I appreciate that the SBF aren't saying this guy's an idiot for stopping partway through the first game, they're actually discussing the mechanics of the game and problems it has design wise and why going from Bayonetta to DMC1 makes it feel bad. I like that they're not just dismissing the question entirely and moving on, they're putting thought into how they construct their answer and actually answering the guy's question. Chalk up another reason these guys are my favorite channel.
I also think they just know this situation all to well, cause they've talked about it before about playing prequels before the first official game or Woolie not being able to climb just about anything outside of Breath of the Wild. BotW seems to have that effect on many people, jumping off of cliffs thinking they have a glider.
Meanwhile when someone said they didn't like Shadow of the Colossus because they felt the controls were bad and didn't age well best friends proceeded to call them an idiot and said they don't understand art
Yes, it’s great that they’re addressing his concerns in a mature and rational manner. Especially since most of his problems seems to stem from him just being really bad at the game.
Wild popping back to the practical-vs CGI effects debate after the Mandalorian showed that blending the two or using CG to spruce up a puppet or model is the objectively superior method.
It's so strange that Directors and the effects artists hadn't thought to do it before. Practical effects were all but mastered since "The Thing", and James Camerons Avatar, although non sensical in its geography, and story, was absoluteky stunnin to see. And still is for amazing over a decade later
$70 for the HD Collection? Who did he buy that from? Some kind of charismatic gypsy? When I got it, it was out for like a year and I got it for $15. He got played. And who stops at 1? That's ridiculous.
Praise the Beef not just that he stopped at one but the fact that he clearly had the other one and didn't at least pop in for a few secs yes I said 1 because dmc2 doesn't exist
I got it for $10 on ebay, no matter the quality of the game its a piece of history that shows progress. When I introduce my children to video games I want to show them the timeline to good shit instead of going straight to PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Children have so much tolerance for boring gameplay.
Is he really comparing an older first game vs bayonetta a much more detail and experienced team? I think bayonetta came out 7 or 8 years later after dmc 1. He should also play dmc3 and also go back to dmc 1 but understand it's much simpler because it's their first try at this type of a game.
I understand his feelings for dmc 1. I played the hd collection for the 1st time last year through ps now. Played dmc1 for about 10-20 min didn't like it felt bad. Then proceeded to play dmc 3 cuz i took the general consensus for 2 being shit lost to Cereberus a number of times and loved it. K Dash here's the thing alot of people don't understand if u played the original dmc3 Japan trolled us so hard cause the normal mode in dmc3 was hard mode idk why they did it but they did and when people caught on that's when special edition and hd came out to make normal and make amends for the past
Matthew Lugo Yea i knew that from a screwattack video years ago. The "US is too bitch mode" was still hard. The starting missions completely over after death was too much and a change for the better
Since they talk about going back to old games, my favourite game of all time is Metal Gear Solid 3, which came out when I was still unable to appreciate games on a deeper level. I didn't play it until the HD collection came out, and I still feel that if the game is good enough to stand on its own, the age won't matter. Which is why you usually only see like fifteen NES games get re-released all the time. Those are the ones that still hold up the most.
Hi, 7 months later, and if you are still there, I remember renting MGS3 when it came out (being a MASSIVE FAN of MGS1 and MGS2)... and I really didn't like MGS3 at the time. I felt that the games jungle setting was instantly dated at the time, and the 'jungle' was just a set of really tiny rooms that looked vaguely outdoorsish... because Metal Gear felt best when in urban environments (especially when Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon and Halo (all having 'better' jungles) existed between the gap between MGS2 and Snake Eater. HOWEVER... having finally played MGS3:Subsistence (aka the HD version that fixed the camera) a couple of years ago, I can NOW see why it is a classic (especially on harder difficulty). Metal Gear needed an entirely new camera system to realise the potential of its ambitions for outdoor environments.
Hi, 5 years later. See the news? Konami is promising to keep to Kojima's vision with Mgs3 just with alot of graphical improvements. Hopefully they get it right.

