It is not that it didn't work. They wanted it to be perfect from the start and were unwilling to learn and adapt. I think that was the main problem. The public was very critical also. Concrete carbonation was found to be responsible for the decline of oxygen and fixed for the second mission. Unfortunately, the group managing the project fell apart, ending the whole project. Now we know that plants are grown more efficiently in "indoor" gardening systems like the one in CHAPEA or hydroponic systems (like the one shown close to the end of the video). If they had not closed that project, we might have learned more. But that is why NASA wants to go to the Moon first. It is closer, and we can send supplies faster, at least until we figure out every little detail
