Started my boys on the little Honda. Great family past time. They learn so fast. Now they are on bigger 2 strokes. Dirt biking is something they will never forget.
i had a crf 50 from age age 4-7 maybe then a pw 80 which I loved so much and never wanted to get rid of from age 7-11 then a crf 100 from age 11-14 and I currently have a 150 at age 15, I was always a shorter kid so these bikes where always perfect for me, ride on🤟🏻
My 1982 Z50R was my second bike after my first home made bike with a 5hp Briggs & Stratton! Mechanically speaking they are still almost the same bike as they are today. I was only stranded once and needed to walk the "Walk of Shame" back to the farm when I got dust in the points. Man I wish I still had mine for my kids now. My neighbor's 1977 Z50A is still in his family complete with a farmer welded connecting rod and stove bolt in the top of the piston where a hole melted thru. The term "Bullet Proof" doesn't even justify these little powerplants.
Totally agree. Ive raced all sorts of bikes for over 30 years and just started my 7 year old daughter on a crf50. They are simply a great kids bike. All round you just cant beat the Honda.
My 3 boys all started on an XR50 went to a PW80. CRf80 and YZ85 on to an old XR200.We still have them all and they run as good as new.Great video as always.
They are great! I started on 1995 XR50, then moved to 1997 XR70, and then 1999 KX60 two-stroke with clutch. It was a great progression! Way to start em young! Nothing is more fun than dirtbikes haha. It teaches so many great vehicular skills that can be used forever.
Nice! I'm 16 and my first and only bike is a 50cc baja, Still runs like a champ and we have had it for over 8 years! Dose every thing I need it to from Hill climbing to messing around in the fields. I would look to get a bigger bike but still having to much fun on this little bike.
my 125 was $150. If you're gonna say bulletproof my 125 sat for 1.5yrs in rain, storms etc and only recently I put some fuel in it. 2 try's it started and yes I have ripped that thing on every corner jump and straights. Bulletproof! FULL MANUAL THAT IS WHY IT STILL WORKS.
Just bought my little man a 2018 crf50 today. My first bike was a 1978 z50 minitrail .Nothing compares to a Honda 50.They are the benchmark in beginner bike for sure. All the others just don't have the reliability or resale.$2200cdn out the door . Nice vid
Here is how I progressed by age. Bike: jr50(5-7),pw80(7-10),xr100(10-14),yz250f(14-18),250exc(present). Atv: trx70(4-8),lt80(8-14). By far my favorite when I was younger was the pw80 and lt80. If you ever consider getting your eldest an atv, the Suzuki LT80 is awesome! The suspension is a bit stiff, but it is fast. It is an fully automatic transmission.
+Johnathan Yinger +1 on the LT80. My dad bought this for me, rode it from about 4 to 7. Then sold it to my friend who rode it for years, then sold it to my cousin who still owns it. Amazing little quad
***** I still have my 1988 lt80. The only problems with them are the front brake, oil injection, and frame bushings. If the frame wobbles back and forth, you are done and need a new frame. Other than that, they are indestructible!
I bought YCF Start 88 to my 9 year old son about 3 month ago and I think it's even better than Honda or Yamaha. Price is little bit cheaper, it have disc brakes in both ends, it have kick start, quality is good. I recommend to check it out allso.
I bought a 2012 CRF50F for $150 3 days ago. Guy was in the military and was transferring duty stations. He was going to throw it away. I asked him if it runs and he said they were first owner and daughter only rode it less than 10 mins. Never rode it after that. It’s now 02/11/2020 and it runs great!
I had a 04 70 Honda when I was 7. I'm 15 now and I still love that bike to this day. It was reliable and super easy to start. I raced it against 50 2 strokes and won
These are amazing learners bikes! I got a Z50 which is very similar, just older. Still have the bike to this day and would reccommend it to anyone with kids learning!
I have been trying to find a little dirt bike for my kid and almost every video has real live grown men riding these little kid bikes, I wonder if these guys know that they make full size bikes for men, well real men anyway. I'm glad to see a real channel where they know what size bikes for the right size person. A man being a real dad and not taking the bike for themselves. Cool channel.
