Both games have good art direction and that matters more than graphical fidelity
Art style and art direction can make anything look good, and way ahead of its time. The PS5 may have power behind it, but Astro Bot would probably look average if it didn’t have an amazing art style and thankfully it does.
I agree, however the one blemish that stands out on Mario Odyssey is the foliage in the forest. Looks a bit dated. Other than that they both look similar in graphical fidelity.
Can I just say on a side note that Astro Bot is adorable? 😂
More adorable than a gross Italian that's for sure
@@brianthomason5022😂😂😂
@@brianthomason5022nah that’s crazy
People rarely talk abput tuis, and YES IT DOES!!
I like how they both go to sleep in their idle animation
I like that astro bot is playing a vita in idle animation lol too adorable
No matter if your a Nintendo fan or Sony. These are the two best 3D fun platformers games and nothing comes close to them
Not really. It depends what you're looking for. You want immersion, action, humor and story, ratchet and clank rift apart is the game. You want a fun cartoony collectathon in the style of 90s cartoons, go for banjo kazooie. Just because these 2 games are the most "polished " due to them being recent, doesn't mean they're the best. 3d platformers have grown beyond just jumping and collecting. Both of these games are fantastic. I prefer Odyssey myself
@@mania4270 I love Rachet and have played all the games but it’s not soly a platformer. It’s mainly a blast em up adventure game. Astro is heavily a platformer on the same level as Mario. Its contender for game of the year, so it’s a safe bet it’s up there for one of the best platformers.
I like Mario Odyssey but think its weaker than 64 and Galaxy. Astro is about the same level as Odyssey for sure
@@H-TownGamer I don't think it's weaker than galaxy. I think Odyssey has way more depth than galaxy in its moveset, worlds, and overall moon hunting. Each world is so uniquely designed and allows for so much room for improvising that it's pretty much BOTW for Mario. I love galaxy and 64. Galaxy has some of the most unique platforming. But Astro bot, it's a good rollercoaster ride that I dont often go back to unless I wanna do a whole play through.
64 is overrated. It's impactful but it clearly got surpassed that gen by Spyro and banjo. Good game to speed run but 64, imo, just doesn't have much of anything going on due to it being the first 3d platformer. It's iconic and a great history lesson that all gamers should play, but I thought sunshine and the others were better.
I think crash 4 is on par too. I loved switching time and going invisible and playing those crazy hard levels. Honestly crash 4 is the hardest 3d platformer ever made and that entire game amazing from beginning to end. So Astro bot is in my top ten best 3d platformers, not top 5.
But for me, super Mario Odyssey is the best 3d Mario game.
@@mania4270 Odyssey does improve alot of things but it has one major flaw and it’s fundamental flaw and that’s the stars. N64 and on froward, stars were meaningful collectibles, mainly maintained through boss fights, level completion or a hidden discoveries leading to a singular star. Odyssey makes so many stars they are practically everywhere it becomes more about the reward is collecting than level completion and that’s what it centers around is collecting hundreds of moons through out the game. It’s a great game but that major flaw I could never say it’s the best but in the top 3.
Galaxy 1 practically has the best record for ratings and users scores of all time. It was doing a lot of things right if it is the highest rated Mario game not just by critics but also players to date
@@H-TownGamer they're both matched on critic scores pretty much and that was because the Wii was so new innovative at the time. And many ppl grew up with 64, sunshine, and galaxy games. They had become nostalgic by the time Odyssey came out so for some ppl, it's hard to put Odyssey above those.
As for the star issue. I think it's perfectly done. Every time I got to a world, I would play the main mission after I was done, I'd go hunting for stars and usually it didn't take long before either had more than enough to move on. It never felt tedious unless I was trying to 100 percent the game to get the darker side of the moon. But when I can definitely say I had a better time hundred percenting Odyssey and honestly that's where the game started to really click with me. All the hidden challenges that were completely optional unless I wanted to look for all the stars, that was great. Galaxy and Galaxy 2 really get repetitive when trying to 100 percent the. Because I'm constantly replaying the same linear levels over and over again to get green stars, lost stars, secret stars, purple coin stars, cosmic comet stars, etc. They just felt like variations of the same levels but with different stipulations and time limits. Again these are all 10/10 games and I'm just nitpicking but my recent play through of Odyssey really made everything click. It's probably the best collectathon ever made in contention with Jak and daxter 1.
the fact that mario odyssey even stands a chance is extremely impressive, considering the hardware it's running on.
