Everyone knew each other, peaceful conversations and friendship. I used to smell the sausages cooking behind the counter while waiting for my food, mmmm. xD. Now it's just terror on the streets. whats nice is getting a playlist off spotify for, say, late night jazz, then overlaying it with the above loop. Makes you feel there in a live performance. All I now need is a white russian or a whisky sour.
i have noisy room mates i just put my headphones in and listen to stuff like this over the top of them and it drowns them out, really helps me concentrate.

A slightly noisy atmosphere (my favorite is water hitting the shore) can (a): relax people so that the under-stimulation isn't as big of an issue, and (b): provide the right amount of stimulation to match their level of antsy-ness. On a side note, I will never be able to focus in general as well as people who are able to focus fine in completely quiet scenarios.

After 12 years of this I must say I long for a little hustle/bustle activity of life around me, especially when I'm the only one home. So, a little lively background noise makes me feel active and stimulated rather than dulled by too much quiet. Sometimes, music is too distracting whereas this is perfect.

There are studies that show white noise like this can help boost productivity. I guess it depends on the person.