I as an adult TOTALLY enjoy riding my 95 z50r like every day, and will be picking up a crf50 for myself/ friends. These hondas last forever, and unlike the pw50s and jr50s, they hold value because they are awesome.
Oh boy the memories are roiling like u tube in my head. 1980 z50r. My first bike. I was the coolest kid in town with a brand new z50. What an amazing Lil bike. I burnt 5 gallons a week on that Lil bike. Recently I got a crf70 for my daughter. Best part of the 70 is I rode it all the time it's so fun. Adults love these Lil bikes to play on. Me n Tj Mcgee use to do BIG GUY MINI TRAIL DAY. Get all your buddies together n do a trail ride. What a riot... everyone was wearing a smile the whole day. ON THE SEVENTH DAY.. GOD MADE THE HONDA 50
We just picked one up for our 2 yr old and I learned so much from your video. Thank you for sharing your experience and putting together a thoughtful explanation!
Thanks for this great review. Picking up one tomorrow for my kid and i was a bit worried that it may be too much for him but i feel confident that it will be the right bike for him after hearing you talk about it.
If you have a semi-auto and the battery is dead, you can keep the shift lever up to get to second, push the bike and drop the shifter. Been doing this alot with my old atv and ct70😎
bought one of these for my son for Christmas...can't wait to see him ride it on Christmas day. Got a great deal on a 2015 new left over model. He is correct some used ones were almost the same price so went with new.
My little brother is learning on a Honda mr50 Elsinore right now i think kids need to learn with a clutch so it seems more natural and they don't get frustrated when they are older
Wish my family was into dirtbiking when I was younger. I would've LOVED something like this when I was little. Guess i just had to find the sport myself.
+vevohoeyo no way a pw50 is more reliable than a honda 50. Nothing is as reliable as a honda 50. Always has been since 1968 when honda brought it to the u.s. Just saying
This video helped a lot, just picked up two, but now in 22, paid about $2625 each out the door but this video gave me the confidence in my purchase thank you! New sub
Yamaha pw 50 correction. 2 stroke fully automatic no gears. Left side kick start. Unchanged since 81. All parts interchange. Great Lil bike also for really small kids.
This video is super well done. All the information you need to know as a parent; nothing you don't. Thanks and I'll be picking one up soon on the used market.
I’ve had a 2011 crf 50 for 5 years now I beat the crap out of it and I’m teaching my girlfriend how to ride on it! I’ve got the big handlebar kit and it’s perfect for grown ups to have fun on!
I bought my boy a kawasaki kdx50 on craigslist for 500 bucks. its the best 50 in my opinion, its a 2 stroke with a kick starter and a rear brake and front brake in the correct positions as the big bikes. it also sits lower than the Honda and pw50 and you can adjust it as your kid gets bigger. Suzuki made the exact same 50 except in yellow. unfortunately kawi and Suzuki stopped making them a few years ago so you gotta look for them.
Thank you very much for that great review, buddy, I really appreciate that. It helped me a lot to find out if I'm on the right path choosing an CRF50F over a PW50 or QR50. I'm from Germany looking for a CRF50F for my 4 year old son at the moment. I started myself when I was 6 years old on a modified Honda Monkey, so it is still the same reliable bulletproof engine like in the 70s. Only downside like you already mentioned is the weight in comparison to the twostrokers, but I really love these little fourstrokers for their moderate sound and easy maintenance. Keep on riding & thumbs up for that vid!
Just picked one of these up for my boy. Fantastic little bike. Honda really make a nice machine. Considering a lot of these little 50s are kinda cheap and cheerful. Honda built something that can last and handed down for fricken 4 generations haha.
The CRF50F is a good little bike for bigger/older kids. As are the Yamaha offerings. However younger smaller kids and those just starting out could benefit greatly from an electric bike like an Oset. They are lighter than the internal combustion options. They do not have a hot header that may burn beginners. The battery packs will often outlast the kid. Also, the trials models offer real low standover heights. These bikes have widely adjustable speed and torque settings. These benefits allow me to start my 3.5 year old out safely without training wheels.
Dude. I know you posted this ages ago but I just want to thank you for a great, honest, down to earth video. Really helpful. Moving to Uganda shortly and have just picked up a CRF50 for my 5 year old thanks to this advice. Your other video on the KTM 50/65SX bikes also helped. Just too high strung for a first bike and also not ideal for the beginner trail riding that we intend to do. And like you said, if they are really into it, in a few years they can bump up to an SX but these Hondas make total sense as the starting point.
