- Survivability, Effectiveness, and Efficiency are some of the most important principles in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Incorporate these principles wherever you are in the jiu-jitsu journey for daily motivation in your training.
I'm currently focussing on survival. I'm four classes in, i'm hooked, I love it. This is a brilliant video. Thank you.
That’s where I am right now. My goal is to figure out how to pass the guard and not let people keep lifting my entire body off the ground.
Thanks Robin. I really needed to hear this. Thanks for the motivation. The gold is always found where the dragons are.

Yes! My goal is typically to not get submitted as fast as I did yesterday, last week, last month etc. I went into jiu jitsu with the mindset that I was going to be terrible, just completely green, never practiced any martial art of any kind in my life up until that point. I knew it was gonna be hard, taxing on my body, but I needed to stick with it. And I honestly think that helped me a lot, just going into it completely open minded. After all it's a marathon and not a sprint!
This is great. Too much internet BJJ stuff, which then goes on to influence real people in real gyms, is about how world champions train, and having a world champion mind set, and going one million per cent and never taking a backward step, etc, etc.
But most people who train BJJ are ill-served by a world champions mind set, unless they just want to have a brief love affair with it.
For a longer term love affair with Jiu jitsu, we need to hear more views like this one. Thank you for sharing
Thank you for the refreshing perspective, Professor. As someone the same age with many other obligations in life, this angle of viewing progress is exactly what I needed to hear.
Really heartening to listen to someone with this much experience talking about exactly the things I've been thinking about since I started learning BJJ in the past few months at 34 years of age. Balancing survival, technique and efficiency feels like a really great way to approach learning BJJ and it's definitely something I'll be keeping in mind as I learn more.
I’ve been training for two years know. My goal is to gain knowledge and stay in shape. I working on getting my blue belt. Enjoying it and learning how to survive. Good video.
Amazing and very humble video. Thank you
Im a white belt that started practicing about a month ago and i get submitted by everyone in the class. So needless to say i resonated with everything you said here. Thank you very much! I Feel inspired!
If I lived in Ohio, Id sign up with your team asap. I've learned so much from your channel and have applied a lot of it to my sessions in my gym. Thank you for all the solid content! Hi from Florida :D
Thank you!!! Excellent
Excellent mindset! Great video.
For me a reason why I want to reach to Black Belt is because I want to feel like I have achieved something in my life. When I got promoted to Blue Belt, even though I was so eager to get it, I felt that I was hungry for more in this game