Dunno, but honestly, I do find flaws and faults with its characters and certain plot/narrative points. I'd hardly call it the best in the series, or even the best FF on PS1. That's not to say it sucks: the combat's some of the best in the series. But it has been legitimately hyped beyond acceptable levels by those whose first FF was 7, as well as the Cloud/Sephiroth fans who want to suck their dicks and see stupid shonen-style fights and conflict in a sci-fi/fantasy setting. Thanks so much for making this episode and the DmC play throughs so far, gents! Have been playing this series since ‘01 and tuning into you guys for about 6 months now, and loving your work! 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
DMC1 is 17 years old. There are tons of games that exist now that look and feel better. (Also early 2000s PS2 was basically the generation of trash camera). It's not a case of not being 'smart enough' to appreciate a good game, its not being able to tolerate the jank shit that was ironed out through improved hardware and years of working on the DMC formula. Also I remember DMC1 is outdated culture-wise now too, being the flavor of early 2000s Matrix-era tryhard edgelord culture (aka teenage white boys buying swords and overcoats). I can see people who are not familiar with that wondering "why is this game seriously trying to push this lame shit?". There's a lot of stuff in it that has gone from cool to comedic only thanks to age.
Devil May Cry 1 created a genre... that is why it is hailed as amazing...you can't compare bayo to DMC 1....it is barebones....DMC 3 set the bar and 4 mastered it....Bayonetta 1 and 2 are amazing game but DMC 4 is king of the genre...
im playing through DMC4 HD right now and im loving that it now makes me realize why I instantly fell in love with BLEACH......because I played it in video game form years prior since both Nero and Ichigo are protagonist's who voiced by Johnny Yong Bosh, wields a large sword that he often rests on his shoulder, has a very aloof distant personality when not in the midst of battle but becomes either cocky or very shouty during a conflict and both fight to save a loved one voiced by Stephanie Sheh that he doesn't fully commits to loving but more about protecting. see the similarities ^_^
He played the first level of the first game and gave up lol. I can get that he didn't understand that it started as a Resident Evil spinoff, but he seems too dumb to understand that old games are usually not as fast or smooth as modern action games. Like if its too old and clunky maybe try the third one since its the most recent of the three lol.
You shouldn't be forced to look up guides or LPs of a game to find it fun. If he didn't find it fun it doesn't mean he's stupid, it just means he bought the wrong game for himself. Just because he didn't like DMC1, do you think playing DMC2 would change his mind?
The stuff you can do with Vergil in 4SE is fucking insane and is hands down my favorite Character Action moveset so far. That being said I can totally understand someone hearing so many great things about a series and being disappointing by the first very outdated one. Although comparing a much older game to a newer one is just bleh not to mention he only tried 1 as the the best friends never talk about how godly 3 is.
DMC 3 is where the DMC series peaks (4 is excellent as well but its lack of budget is noticable). DMC 1 and 2 aren't great but 3 is absolutely amazing. Its a shame the guy didn't skip to 3 like I did when exploring the games since I will say that DMC3 is just as good as Bayo. The amount of things you can do in 3 is astounding and its worth playing.
The person was basically "Hi I played fallout 4 and it was fun and gameplay was fun, I played fallout 1 and its boring and slow" -person who don't know how to separate generation when the game come out
I actually like the dodging system in DMC outside of trickster style. I like Bayo's dodge, but it feels too loose maybe. I like how in dmc you have to choose between rolling or jumping depending on what attack is coming at you.
Ok I've only just started playing DMC 3 and from the small amount I've played I can see why people like it and I feel myself stating to like it too . That million stabs move with the lunge feels so satisfying. I also marked out super hard when I was just mashing out buttons to see what would come out and accidentally on purpose did that move where Dante rides a demon like a skateboard especially because I had just seen that in a cutscene a minute before and though there's no way I can do that in the game and low and behold I could. I just need to know however ; is there a way I can fix the fucking camera because it's so fucking slow. Oh and can I heal mid battle because I'm a baby and I'm getting my ass kicked pretty hard. If anyone wants to give me some secret teq that I don't know about that'd be appreciated also.
I believe there might be a camera sensitivity slider in the options menu, could be wrong though, and yes there is a way to use items during mid battle, they're assigned on one of the directional buttons along with a map and a movelist. Btw, from what I can gather from your comment you seem to have started with 3 which is good because if you did like me and went from 4 to 3, 3 starts to feel really restrictive really fast and it can ruin the early experience somewhat.