+Dirt Bike Channel the 110 is a nice bike, i was looking for this one when browsing the ads, and found the 70 used but like new. (you can see my son Marc driving it on my chanel!) those are easier to ride than the small 50 when they grow up, larger wheels is much easier, all my crf's are 2008, they dont look outdated compare to the new ones! same great design. By the way, the kickstart on the 70 is smooter than on my 50.
I’m in Los Angeles area and just got quoted $2,700 OTD and they are asking $1,599 MSRP. Used ones are ranging from 900 for an early 2000s up to $1,300 for a 2015 in pretty good condition. Probably will spend the $1,300 as the other options are much older and more worn. Wish I could get it $1700 OTD!
Another great video Kyle! My 5 year old boy watched right along with me. Then my 7 year old daughter sat down to see what we were doing. The deal I have with my wife is no dirtbike for the kids until they can ride a bike without training wheels. My daughter is all set. It's my son. He is great on a balance bike but he has no interest in pedaling one with training wheels. I'm hoping your video motivates him!
+John Kokocinski John, look into this little electric bike for your son. It's about $230 on amazon and can be a great segway into this CRF50. My kids loved it. www.razor.com/products/dirt/MX350/
+John Kokocinski John, I want to hear your thoughts on the Beta when you get some seat time. Drop me a line at kyle@dirtbikechannel.com once you have some time to compile your thoughts on the bike. Lots of guys seem to really love that bike. I'm going to have to try one soon.
+John Kokocinski And by the way, don't even use the training wheels with your son. I think they do more harm than good. The balance bike or Stryder bike is all he needs. He can learn the concept of pedaling on a tricycle if needed. Don't put training wheels on a bike. That is counter productive in my opinion. I'll get off my soap box now :)
I would add Oset electric trials bikes ,my son had a good introduction on the Oset due to the linear power and no noise it was very easy to acclimatise him in the basics the power can also be very easily modulated .A few negatives would be the battery life and the weight ,and the cheap brakes and suspension ..Everything can be upgrades but its expensive but as a first bike they are easy to learn on and good re-sale prices..
Good Video but I still think the pw 50 is a better buy. It is lighter and does have a kick start on it. My kids grew up riding them and now my grandson is riding one. He is five and he is able to pick it up on his own but not kick start on his own yet. The pw 50 is a narrower bike than the Honda. The pw50 does have a throttle control screw as well. Here on the east coast ( Florida) Pw 50 used can be bought for about $600.00. Love the videos and man your landscaping there in the background is amazing!
I had a ttr50. That thing is light. Yeah it has electric start and if the battery dies it won't start. But those are easy to push. When I was selling it, we had no battery and it was very easy to push.
Hi Kyle, great to see a family guy out with his kids, my lad only started riding at 13 on a KTM 85 big wheel, then a KTM 125exc, now he's 16 he rides a KTM 250exc and he's way faster than me! Future single track with your kids😀 hey get your misses riding as well:)
+stanley gardiner Thanks Stanley. I hope to be able to ride with them for many years to come. I can't get my wife to ride. She likes the 4 wheeler though...
Nice post. I grew up on a Honda 50, it had fold-up handle bars so ya could put in the trunk or on the back of your car. Makes me want to go out and get one for my grand-child, dang you DBC:)
I'm 16 and rode one for shits and giggles being 5ft 9in and 200 pounds it still hulled ass after 20 min of getting comfortable with a bike that small it was surprisingly easy to ride for my size at first shifting was hell because of my size 12 foot with steal toes on and the bike being so small but I got the hang of it and got up to 35-40 on flat ground on it
Agree on the cost vs KTM. Especially when they may grow out of them after just a few years. The KTM does have a shock and disc brakes but when you kids are learning none of that really matters.
I'm 13 and I still have my crf50 and technically it's my dad's but he wants to sell it but I want to buy it off of him. It has so much sentimental value I cant let it go
I love these little Honda bikes. I grew up on a 2001 XR70R, still like to causally ride that thing around my house every once in awhile. Neighbors give me weird looks though, probably thinking whats he doin with that piece of crap when he got his 250 haha. Great video!
