3 bones, necks is about 1/2 meat and 1/2 bones, carcass is about 1/3 meat and 2/3 bones. If you calculte how much bone your dog needs, then you can calculate how much meaty bones you need each week depending on the type of meaty bones you use.. And then you can subtract that from the percentage of muscle meat the dog needs. I usually make weekly menu's to calculate everything.
      About the fat. I wouldn't worry about that. If your dog is more active then give the dog more food or give them more fatty meats like lamb. If the dog gains weight easily, then give him less food or more leaner meats like chicken or turkey.

When I fed my dog kibble it cost me about 600 czk (around 29 USD) a month and now feeding raw costs me approx. 1100 czk (51 USD) for 2 months so it's definitely cheaper. And it isn't the cheapest I could get. It includes beef (meat, organs), rabbit (meat, bones), horse meat, lamb meat (+green tripes), salmon, sardines, chicken (organs, bones, meat), turkey (meat+bones), duck meat, game, pork (meat, organs) and quail meat. • @MonsieurRaki
      @MonsieurRaki 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I travel, I check grocery stores/butchers so I can buy meat. Or I check for a freezer, so I can bring my own meat. So an apartment/holiday home/bungalow resort type of vacation is a better option than a hotel room. Unless the hotel room has a freezer, but usually they don't or the freezers are very small. You can stack some fresh meat in the fridge, if they have one. And it's ok to give a can of fish or a liver sausage/pre-cooked sausage for a day or 2. I've also heard of people bringing dehydrated meats with them, or a dehydrated (raw) sausage or lightly steamed meal in a bag or can. That's ok for a couple of days. If it's a meal with a premix of vitamines, you can give that longer, but I prefer buying raw meat myself (it's cheaper). If you travel a lot in hotels with limited options, then raw feeding is not for you. You can't just give the dog kibble and then meat again. The dog gets used to a diet; if you switch up they can get diarrhea.

    Hey just curious about the raw fish with the bones intact. Are they able to eat any kind of fish or just some of them as I know a dog who had to undergo surgery coz of swallowing a raw fish don't know which one though. Thanks :)

      I recommend small fish, but if you research sled dogs in the arctic, they eat whole raw salmon. Dogs are pretty tough, but choose what works best for you and your dog.

    Hi, thanks for the vidieo. I want to follow your guide but with the beef you added large bones. My dog is missing 5 teeth and has has had restorative dental work done to save teeth with hairline fractures. I am afraid to have her chew any bones other than chicken wings. Any advice here??

      Hi Michael,
      Chicken feet are primarily bone, cartilage and fat, so they fall into the bone category.
      They make a great snack as well, like wings.

    a little too much i think, with a grinder you can mix chicken, beef, liver, kidneys, hearts and 20% in fruits and vegetables and dog wouldn't notice the difference though i do like that rib bone added

    Hey! Do you have any recommendations on starting a 7 yr old chihuahua, with tartar buildup on her teeth, on this diet?? Would appreciate any help. I never knew about BARF but everyone seems to recommend it for cleaner teeth!

    • @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115
      @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Amanda Persaud-Thomas id recommend having your dogs teeth cleaned, then you can start on BARF. Keep your dogs mouth size in mind when chopping up the meat and bones. If our dog doesn’t have good teeth you may need to grind or blend the bones. If their teeth are good the bones will keep them clean as they chew them.

    My dog weighs 60 pounds and needs to lose about 6 or more pounds so how much would she need to be fed?

    • @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115
      @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Katy,
      I would recommend starting with about 1lb of raw per day, cut out all the treats and most importantly, increase the amount of exercise to help your dog lose some weight. The weight should come off slowly, over time.
      Hope that helps.

    Thanks a lot! I appreciated your video so much! I have a question though... I've been always warned to cook chicken as it may be dangerous raw due to salmonella. Does this affect dogs? Thanks again!

    • @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115
      @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can certainly cook chicken for your dog, but it’s not necessary. You’ll loose quite a lot nutritional value by cooking, but it is an option. Just don’t cook the bones before feeding.

      There's a small chance of salmonella, but in general dogs can handle a lot more than humans. They can also get salmonella from kibble or anywhere else really. The chances are really small, so don't worry about it. Good hygiene and freezing helps with a lot of bugs.
      You can cook meat... but DON'T give your dog cooked bones. Raw bones are much softer, cooked bones can splinter. Also, don't give the dog just raw bones, it needs meat on it (meaty bones like chicken wings or legs). So don't cut off the meat and just give the bones.

    • @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115
      @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Michael, If your dogs are healthy adult dogs you can start with 2% of their body weight for a daily amount. For example, a 100lb adult dog would eat about 2lb of raw a day. You can use the recipes and proportions from this video. Wild hog organs are great to use.
      If you are unsure about how to make your own diet, you can simply purchase some that is premised to start with. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

      @@WeirdAmerica219 If you are concerned about pork you have many other options, but I regularly use pork kidneys without any issues. Just make sure you are practicing good food safety practices. No need to cook organs. It’s a raw diet after all.

    • @MonsieurRaki
      @MonsieurRaki 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hope you have been reading up on raw food diet. Only wild hogs is not enough variety, you need to give at least 4 animals each month and certain percentages of meaty bones/organ meat/muscle meat. Pork and hogs can get infected with Aujeszky Disease and dogs can get that from infected meat (humans can't get it). But if there's no outbreak of that, you can give raw pork. Or you can cook pork (only the muscle meat/organ meat, never give cooked bones). It will lose nutrients, but your dog can still get some nutrients in. And if you vary with other raw meats, it's ok

    Aren’t grapes toxic for dogs? Is grape seed oil alright?

    • @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115
      @thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Grape seed oil is a vegetable oil made from the seeds of grapes, not the grapes themselves. There are several other oils to choose from. Olive oil and coconut oil are my faves.

    • @MonsieurRaki
      @MonsieurRaki 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only large amounts of grapes are toxic, more than 2% of their body weight a day. For my border collie that would be 440 grams (15 ounces) of grapes a day. A grape every now and then or a bit of oil won't hurt them

    • @MonsieurRaki
      @MonsieurRaki 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A whole (small) fish can be considered a meal, but mostly you need to add other organ meat. I don't know if there's any seperate fish organ meat, but you have to be careful with fish. It can contain a lot of parasites, so always freeze the (organ) meat first.

      I don't know about Toronto, but maybe you can find a raw food forum/facebook group. They usually know raw food suppliers or they team up to order in bulk. You can also go to butchers or farmers/slaughterhouses if you're comfortable with that. Or farmer's market. There you can ask if they can give away some scraps or organ meats for cheap.