Thomas Rozhon ok thanks fam I'm not afraid to admit that the first boss really kicked my ass because I didn't know this lol. I was actually going to ask if I should buy 4 but I was unsure because I'm barely through 3 guess I know I should wait. Thanks for the clarification lol.
You can use healing items mid-battle, but if you do, your rank at the end of a level gets lower, so if you care about that, don't use items. Also, if you're having a hard time, try using trickster or Royal Guard styles. The former is for mobility, which gives you more options for dodging moves, and the latter lets you block and parry attacks.
ChillTerumi I think those other two styles are what I need tbh I kinda just dismissed them but knowing this now I’ll make sure to try them out. Thanks man :)
I always recommend people to start with 4 (since it’s kinda a new story from Nero’s perspective and would pretty much set you up for 5) and if they REALLY REALLY like the game then go back to the others. I hate to compare it to this due to memes but it’s the easiest comparison: if someone played Bloodborne and loved it and heard about the souls series I wouldn’t start them on Demon souls. I would start them on Dark Souls 3 or Dark Souls 1
Ah, so the Zaibatsu and I do have a point of agreement regarding TFA; anyone who complains about one of the few creative parts of that movie, the practical effects, is probably looking from a skewed point of view, at best.
I think the practical effects were fine from a special effects standpoint, but there's literally nothing in TFA that stood out to me. Every new alien and creature was just a bland, brown-skinned, long-faced, squinty-eyed, grey-haired boring design. Hardly a classic SW alien in sight. The fact that they decided to use practical effects makes purely CG characters like the tentacle monsters and the orange not-yoda all the more jarring, because these obviously fake things stand out even more because of it.
As another comment said, the Best Friends handled this very well, and with a degree of politeness and empathetic understanding that I'm not able to muster right now. Speaking as someone who bought the HD Collection and went back to DMC1 after this email, I'm pretty sure the whole series (besides 2) holds up. It really sounds like this letter does not understand the character action genre in the first place, lacks creativity when exploring game mechanics, and just wants a vibe match with Bayonetta 1 - which DMC3 might have given them, had they bothered to try it. Getting to the point they said they quit at takes like 45 minutes. Every flaw they accused the gameplay of is partially true, but also proveably wrong. I don't think this is a person who is long for this genre, unless another game in the ensuing years has shaken their misunderstandings out.
I played DMC 1 as an 9-10 year old, and I loved the game, the gothic style and the stylish combat even then enamored me. I still own my original PS2 and it still works, I just wish I still had the same copy, but I couldn't appreciate it as a kid and sold a majority of my games to get a ton of dbz titles, but atleast I still have an original copy of budokai tenkaichi 3. And 2 copies of budokai 3.
I was waiting for the guy to mention something specific about DMC1 and sure enough he mentioned puppets and I started to laugh. Mate, you paid that much for a game collection and didn't even try them all? Luckily the guys were nice enough not to call you an idiot, because you kind of are. Having said that, I hope you get the chance to play DMC3 or 4, maybe you can understand all the hype then.
I had a similar experience to this guy, I was having trouble getting into 1 and when i looked up if I could just skip to 2 I heard that was even worse so I ended up taking a break and never got back to it. Will try again someday but will probably start at three
i bought like all the released RE games released back in 2015, skipped the first 3 because it was too much for me, the controls and it was specially baffling back them because i had just finished MGS1, and equally old game but that plays much better
The best friends: Man you have to have the context in order to apretiated. Also the best friends: We refuse to respect Persona 1 and 2. I mean the context matters..when you know the game in question. Glad they tell that it was compresible the impresion that guy came across, with a game that it has almost 20 years
TO BE FAIR, Devil May Cry doesn’t become fun until you know EVERYTHING, and the game starts throwing everything. Devil Hunter mode in DMC5 even is boring as hell the whole way through, enemies are easy to plow through, they often die before you can do anything cool, and it doesnt feel like you have all of your tools. But once I hit DMD i started having way more fun, having to use everything I know to avoid dying and to keep my style rating up, and its a rush. I went back to Devil May Cry 3 and i feel it exactly the same. I know it’ll be more fun on harder difficulties, so I’m genuinely just playing it for the story as of right now.