I'm 14 and just started riding this summer my first bike was a Baja dirt runner 90 and so far it's been good never had any problems except when I was doing doughnuts with it and popped the tire at the stem where you fill it with air
+Dirt Bike Channel Hey there. I love your channel! I have a question. I am 18 years old. 74kg and 1.93m tall. What bike should I start on? How much cc is recommended for me? thanks alot!
+Ruben Bernecker If you are looking for a reliable bike that won't take off on you I would get a ttr230, crf250x(Not the R, MASSIVE DIFFERENCE) or the crf230f. All good bikes to learn on and as long as you are not racing them they are reliable.
I had the 50 when i was 5 and transferd to an 80crf when i was 7 but I am quit tall was ridding my dads old 200xr since I was 9 and got a ktm 250 xcw 2stroke when I turned 13
PW 50 but it's for like a 4 year old so at that age there not kicking nothing over but that Honda makes a great 2nd bike everybody I know started on a PW it's Yamaha's best selling bike I still see them from the 80's
Started my boys on the little Honda. Great family past time. They learn so fast. Now they are on bigger 2 strokes. Dirt biking is something they will never forget.
Its weird being jealous in hindsight...I had to wait until I was 36 to start riding dirt bikes!
And its crazy adorable lol...
+Zedro nurinburg I know how you feel.
I’m 31 and about to get my first CRF50. Never rode before 🤣
@@WuWizards how was it
@@jadelajouz2996 It was awesome! Sold it cause I'm a basket case. Wish I kept it! lol

That little 50cc 4-stroke sound brings back memories! I learned to ride on a '03 XR 50... they are great bikes!
+Tdog01250 Yes, they are. I think it brings memories for a lot of guys!
Xr 100 here 👍
They are great! I started on 1995 XR50, then moved to 1997 XR70, and then 1999 KX60 two-stroke with clutch. It was a great progression! Way to start em young! Nothing is more fun than dirtbikes haha. It teaches so many great vehicular skills that can be used forever.

Honda should pay you for this video! Lol. Talk about a perfect run through of this machine. 👏👏

+HKM _ Yeah, they are great.
+Dirt Bike Channel no offense but there kinda a rip off Im seeing RM 80 for 750
You are right HKM
just bought 2020 model . nearly cheaper than what they are on the second hand market . great little bikes.
I have a 2003 xr 50, I have had it for ever and I ride it still lol. It will not die!
thank you I just bought one In good shape for 200 I was gone keep but now think I'm going to sell
Value of these bikes is certainly location based.
Yeah but there the same here I just happen to get lucky
Was my first bike, fantastic little thing and completely bulletproof
+grant mcdonald Great place to start, for sure.
glad I saw the Honda crf 50, I'm leaning that way for my 6 and 8 year old.
Hi sweetie I am good
Thanks 😊
🎓🤩My name is Benjamin what’s your name
1999-2003 they were xr50 , name and plastic change in 2004 then they are preety much the same up untill now, great little bike
+Ryan s True story.
I got a Z50R in 2nd grade, Im 18 now and Im 6 foot 2 inch and i still ride it everyday
Thanks for making this vid. You sold me on going with the CRF50 for my 2 kids.
Yea I agree I started on a little 50 but then went straight up to a 250... I now ride a KDX200 2 stroke 😀
Will do! Thank you. Picking up my new to me bike a next week. Beta 300rr race edition edition with only 220 miles. I'm stoked to say the least.
+John Kokocinski John, I want to hear your thoughts on the Beta when you get some seat time. Drop me a line at kyle@dirtbikechannel.com once you have some time to compile your thoughts on the bike. Lots of guys seem to really love that bike. I'm going to have to try one soon.
+Dirt Bike Channel will do!
My soon to be 6 year old has been asking for one and i think I'm gonna go with this bike thanks to this video (:
Honda 50s are great bikes and resale values are amazing
Love the videos and man your landscaping there in the background is amazing!
that's awesome you are teaching your kids to ride instead of playing video games all day.
I had a ttr50. That thing is light. Yeah it has electric start and if the battery dies it won't start. But those are easy to push. When I was selling it, we had no battery and it was very easy to push.
