    This makes me think about the important (but fluid and personally definable) differences between “tasks” and “goals”. I’m in the Common Planner, too, and in looking at Goals section last week, I started thinking about what my goals are versus what are tasks that need to be accomplished apart from or as part of those goals. Your ‘everyday things I need to do to live’ category is what I’d consider to be “Tasks” in a planner, while I’m choosing to define “Goals” as something more big-picture. (Ex: Lose XX Pounds might be a goal, while Log Steps Daily might be a task.) That being said, I wish there were two such sections in the planner, one for a “Goals” overview (work goals, health goals, etc.) and another one for a “Tasks” overview (wash kitchen sink, wash windows, when to put in new water filters, etc.). Since the latter isn’t actually in the Common Planner, I’ve created a separate B6 notebook for tracking those kinds of tasks, as well as lists, ideas, daily routines, etc. It’s into that notebook that I’d actually put the rough work you did on scrap paper since I’ve come to realize that the rough work is something I want to keep given that it documents important things such as how I think, how I grew, how I got from A to B, and so on. I think we absolutely need to embrace the work, DO the work, and then document the work since that’s where our personal and intellectual development lies. Planners shouldn’t be about being pretty (as fun as that can be) but about helping us in some way(s); that being said, it’s often the work behind the final product that matters the most. Thanks for this video and for bringing up some key points while celebrating the importance of drafting, re-doing, reflecting, scrapping, revising, editing, re-starting - things that are becoming more and more scarce but that are invaluable. And sorry for the long comment but the topic got me inspired!

    • @RachelleinTheory
      @RachelleinTheory  ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Andrea I LOVE the long comment. You make a really good point about documenting the work, and how it helps us see how we can grow. If documenting it all in its own notebook works for you, I say more power to you! And I totally see what you mean about Tasks vs Goals. In my system (can't remember if I lay this out in the video) but I use the green pen to document the goals and the red pen to document the actions I need to take. But this is helping me think about where I am keeping track of the day to day things that need to get done. Thank you for commenting and watching

      @@RachelleinTheory Thanks for the reassurance re. the comment length! 😅 Glad that we’re both still mulling - I really do think you hit on some great topics worth delving into more since they raise interesting questions about habits, planners, notebooks, the creative process, personal discovery and growth…all things that I love, that you probably do, too, and that likely are of interest to your audience and this community as well. Interesting that you colour-coded; it wasn’t mentioned in the video but it now gives another layer to consider adding to our own systems. I love a community of learning and sharing, and I hope that you throwing your process out there gives others lots of food for thought as well. 👏🏻🙌🏻👍🏻📚

    By far the best thing I've ever heard in regards to goal planning: what do I need to do to function as a human being? I ALWAYS have such lofty goals and ambitions, but I ALWAYS underestimate the time and energy that I will need to invest in them, and I ALWAYS get discouraged and abandon keeping track of them, which of course leads to a severe lack of progress. This has really given me a LOT to think about, and I'm getting excited about goal planning again!

    I never realized I was struggling with anxiety to set and write down my goals for 2023 until this video. For the past month, I was inspired by other videos to start thinking about my goals but that's all I've done- think about them. This video made me realize that I am afraid/anxious to write them down. I will try to..no, I will write them out on a draft paper with pencil. I don't have to have everything figured out. They don' t have to be clear, concise, and specific on my draft. Just start by putting them down on paper! Thank you Rachelle!

    “Anxiety wants you to set things up so that you can fail at them, so you can be more anxious” 💡💡 that explains A LOT! I haven’t understood that I have anxiety until lately, but this makes so much sense! No wonder I always fail at any goal I set, or make sure I can’t reach them 😅. I’m not setting up goals this year, I’m gonna set up “wants” instead. Goals has become so negatively loaded for me 😅 so trying a new approach this year. I like your method of using different styles to find your priorities! Definitely gonna use that!