I like that they aren't insulting the guy like the comments here, I think a part of that is they've talked about this before how you should never play a series in chronological order if the timeline mixed around and how user friendliness makes older games and not being able to climb outside of Breath of the Wild.
Joel Rodriguez Honestly I think you totally can because it should be common sense to tone down your expectations the older the game you play. It's like expecting Star Wars original trilogy and expect it to look as good as episode IX.(in videogame case this extends to contents mechanics and so on).I'm not even a DMC fan but sounds like this guy thought he was just going to play Bayonetta with a male protagonist.
They mentioned nothing of the pressure sensitivity of the PS2 controller & pulling off combos in DMC1. This is depressing the button to perform one action & releasing to perform another.
I mean if his experience with the series is playing that one and finding zero enjoyment in it to the point of hating it, why would he even bother with 2 and 3? If you couldn't stand MGS1, would you then jump to 2?
Because generally speaking it’s pretty widely accepted that DMC1 is the jankiest one, with jumping that will barely ever work and camera angles that will make you sick of trying any directionally sensitive move. Even I had a rough time with 1 but I accepted it early on because the big difference being I knew what I was getting myself into, it’s severely dated with mechanics that you don’t see around anymore with modern games, the Resident Evil style of keys to doors that’s so heavily used can get annoying and the water sections can make certain people sick. Plus going into something so much older with the mindset of wanting something more like Bayonetta is simply unreasonable.
Plus speaking purely objectively, he’s not smart to buy 3 different games and pass every other one off after playing the first one. It’s not sensible from a purchase standpoint whatsoever.
BlargleWargle why would you not start with the game that gets the hype? Who plays resident evil 3 and wonders “how the fuck would anyone like resident evil 4? This franchise sucks. “
wait people try ff7 and think these cutscenes look bad I hate it? No shit the game came out years ago. Only ff game I ever played was 10 and a friend told me to give 7 a try recently. And I have to say I always thought this game seems overrated but its earned its praise. There are things in the game I hate that were limitations of the time such as some of the puzzles or interactable overworld actions such as cracking the safe for the key to vincent or when you're climbing the midgard plate and you have to jump on that swinging rope. But damn. That game knows how to get you into it I love the interactions between the party and I recently got to the date night at good saucer and the aerith's dialogue tugs at my heart strings. I'm amazed a game from the 90s makes me feel such things and it hypes me up for when I eventually play the remake 10 years later
Huh I find that funny I had the opposite reaction with DMC & Bayo I got the HD Collection because of a friend who liked the series and played all the games after that up till now I got Bayo when it was free on xbone and I couldn't play it I hate the controls and found it went to far up its own ass with its story and sadly haven't touched it even though I want to like it
8:04 I'm one of those "Why doesn't my gun do damage because bang bang gun" people, probably because DMC2 was my entry into the series and it had really powerful guns, then DMC3's Gunslinger style felt pretty redundant because why would you pick anything other than Swordmaster in a hack n slash game? (granted, Trickster is useful as well). But yes, I do understand the "context of the time" thing the Zaibatsu are putting forward. Those games paved the way for something greater.
This is like bitching that the music, game play, and graphics in Pokemon Blue suck compared to Pokemon Ultra Moon. No shit. That game is 25 years. Why would you expect an old game that people who grew up with it and have a nostalgic love for it, would be comparable to the capabilities of a modern game. Or that it should in the first place. No offense to this kid, but that's not very bright. Might as well complain The Creature from the Black Lagoon isn't as scary as the newer It.
Dear best friends:why you like metal gear solid 1 so much? I like metal gear rising better.so I sold this game signed by the cover with the name of some guy called kojima. It was gift of my father too bad for him.I expect your aswer.see ya!!
