1.Look at the table of contents
    2.Look at the key arguments
3.Write down in the margin certain notes
    4.Circle hard vocabulary words
5.Summarize the chapter in 2 to 3 sentences
    6.Put the book away
    7.Come back a week later
8.Go back to the end of every chapter
9.Go back to look where you underlined, circled, etc
10.Write down the 3 main points
11.Go to where you underlined and write down 3 big ideas

You forgot the most important part.
Set aside a block of time to consistently read. He said he wakes up at 5 AM every day to read for two hours

      1. Determine what the book/video is about
      2. Determine the key arguments.
      3. Determine the evidence for the key arguments
      4. Summarize the section(s) in your own words with 2-3 sentences.
      5. put the book/video away for 1 week.
      6. Go back to the summary after 1 week, read the summaries and read the evidence.
      next level:
      7. Write down what the book is about and the 3 main points
      8. write down 3 big ideas from the evidence.

I just spent two hours watching every single book summary and memorization video. This is the only one that brings something new and valuable to the table. I can stop my search and start reading. You deserve more views!

Then u should use sticky notes instead. That's what i do .

    • @jonathandavenport2500
      @jonathandavenport2500 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I used to be hesitant and not do so, but partway through college I started with textbooks, then started with some biographies and history books for a class which felt more like a novel, and eventually I also started doing so in regular books. It got easier. Although sometimes I still don't because I like them looking nice and clean.

Wow, Paul, your method of comprehending and remembering books is a game-changer! 📚 I've always struggled with retention after reading, but your six-step method (plus the bonus steps) seems like the perfect solution. I particularly love the idea of writing down three main points and three big ideas after reading - it's like creating a mini 'cheat sheet' for each book! I'm going to implement this strategy with the next book I read and share my experience. Thanks again for sharing!!

Paul, you an amazing communicator, teacher, guide and mentor. Reading is so important for societies and so many people are not educated in how to read, even when they are literate. Apart from my work in fiction, working with writers, giving Creative Writing courses etc I also work with adults returning to education who are dyslexic or have gaps in their learning for whatever reasons. Supporting and enabling people to be literate and importantly to enjoy the process is magical and to get back to YOU you have a true gift in bringing enthusiasm and interest into everything you discuss and teach which is so positively infectious. Thank you! And as ever I shall share. NB I follow you on Better With Paul - I am Linda Cleary and Free Writers Centre is my company :)

Paul, brilliant! I love it, thanks so much for sharing with us. My wife and I just finished her MA program and I realize, I comprehended much more of those books than many books I have read for my business or pleasure, and it was because we were constantly doing things like you are suggesting (although not with that level of consistent organization, we will implement that now for sure!). Great timing, as we are already inspired to read even more and write as well. Thanks again!

    Great tips.
Understanding how your memory works is key to remembering more. For instance, the mind can only hold so much information and when you quickly add more info much is discarded and forgotten. Pauses between chunks of information that you can digest aids in comprehension and remembering from the little experience I have with it.
Forgetting with reading happens with information overload, AKA reading without strategic and very common pauses every 1-3 sentences. My theory is to take lots of pauses every 1-3 sentences depending on how good of a working memory you have and just pausing. Time allows ideas, and sentences to sink in. This obviously isn't going to make you Rain Man but it should help.
The obvious downside to this strategy is that is you lose a lot of time. I calculated about 4 hours extra time for reading the average novel, so as a slow reader it would take me 14 hours to read an average novel instead of maybe 10. However if you test this out and it works for you, you have to ask yourself would you rather know less books really well or understand the basic gist of many books. Still though this is something to take into account.