    LOVED this whole process!!! I feel like I set the same exact goals every year and I wonder why I never accomplish any of them 😭 Maybe this will help!
    1. The dream goals if you had infinite time
    2. Rating your life, finding out your priorities
    3. The reality of your life, what you have to do to function, how much time you are already using
    4. What can you actually use in your free time, what dream goals can you fit in and how much of it

Whenever I’m planning I write a bunch of stuff on post-it notes just to get it off my brain then I rearrange them and group similar ones together. If I find I’m repeating some or find a lot of them are grouped together then I realize I’m more excited or passionate about one thing

    It was great to see a really well thought out and described version of what I do. I set “intentions” in the new year , and commit to my “goals”only around Chinese New Year i.e. a few weeks into the year. This helps me because I still have the buzz to start something new along with everyone else,but also to put things into practice before I make a strong commitment to myself .. I started doing this because it aligns better with my work calendar..but even after switching jobs, I’m planning to continue the ritual

    I was revisiting this video and had an ah hah moment. I created the grid on a separate paper like you did, but I changed the Goal in the top left to Identity and wrote my rows as affirmations of those identities.
    Ex: instead of declutter the home, I instead wrote “My home is a clean temple.” In other words, a clean home is a vote for temple it can be for me. 😁

    This was actually very helpful...I have such a hard time finding a system that will work for me. The challenging part for me though, I could still write the things I want to accomplish, do and reestablish back into my life and it will still look like gibberish. It's breaking them down into daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly tasks/goals and how often I need to do those things can also be frustrating and time consuming.

    Wow... this was great. I am exactly like this with goals. I overdo it and then don't succeed and then give up and feel like I did nothing during the year. I think I'm going to just pick one this year. If I get it to where I want it, I'll pick another one. But I do have so much other stuff to just live and take care of my family that I don't have even close to the extra time to do everything I want all at once. Thank you you for this perspective. I never realized how much my anxiety plays into the goal setting process.

    Rachelle, you've been reading my mind these days! I've been putting off goal setting for the new year for a while now, but I really like this approach, so I think I'll be giving it a try. Everything always feels so permanent when I put it down into a pretty new planner!
    I think my biggest tip so far has been to embrace flexibility with goals - sometimes life will happen and you'll have to reevaluate and adjust your goals based on what will work for you. Last year, my personal goals were all thrown out of the window after a parent was diagnosed with a serious illness and I became my household's sole breadwinner. I'm happy to be back in a place where I can focus on myself and health again for 2023, but I'll be gentle with myself if I need to change things up!

    Flylady shared the idea of using page protectors and handwritten routines tucked into them and dry erase markers to check off what has been accomplished. Easy to wipe off each day (or week, etc.) , only one piece of paper 'sacrificed' if you make a major change to the list. Eventually, you can create pretty pages that are truly customized to you, to the season of year or the season of life that you are in.

Ironically, one of my main health goals this year is to address my ongoing anxiety head on as it's taking a toll on my body. Starting early enough to be able to give myself time to let things percolate has helped a lot. Also, lowering my expectations for my own energy and decreasing the number of hours in the day when I am goal-focused. Planning with “ideal me” in mind is a recipe for failure. If I do more than planned, nifty. But I no longer want to feel behind 2 weeks in.

    • @RachelleinTheory
      @RachelleinTheory  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "I no longer want to feel behind 2 weeks in"... HARD SAME. At work, my team and I figure out how many hours we have in the week for priorities and then cut that in half and plan around that. It's always a good idea to give yourself LOTS of space.

    I save scratch paper for this sort of thing. Backs of junk mail, things I'll shred later, bad print-outs. Punch holes, store them in binders and in drawers so that paper is always available. No sense wasting money/new paper for dafts of initial goals, sketches of ideas. Using a computer to quickly typing and editing is also helpful, including printing projects and their strategies and tasks, especially things that have to be sequential. This helps because I'm a highly visual learner. Helps me break things down and figure out where actions go in a planning system.

