  • So one of my big goals for 2022 is to write a pilot script, and after taking this MasterClass, I feel even more confident that I'll be able to achieve that this year! Shonda Rhimes is an INCREDIBLE teacher and the 5-part case study, breaking down the pilot of Scandal, makes this my favorite MasterClass to date. (And shout out to ‪@AuthorJCCarpenter‬ for asking me to take this class with her!! I cannot thank her enough for this push.)
☟↓ QUESTIONS FOR YOU BELOOOOOW! ↓☟
    D I S C U S S I O N Q U E S T I O N S :
Are you also a Shonda Rhimes fan? If you love Scandal or Grey's, what particularly stands out to you about those shows that you love? (She's also the Showrunner for Bridgerton and was for HTGAWM, so I'd also love your perspective on those too, if you're obsessed.) The whole breakdown of writer vs. Showrunner (or writer AND Showrunner) is something I learned during this MasterClass bahaha.
Do you prefer TV or movies?
Have you ever attempted to write a pilot script or screenplay??

Don't forget to check out JC's channel and her video (linked in the description!!). We'll also have a livestream on her channel TOMORROW (May 5th) to discuss more about the lessons we learned.
🎥 Let me know if you're also dabbling in writing a screenplay or script for the first time this year!

Hi Loryn! No novels yet. You can find a short story I wrote in Cam Wolfe's horror anthology WE'RE NOT HOME and I've published some novellas and short stories under my romance pen name. Hoping to start querying agents late this year or early next! :)

I get the intent behind 'write everyday' but it always bugs me because...I don't. And I've been a full time professional writer (comics and these days, television) for over a decade and written professionally part time since the nineties and I've never been a write everyday person. I think for a lot of people who can't write every day, telling they have to just makes them not write.
I think you need more writing days than not, which I think is a lot more manageable for a fair few folks.

Yeah! I think that's a very fair perspective. I don't write every day either and definitely still call myself a writer. Maybe I just enjoy hearing ~controversial~ takes, which I think the "write every day" has become bahaha.
Her comment actually reminded me of some famous comedians that say you need to be writing jokes every day. As with everything, what works for some people doesn't work for others!

Ughhh I hate this advice so much. I’ve found that I write more on writing days if I skip some days. And short snatches of writing don’t do me any good. It takes me at least a half hour to get warmed up. 4 hours in two days is way more productive for me than the same amount of time spread over a week. That said, ‘some words most days’ is something I try to stick to. And I dropped the “aspiring” a while back.

You should totally make Meridian Maps into a show. I would watch the heck out of that. Also cannot wait to be able to read your work one day!!

Great video on Shonda's class! You will be HOOKED once you write your first pilot. So much fun! I highly recommend the book "Writing for Emotional Impact" by Karl Iglesias for some screenwriting gems (that also intersect novel-writing). So valuable. Another FANTASTIC Masterclass is Aaron Sorkin's!

Jennifer Laughran said a few months ago the best education you can give yourself is to read 100 books in your genre that were published in the last 3-5 years and take notes! I’ve been doing this with middle grade, but I wonder if doing it with tv show pilots is possible?

Thank you for this video, Kate! I learned so much simply watching you watch it, so I appreciate the condensed version lol 😂 I personally like movies (and mini series) better than television shows because there’s a very clear beginning, middle, and end. The only drawback with movies is that you don’t get as much time with the characters! Which is a plus of a tv show, but then yo usually get sick of watching it after the second season. That’s why a mini-series is a perfect balance! 😊

Great video! I will let you and Becca write the scripts. :D Go, go, go! I can very easily see you getting a tv contract or whatever they call it. Your enthusiasm will get you where you're going.

I'd have to say lately I enjoy movies more than shows, if only because movies have a guaranteed finish. I've been burned too many times before of starting say, A Netflix show and it getting cancelled on a cliff hangar. I still do like shows but now I sort of gravitate to shows that have wrapped up or else have like a book I can read if it all goes south.

I think you should write every day as a beginner to see how your brain works.
I tried this in the new year and within a month, I worked out how I actually write. Write 4 days at most but I need days in between to let the story sit and/or to find out what it is I actually am doing with the story. I only write every day to re-write. But that first draft needs breaks in-between.

I watched all of the shows and my favorite so far is Inventing Anna. I feel that Shonda, wither as a writer or producers, makes great short shows.
I feel that How to Get Away With Murder was a strong show if it had only 1 season, for example. I feel the shows tend to get lost as seasons progress, but I guess is the fault of the medium (in which shows never know if they will get picked up for another season).
Overall, I tend to enjoy more shows that are short (1 season or mini series) or shows that plan the seasons since the begining, like Dark or Orphan Black. Since the show runners know how it will end, the detours seem less jarring in comparision to other shows.

I once tried to write the beginning chapter of my first novel I was attempting as a screenplay, I think. But I was also in early high school so I don't think it went that well, lol. And as far as preferring TV or movies...it's hard to choose because they're so different? I mean movies can be part of a series but they're normally not as...continuous as a TV show might. As in, TV shows might have more threads to tie up than a movie does because they have the opportunity to do so.

I love her Netflix show How To Get Away With Murder. Its one of those shows that's a little over the top but each episode my jaw drops open and I think, this is the absolute bottom. There can be no worse. But of course, there is. Very addicting. Also Bridgerton Season 1.

I watched a pilot of a new show recently and at first i couldn't figure out why it wasn't grabbing me only after did I figure it out set up and pay off was way off as they were moving way too fast, skipping over a big chunk of time with major plot and character development potential to then try and stick what should be two separate arches in one. This leads to a lot of telling or seemingly out of nowhere dramatic statements and characters that I don't like very much

Thanks for sharing. I would be as excited as you or more if I had this course. I think I missed the black Friday sale for it .
Did you get a year of master class or her course separate? I wanted to finish a script this year too . The past few years actually. I just started re writing one I started in 2020 .
I'm an author who has never finished a screenplay but always wanted to write a film and sitcom etc.
I have a book I want to read on writing sitcoms or pilots. I forget the name it's on my Kindle.
I've been watching alot of shoes this week and my writings has been flowing for a few days. I would love to be In a writers room. I love scandal but at first I didn't felt like too much going on at once and I had a headache but then I got addicted to it lol . Also had a get away with murder show of hers and others

Are masterclasses worth it? They look fantastic but also kind of too good to be true? Is it knowledge that anyone with a vague interest in the topic can say on any matter?

It's not a live action show but GI Joe Renegades literally ends its opening two-parter with murdering one of the main characters (theres some spoilers past that but basically) who was IN THE OPENING CREDITS. The following episode took him out and replaced him with two supporting characters in the opening. I still think that was ballsy as hell, even for a children's cartoon.