It really doesn’t hold a candle to Astro bot. It’s still a fun game 7 years later but Astro Bot is definitely an improvement in every regard.
@@AidanS99How so? The world's aren't as big and the collecting doesn't have much depth. For me, astrobot compared more to 3d world or super Mario galaxy. With Odyssey and Bowser's fury, Nintendo is focusing on open world platforming and combining Mario's abilities while Astro bot is fun, it's more about the level design and collecting the same stuff in each level, kind of like 3d world and galaxy rather than searching around a big non linear world for collectables
Also considering that it came out almost 6 years ago
@@mania4270astro bot blows mario away
@@luigihatesyou4217 no it doesn't kid. Lay off the crack. It's really good tho
The fact that the comparison is being made to Mario to any degree says all it needs to.
true.
The fact that odyssey rivals a ps5 platformer is saying alot about good developers regardless of power
The charm of improvised liquid physics and particles is a good step on Sony's side.
It does not rival it in Physics and graphics, Astro Bot sweeps it in that area, no debate at ALL. But if we are talking about the overall joy of each games, well that is debatable.
@@ETGamer-yl6dm nah both developers are on par regardless of power
@@ETGamer-yl6dm that's it but overall odyssey is better
@@ETGamer-yl6dm graphics are unique to each game so not really
Nice to see that Sony has taken some pointers and improved them.
Holy shit, two cakes!
Refreshing to see a comparison of two wonderful games.
Lately when YT recommends a comparison, it's a depressing reminder of how far Ubisoft have fallen.
2 of the best games 🔥🔥🔥 I'm on my 1st play through of odyssey and been taking my time lol its so good, I'm definitely getting astro soon
Astro bot is must be water resistant
So do Atom.
Funny how Astro, as a robot, can't drown, but it can get sleepy lol
My 3D platformer rankings:
1. Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2
2. Super Mario Odyssey (switchable with 3)
3. Astro Bot (switchable with 2)
4. Banjo Kazooie
5. Super Mario 64
6. Super Mario Sunshine
Wrong
@@fosho332 well the rankings is just a personal opinion. There’s no doubt in my mind Super Mario Galaxy 1 is the greatest and certainly the most creative 3D platformer topped with arguably the best musical score in gaming history (it’s music is like the Star Wars or Jaws of video games)
@@fosho332 but I can’t really put my foot in the ground and say “Astro Bot is better than Odyssey” or “Odyssey is better than Astro Bot” because I love both and I think both of them have strengths over each other. You can disagree with that, though.

I don’t know how this is an actual comparison? Both games have good details let’s just leave it at that.
Astro bot looks good and the fact that mario Odyssey can look like a ps5 game is crazy no hate on either game (EDIT) omg I get it it's not 4k but I think they both look equally good ok it's my opinion ok have a good day
lmao, no it doesn't. It doesn't look close to astro bot's visual crispness and detail
@@LiveLXStudiosMario odyssey release in 2017😑
Odyssey looks good but TH-cam compresses even 4K footage uploaded onto here so Astro Bot isnt being shown at its highest quality. Having stylized graphics helps Mario but it’s still night and day when you compare them side by side without TH-cam compression and looking at the environmental textures up close
Maybe on emulator upscaled 4K graphics and high-quality AA it looked like an early PS4 platform game.
But on real hardware nope they cut corners to make the game runs at smooth framerate on Switch.
Mario Odyssey does NOT look like a Ps5 game. A lot of these comparisons do not demonstrate why or how the ps5 is leagues more powerful.
Mario is the king of gaming 😊❤
Always❤
Sorry GTA series way bigger than Mario hahahaha
@@loveaintfree1409 Sorry sweetheart.. I hate to break it to you, but GTA is NOT bigger than Mario.. GTA may be a huge series, but it’s not bigger than Mario because… FACTS😎
@@loveaintfree1409no it's not. The Mario movie made 1.3 billion, Mario as a franchise is way more profitable than GTA.
Yes mario is king
0:51 yeah because Astro is a robot. Advanced technology my friend. Even Astro Boy from the anime has the same ability.