It's been basically the same motor in these little bikes since 1967. They are bullet proof!
I learned on a cr500 when i was two years old
Mitchell Windsheimer I believe you not
was being sarcastic bud
Same
Mitchell Windsheimer z bull shat
Your lying at 2 now 5 i could possibly belive
Just orderd one 2022 for my 5 year old daughter👍👍
Where can I buy them from?
Hi Kyle, great to see a family guy out with his kids, my lad only started riding at 13 on a KTM 85 big wheel, then a KTM 125exc, now he's 16 he rides a KTM 250exc and he's way faster than me!
Future single track with your kids😀 hey get your misses riding as well:)
+stanley gardiner Thanks Stanley. I hope to be able to ride with them for many years to come. I can't get my wife to ride. She likes the 4 wheeler though...
got one for $500 with an Yoshimura Exhaust and an 88cc kit already installed it's also an '09
Pw 50's have kickstarts in fact they are a 2 stroke 50
Nice post. I grew up on a Honda 50, it had fold-up handle bars so ya could put in the trunk or on the back of your car. Makes me want to go out and get one for my grand-child, dang you DBC:)
+Gregor Miller I do what I can :)
I'm 16 and rode one for shits and giggles being 5ft 9in and 200 pounds it still hulled ass after 20 min of getting comfortable with a bike that small it was surprisingly easy to ride for my size at first shifting was hell because of my size 12 foot with steal toes on and the bike being so small but I got the hang of it and got up to 35-40 on flat ground on it
These are great little bikes to learn on would recommend these 100%
+Alex Charlton They are fantastic.
Agree on the cost vs KTM. Especially when they may grow out of them after just a few years. The KTM does have a shock and disc brakes but when you kids are learning none of that really matters.
+mobgma True story.
I learned how to dirt bike over my cousins crf 50. I loved it haha
Gotta be Utah. Beautiful. Thanks for the informative/thorough review. I'll likely be picking one up for my boys...and daddy when nobody's watching. :)
great video as always God bless you and your family. Honda for ever bro.
Awesome review! My sons only 8 months so I have a few years to go, but that gives me plenty of time to find a bike.
Hey Kyle Btw you actually can roll start the ttr50 just put it in third gear and start Rolling and it will engage and roll start. :)
I use mine and I’m 16 and almost 6 feet tall. It works for grownups too
Just picked up an 09 crf50 for $800, perfectly fine
I'm 13 and I still have my crf50 and technically it's my dad's but he wants to sell it but I want to buy it off of him. It has so much sentimental value I cant let it go
great video, I wanted to get my 6 year old son into riding and needed advice - perfect timing for your video! Thanks
+Andy Boyd Glad that I could help.
I love these little Honda bikes. I grew up on a 2001 XR70R, still like to causally ride that thing around my house every once in awhile. Neighbors give me weird looks though, probably thinking whats he doin with that piece of crap when he got his 250 haha. Great video!
+Alex Rinn I hear you. I ride the 50 in my neighborhood regularly.
I'm 14 and just started riding this summer my first bike was a Baja dirt runner 90 and so far it's been good never had any problems except when I was doing doughnuts with it and popped the tire at the stem where you fill it with air
+andrew jeanveau Those dang flat tires can take the fun out of things!
Dirt Bike Channel yea I had to bring it to a shop to fix it cuz the bead was so strong me or my dad could not get it of
+Dirt Bike Channel
Hey there.
+Ruben Bernecker yeah, at Honda CRF 250X would be a great bike to start on. That would be my suggestion. Either at or a Yamaha WR250.
Just picked up a mint 06 crf50f for $575. All it needs is carb cleaned since owner never rode it just kept it in his garage.
Dang I just bought an 06 for $375. Since I never grew up with bikes I thought that was a little high. Glad to know I got a good deal.
I had the 50 when i was 5 and transferd to an 80crf when i was 7 but I am quit tall was ridding my dads old 200xr since I was 9 and got a ktm 250 xcw 2stroke when I turned 13
I wanna begin to ride a dirt bike and they look really cool I’m a beginner
PW 50 but it's for like a 4 year old so at that age there not kicking nothing over but that Honda makes a great 2nd bike everybody I know started on a PW it's Yamaha's best selling bike I still see them from the 80's