    Hi Rachel. This video, which I'm watching 5 months after the fact, is SOOOO helpful. I've always had trouble with goal setting, even not knowing what to set as goals. Years ago, I watched the movie Backdraft. It made a lasting impression on me in that it's the first time I saw something as not human as an actual character in the drama. That was FIRE. When you were talking about anxiety, I began to look at it as a separate entity and character. Sometimes you have to see things from the outside before you know what you need to do to handle it. I have been anxious about this year too. There are so many things just happening at certain times - my daughter’s graduation, college prep for two kids, a big trip to Japan, etc. What I’ve been having to face is how can I fit in things like a book release and be a part of the groups I’ve been a part of for writing events, too. What can I handle without feeling raw, broken, and burnt out. So you’ve kicked me in the rear to start drafting a more realistic time for my book release and a what I can handle in my writing groups. This video is so great! Thinking of when will one fit all those tasks (corresponding to each goal) during our daily lives is so important, and I don't know any system out there that clearly state that. So, you nailed it! thank you so much for sharing! :)

    Very good video. Concentrating on what will truly make you happy and not setting yourself up for failure by expecting yourself to do too much. I made plans for myself last year and a new list for this year. However, I plan to redo the list quarterly this year and assess what is working and what isn't. Plus, things change and in a few months, you might need to concentrate on something else.

    I really loved your goal setting breakdown! I’ve looked at and tried many different methods but I always got so overwhelmed and eventually I thought I was deficient somehow in “not being able to do it like X”. I also have bouts of anxiety and recently discovered (embraced) that I have ADHD and am finding new ways to work with my brain that will keep me on track but also aid my personal growth. This method seems very promising! Thank you for your wonderful share!

    I took your advice and did these steps. The most helpful part for me was doing the exercise where I rated my satisfaction of the 8 parts of the wheel of life. And it made it very clear what I need to focus on next year. I was able to narrow down my goals into 3 main focus and came up with actionable steps to accomplish them. This is much more doable than tracking the 10 goals I had before.
    Thanks for sharing your process!

    Something I try to keep in mind when I goal set is that the goals are an ideal, they are what we would like to get out of the coming year but sometimes things happen. They can be big world wide things (as we all learned in 2020) but sometimes it’s something small. If you suffer from depression holding yourself to the standard you would if you were in a mentally stable isn’t productive or good for yourself. We should all strive for our goals but not meeting a goal doesn’t mean failure because whether you meet a goal or not you’ve grown from who you were before. Remember kindness towards yourself is just as important as being ambitious and productive.
    I hope everyone has a wonderful 2023 I’m rooting for all of you!

And that's because I don't have enough time to accomplish the one hundred goals I settled when I'm on holidays. This was so very helpful! Thank you so much. I’ve been drafting my goals on scrap paper as well (same pen to paper anxiety) and still haven’t added them to my 2023 planner. I’m going to do some research and testing to fine tune further. I think that’s been part of the hold up on finalizing them.
    They might get added by February. But I’m ok with that! 😂

    Thank you, from the bottom of my anxious heart, soul and mind, for this video! It popped up on my home page and I just wanted to let you know how helpful all of your tips have been! Well- I’ve just finished watching the vid but I wrote down like, 2 pages of notes hahah, so after I finish my weekly spreads for December and my reflexions on 2022, I’m definitely using this method to set my goals for the upcoming year. I seriously cannot thank you enough! And on another note, I was wondering if you’d mind if I translated my notes into Spanish to share them on my socials (with the proper credit of course!!!). It’s just that most of my followers don’t understand English quite as well, so please let me know! Once again, thank you, and have a great 2023! ✨

    I’m trying quarterly goals this year. Most of my “goals” seem to be more of a huge “To Do” list from all the procrastination I’ve done since “The Vid” entered our lives. All of the other long-term goals are set up as individual habit trackers that I will evaluate/change monthly.
