  • The writer Ben Judah grew up in London, but he says it's changed so much in recent years he no longer knows whether he loves the city or fears it. His new book is called This is London: Life and Death in the World City. He made this film for Newsnight.
In a new book, he attempts to get beneath the surface of this new London, sleeping in subways and squatting in a dosshouse, getting to know some of the characters behind its huge anonymous population.
He made this film for Newsnight, with some of the many people he met along the way.

Let's face it. London is now a City state with no connection with the rest of the country. We need a separate English parliament !

This is so sadly different from the London I grew up in.
Neighbours knew each other, there was a sense of community. Children played freely in the streets. Divorce was there but unusual.
    Now London is a mess.
    People seem lost and disoriented.
I'm glad I left decades ago.

It is a price the UK population was prepared to pay, seduced by the prospect of "becoming rich". It is to do with the "off shore" elite acquiring wealth beyond belief. A friend lived in an area "considered" deprived or poor even, yet a a house on his road was put up for sale £600,000. It was sold within a month! Most of the people rented in the area and could not afford to buy even if they acquired a decent salary! London is one large building site every patch of land being built on. Any person who falls through the crack is just looked over, left behind like everywhere else. A friend of mine used to live in Hong Kong and he said it was the same there! People just "think, breathe money", they are without souls. London is now a global city viewed as place to make money or die trying? How did the mass of the English working people buy into this nightmare in the 80s/90s?

Where i live I feel like part of the minority. Schools, businesses, shops, and streets swamped with foreigners that don't even speak English. Schools turning local children away simply because there is not enough space for them due to an influx of foreign children, a nursery school place is like gold dust. Foreign children being placed first before local children. The nursery 5 doors down from me refused my child and I had to appeal the decision which I eventually won but not without a fight. All these advice centres and grants given towards supporting immigrats. What about local people? Every bank machine has a Romanian standing at it begging, one guy brings a fold out seat and sits all day, he can't even talk one word of English. The place is a dump, it is having a knock on affect and the locals are at the bottom of the list for everything. It is not fair not one bit.

You see what happens when the government allows millions of immigrants who are unskilled, uneducated , cannot speak fluent English; and will gladly seek employment opportunities for a wage that is lower than what the legal British citizens will except.
This type of immigration causes a “flood” of homeless immigrants many who will have problems seeking employment, and affordable housing.
Many of them have that “British dream” of becoming a wealthy person through hard work but nothing positive materializes over the years spent working hard; and never finding affordable housing.

    • @janetbrowning9089
      @janetbrowning9089 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes, because British citizens know how much it takes to survive...they can't live on these low wages that immigrants will accept. It's unfair to the UK citizens to allow this to happen. With the cost of housing & utilities now, even in Government subsidized housing, the utilities are more than the people can afford...they are having to choose between heating & eating...that's wrong on anyone's level of acceptance!!

Oh my lord , the amount of naive gullible people out there truly astounds me. It's so obvious it's embarrassing that the majority of people don't get that by bringing in all of these uneducated unskilled immigrants was always the plan to create chaos in the once powerful middle working class that was the back bone of the nation keeping all the greedy corrupt elite in order. And wow i don't even think the elite would have dreamed how easy it was going to be , when they purposely swamped the workforce with immigrants that were willing to work for half the price it immediately brought down wages and created a fight within the society they were trying to destroy and all of a sudden everybody was all about themselves and their own families taking their eyes of their true enemy the elite and it has been all down hill since then. It's time to wake up people and restore power to the people and arrest and jail all of the corrupt power players and politicians that have caused so much poverty and pain to so many innocent hard working people and families!.

London is a dynamic, constantly changing city. Believing or acting like it's a static entity is foolish.
The poor have always had it hard (whether it be in the times of Charles Dickens or the present day), but it was much harder in the 70s, 80s and 90s than it is today. There's plenty (millions) of educated, affluent migrants and minorities in London too.

InstrumentalsBeats....Wow you don't have a clue what you're talking about , do you have any sort of understanding about how far of you are with your thoughts??. London has been ruined from within by corrupt politicians turning a once great city into a multi cultural dangerous shit hole and a city that has literally turned against it's own people to create an even larger divide of rich and poor , and have pretty much successfully wiped out the middle class because their presence was an obstacle to the elite. London's 10 times worse than the 70's and so on , so i take it your perspective comes from an outsider looking in.

It is extraordinary those homeless people are lucky to be in your program ,I was homeless twice sleeping in parks and on the street of London ,now one even come and give me anything I ended up doing starvation as a British black man ,I do not know if I will ever get a job or be the same again ,being homeless is a nightmare ,yes I did what the all was talking about ,but as a British black man ,they ask me you should be rich and not homeless so some of those polish people use to say to me ,but the is for from the truth , I fight my way out of homelessness I live in a little studio flat , a lone with hardly any thing in it , nun stop looking for work ,my son live with my ex.wife in the UK she is from Brazil .and the other story ,yes I am sad ,grow up in the England as a British black man work in manufacturing in low pay job for years ,to end up with nothing ,at the age ,57 ,what is this about you have to ask your self ,as a black man ,yes the lie the dishonesty those Peter piper ,and the greedy racist and age discrimination and the gap between rich an poor ,truth fact is the the gap is too wide , and working in those conditions In some the jobs I did in my life ,for nothing .now people are speaking of multi-income just to survive at the same time the global reset setting of the economy, because Quantitative easing is not working anymore ,and the flick of the pen and there is money for the rich ,but not the poor ,never mind the future nightmare the is coming it be nice to earn enough money to live and pay your own way ,without going to government for top up ,you understand ,and renting is too high ,I rent places to live all my working life .as a British black man I use to pray every day when I was homeless ,till I when to a church to ask for help and they say now they cannot help ,I walk away back to the street ,but one day I was sleeping in the park ,I become a buddha monk so i started chanting ,and the how i got out of homelessness .respect to all homeless people ,i know your pain too i have being there too.🖤

@@GODAIM-ANDY One of those hoping for justice for private rental tenants is 53-year-old Askel Douglas, who last year was spending every penny of his £260 a week universal credit on a Neasden flat above a supermarket in London which flooded three times.
“I was totally ripped off by my private landlord," Askel, who has now moved, told The Sun Online.
"There was water coming out of the walls and ceilings so it was knee-deep and a total mess, and stinking, dirty water was coming up through the plug so I couldn’t even have a bath."
Askel says his flat became deluged with dirty water

Karma's law of Buddha is real. You will get of what you did. You judge yourself , no any God judge you. But most people still believe in God and waiting for God do everything for them but nothing happen , just an imaginary thing in their head.

As we know, there are millions of homeless people, starving around the world, the mayority of them, have mental illnesses, the administration of the goverments (including The Vatican, the richest one State all over the world) could ofer them a better life with dignity, but corruption rides as an Apocalipsis rider.Helsinki Finland,is a model to follow, the former homeless live in own houses, thanks to the goverment.Jesus is coming soon!.Shalom Ubrahá.