I can't disagree non the devil may cries besides devil may cry 2 has moved me silghty passed " well that's something ". Because you can let a helicopter drop on dante. And you use arius to grind For points. Dante final boss is just broken becuase of range and that was the only cool boss that i wanted to play as. and the only one that is upset that they aren't putting in qts because i want to watch dante fuck up i don't think he looks cool for a mysterious ass hole to his only relative.and not keeping his living weaponry and not explain why he doesn't have it for the next game . dmc 1-2 is no excuse. dmc 3 and 4 could have gave a solid reason on why he doesn't have those weapons besides feeling that i got from dmc 3 is he gets annoyed by his talking weapons so just throws them away
But fuck ever going back to play dmc 1-4. Why even bother trying to combo off enemies if you can barely dodge them. If they couldn't improve the combat they could atleast improved the enemies in stead of re-hashing same enemies.tthey shouldn't have gave the player the option to go back all the way to the start.they could have atleast explain what you had do with nero grab
Nah, we're just wondering why people like you send in such retarded questions. "This 2001 game isn't as good as this 2011 game! Waaaah, I wasted $70 dollars!" Like, where the fuck do have to pay $70 for an old as hd collection. Shits 30 tops in my local game stop lol
This is the worst bait I have ever seen. The Emojis make it obvious and the fact that you added the white hair comment when that isn't relevant anymore confirms it. At least try when doing it, my dood.
I honestly can kinda relate a bit to this because this is how I feel in regards to Morrowind. I started playing Elder Scrolls thanks to Oblivion and Skyrim and I wanted to check out Morrowind since I always heard it get a lot of high praise, with some people even going so far as to call that game "deeper and more immersive than Oblivion and Skyrim." I bought it on Steam while it was on sale and immediately one thing that made me go "oof..." was the fact your starting walk and run speed is WAY slower than it is in the two later games. I even played a little bit of Daggerfall for comparison's sake since that game is freeware and hell you even move faster in Daggerfall, so yeah unfortunately Morrowind gave off a rough first impression because yeah I'm sorry but I can't stand games where your movement speed is just that slow, and from what I could tell it doesn't get much faster through leveling. I then tried out combat and doing some questing and yeah unfortunately I just had a hard time seeing why this game got so much praise from some older Elder Scrolls fans (combat in particular just doesn't feel very impactful to me), leading me to conclude "I guess, unfortunately, I really needed to have played this when it was new to appreciate it, because seriously I'd rather be playing Oblivion or Skyrim over this." Unlike the person who sent that email though I still have Morrowind on my Steam account and I'm hoping maybe one day I can give it a better shot, but those few hours I tried to get into it just left me feeling like "I want so much to like this but I just don't see what other people see in this game."
I appreciate that the SBF aren't saying this guy's an idiot for stopping partway through the first game, they're actually discussing the mechanics of the game and problems it has design wise and why going from Bayonetta to DMC1 makes it feel bad. Too nobody else in the comments reacted the same way.

A moron, apparently.
Terry R. I would hope so, because that $70 amount is outrageous.
Doing this is like going from Bloodborne to Demon's souls. Of course the newer one is going to be improved.
Subjective
except bloodborne is really weirdly designed and paced. its a game that not at all designed around RPG elements but it has them anyway.
Im so glad I can appreciate older media since I grew up with older consoles, I didn't own modern consoles til I could work
Did Pat just Crazy Talked DMC V?

This is interesting, 'cause while I'm not really a DMC fan, I totally got why people love it from day 1
The "spider on fire" is like the first boss. He didn't even get past the beginning of the game.

I would definitely play the reboot before DMC1 or 4. That game is WAY more enjoyable.
@@Sora744 I could maybe understand 1, but not 4. The reboot is just way too easy and mindless, except fit the stupidity of coloured enemies.
I wonder if that FF7 pull is a direct jab at Rich Evans.
Dunno, but honestly, I do find flaws and faults with its characters and certain plot/narrative points. I'd hardly call it the best in the series, or even the best FF on PS1. I guess the whole videos point is that it's a timepiece game, you can't go from bloodborne to demon souls and expect the same game
It really a damn shame DMC 1 got tore up like that and the guy was dumb enough to not do enough research by watching a LP or something.

So this guy played less than a third of a three game collection before just giving up and selling it? Man, you played yourself dood.
and also doesn't seem to have done any research at all on the games, forming expectations on word of mouth alone.
It sounds like he only played the first three missions, too
No, he played up until the first boss of the first game of a franchise. In any other game series, we'd call that a demo.
If only 4 got a special edition where they could have added some extra levels.
DMC1 still has the best setting and aesthetic to me.
The person was basically
"Hi I played fallout 4 and it was fun and gameplay was fun, I played fallout 1 and its boring and slow"
-person who don't know how to separate generation when the game come out
DMC 1 is prolly my favorite game of all time- and MK 1 Goro has NEVER looked better. (4 pectoral version from Shaolin Monks 2nd)
I actually like the dodging system in DMC outside of trickster style.
