      So saw a headline in enterprise they are working on ssd not being treated like hdds and being treated like how ssds are supposed to be used. Yes I read the article but it sounds like we have used ssds with the mentality of hdd and that has affected are ability to make better use of ssd. Si when will ssd consumer switch from being treated like hdd and be treated like actual ssds?

    There are so many good ZFS features, but you know what really sold me? Transitioning to TrueNAS Core on a brand new box and simply running "zpool import". No hassle, no hardware RAID controller to deal with. Just pop in the disks and run one command. The reliability is 100% worth the overhead.

    And it's so entertaining watching two guys so versed in storage just talking about cool stuff for an hour, really drives you to learn about stuff. Fantastic commentary on SSDs, hearing about the hidden pitfalls and black boxes helps assuage my irrational fears of them because I know almost nothing about what's happening on the inside.
    At the same time I'm pissed that we don't have a good industry standard way to peek into the workloads and queued jobs that sit inside an SSD.

    I love that it's two nerds talking about benchmarking and how you can make some systems do some very smart things OR some be very, very, very, very dumb, and how that makes a world of difference but requires people who are designing the system to KNOW what they're doing, and acknowledge the input of random people doing random stuff they didn't account for.

    Wendell: "multiple bits per atom. How is that even possible?!"

  • @gulllars4620
    @gulllars4620 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good discussion, and it touches on some important points that are also sort of pet peeves of mine. Benchmarking should do test to uncover and illustrate the speeds of the SLC cache, as well as how long it lasts, how it behaves when it runs out, and what the sustained write speed is. Maybe most consumers will never or rarely run into the scenario of running out of SLC cache for writing, but for those that have those kind of workloads, understanding the impact it has on the SSD is critical to buying the right SSD for your usecases. If you only ever do light benchmarking on an empty drive, you wouldn't give power users the necessary info they need to make an informed purchase decision. But it's also good to point out in the reviews that if all you're doing is web browsing, light office work, and streaming, then you'll never in practice run out of the cache and have the best case scenario performance (as long as you leave 20-25% free on the drive).
    Personally i've been formatting most of SSD at 90% of capacity for myself and the people i help with computers to avoid some of the performance pitfalls if it's not an MLC SSD. I guess we're at the point now where the "if it's not" can be changed to TLC with DRAM.

Therefore, it has complete knowledge of both the physical disks and volumes (including their condition and status, their logical arrangement into volumes, and also of all the files stored on them).

    @mrlithium69 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @30:00 Steam likely pre-allocates the writes instead of sparse allocation during the download, not to benefit the download itself, but to benefit performance when playing the game. So it knows for sure the large game assets are written sequentially adjacent to each other and not all randomly as the download comes in (plus mixed with other writes going on in your PC from other software during that possibly long and unknown download time). Then when you play, the game can load larger chunks for better loading times - (assuming the game doesnt just default to 4k random anyway like you said is common in the beginning)

    • @malventano
      @malventano 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a decent justification / theory, but I'd bet there is a negligible difference in load times vs. sparse allocation + download write pattern. Those download writes are going to lead to some wear leveling regardless of how you initially allocated the files (on an SSD), so pre-allocating shouldn't gain you anything besides unnecessarily burning through more write cycles of the NAND.