I like Bayo's dodge, but it feels too loose maybe. I like how in dmc you have to choose between rolling or jumping depending on what attack is coming at you.
My favorite Character Action game is Kingdom Hearts
It's fixed, you can't freely control it in most situations
Does this video include Dante from the Devil May Cry series?
I can appreciate parasite eve 1 and 2 even though I was born in 1998, dude those games are fucking awesome
18:54 what pisses me off is that the movie then proceeded to crash, and they did not learn from that. Like at all
14:21 notice how mat is silent in this entire conversation..
i wonder why...
Wait, when's Devil May Cry lets plays? We went through all Resident Evil lets play and its all gone
Any person that can go back and watch Gunbuster and enjoy it and tell me why its awesome is a friend of mine.
Don’t do what that guy did.
"I bought 3 games, played only 1 of them, and then sold my copy" what a great start
Wow this guy was way off base lol
Beautiful example of taking a completely moronic question and turning it into a fruitful discussion
I'm very fortunate I played DMC1 first.
Podcast on MY TH-cam? How dar U?!
Tldr next time actually try all of the games on a collection before quitting.
That's like having a cup and moving back to drinking out of broken egg shells. Ya can't appreciate it.
yeah hes right dmc 1 isnt the best but its god tier compared to 2
and i like 2
I'm a huge weirdo in that I love dmc1, but can't get into 3. Different strokes and all that.
12:12 my sister
they shouldnt have even bothered answering this
he only played 1, his opinion means nothing until he plays 3-4.
They mentioned nothing of the pressure sensitivity of the PS2 controller & pulling off combos in DMC1. This is depressing the button to perform one action & releasing to perform another.
Wait Devil May Cry is a resident evil spin-off?
not really a spinoff, but it did come from one of the scrapped concepts for re4. and kamiya was one of the big dudes behind re2.
>Buys 3 games
>Only plays 1 and writes it off
Doesn’t seem like a fault with the game now does it.
Those games paved the way for something greater.
in dmc3, for me it was Trickester, literally completed the game 100% with Dante before trying other styles, because dodging is too good to not have
This is like bitching that the music, game play, and graphics in Pokemon Blue suck compared to Pokemon Ultra Moon.
😞
he still relevant?
no
Honestly this guys view is perfectly understandable
Dear best friends:why you like metal gear solid 1 so much? I like metal gear rising better.so I sold this game signed by the cover with the name of some guy called kojima. It was gift of my father too bad for him.I expect your aswer.see ya!!
Everyone getting so tilted just because some random guy on the internet personally didnt enjoy a janky game action game from 2001.
no it was because he was too dumb, so obviously dumb.
I dont understand why people like the relic so much
its a pos
Nice bait, son.
Are you alright?
I enjoy ocarina of time's combat more than dmc1, these guys are biased, dmc1 sucked even at the time.
you sound like the guys today that after GOW2018 try to pretend that the original GOW trilogy didn't had a good story
@@ricardomiles2957 I do not agree with the comment I made 4 years ago. Dmc1 is awesome. Also yes god of war story has always been good.
Lol
Devil May Cry white hair Dante fanboys are mad aka triggered! 😂😈😎
Ishmael get mad fanboy.
This is the worst bait I have ever seen. The Emojis make it obvious and the fact that you added the white hair comment when that isn't relevant anymore confirms it.
At least try when doing it, my dood.
*Devil Triggered
If you're gonna bait, at least be a masterbaiter.
Lmao. I'm straight up stealing Devil Triggered, that's gold.
I then tried out combat and doing some questing and yeah unfortunately I just had a hard time seeing why this game got so much praise from some older Elder Scrolls fans (combat in particular just doesn't feel very impactful to me), leading me to conclude "I guess, unfortunately, I really needed to have played this when it was new to appreciate it, because seriously I'd rather be playing Oblivion or Skyrim over this."
Unlike the person who sent that email though I still have Morrowind on my Steam account and I'm hoping maybe one day I can give it a better shot, but those few hours I tried to get into it just left me feeling like "I want so much to like this but I just don't see what other people see in this game."