Okay? Why bring a comparison of two very different ips with similar names.
In Japan, Astro Boy is called Tetsuwan Atom (lit. Iron-Armed Atom).
Dude has wet dreams with Astro Boy, apparently
both games look very good by their own merits, Odyssey was very impressive considering the fact is just a slightly more powerful wii u made portable. these kind of games will hold up well even after many years pass. i would like to see Astrobot come to PC that way it doesn't get left behind on the ps5 when new consoles come, much like several other games on older consoles.
Odyssey's drownwing animation feels lame when comparing to SM64.
The final drowning animation in Odyssey definitely seems a bit lame, though the old drowning animation that was cut before release was definitely on a similar level of 64's.
I see what they’re saying when they say game of the year… Astro bot looks amazing
1 - Mario Galaxy 1 and 2
2 - Mario Odyssey
3 - Mario 64
4 - Mario Sunshine
5 - Mario 3D World
6 - Super Lucky Tale
7 - Astro Bot
Mario should've played the wii u for the animation
Eu tenho um maior respeito pelo Mário o rei dos games. 👑👑👑
Yes thank mario odyssey is king👑
Mario odyssey is king👑👑
Im a playstation guy all around but nothing can beat odyssey. Bias or not.
Low key want a game with both. It will never happen but that'd be sweet. Side note astro graphics are on another level that you can't see here in the video. Along with haptics. Chefs kiss. Makes me wonder what Nintendo could do with ps5 hardware.
I doubt I’ll ever play astro bot bc no ps5 but damn that course entrance is sick
Havnt played a Mario game since Sunshine. And I have only played Astros Playroom. Im going to get my daughter a switch oled for her 4th birthday, and im going to buy astro bot for us both to play on my ps5 since she enjoyed playing Astros Playroom
I would recommend not buying a Switch Oled yet. The next Switch might be announced soon and from the rumors. It is backward compatible.
you can play mario oddy on pc with emulator on 4k + mods , it looks and play amazing.
Drowning 🗿
I just platinumed astro bot and it's a super fun game. I do, however, prefer Mario. I prefer the gameplay, control, characters and ascetics of Mario. Astro bot is great but everything being a blue eyed robot gets a little old. And everything branded PlayStation too, like Mario's Odyssey instead of a ps5 shaped ship or Mario's gold coins instead of PlayStation coins. It's not too bad but Mario is better in my opinion. And the game astrobot as whole is a fantastic game, but Mario has the experience.
The crash bandicoot 2 is cold
crash bandicoot down water
Crash bandicoot 3 no killer water
Astro details are bigger but the cactus trick is in Astro too
Can’t wait for the switch 2 3d mario
They are both very similar
I dnt care about physics shit and graphics all what i care about is a good fun to play
I still play old games. Sonic adventure 2 is still fun with good music and visuals.
MARIO
Astro bot has not drown by swimming
I never thought people would still be talking about super mario odyssey
We still talk about Mario 3. Nintendo is timeless
Both are good games, but Odyssey felt like a bit of a chore toward the end, and I didnt really look forward to playing it. It was the first 3D mario game I didnt 100%.
Astro is an absolute joy from start to finish, and I cant wait for the DLC.
The only Mario game that rivals it is Galaxy.
Astro Bot is more innocent and fast paced
All ps4/5 games are on pc?
So pay 700$ to play this game only?
mario was good, but uneven game, some levels felt emtpy, not very fun, and the moons were all over the place. new york world felt the most finished level for sure. cant wait for the 3d new maro for switch 2.
I think I can safely say this after playing both. Astro Bot is better. Graphically and gameplay wise.
I’m not saying this to upset Nintendo fans, it’s been 7 years since Odyssey came out. I would seriously hope that someone would improve on the 3d platforming genre in that amount of time.
Definitely not gameplay or platforming-wise, though. The gameplay and platforming of Odyssey is more creative, free, and the controls feel less stiff; there’s more mobility and it’s more natural. Mario has more maneuvers and the captures are amazing. Beyond that, there’s more to do in Odyssey (especially post-game), it’s longer, and has some challenging levels thrown in there.
However, the graphics of Astro Bot are *stunning* and more attractive to the eye, for sure. There’s also a better “structure”; the progression system is better, it feels better-paced, and of course there’s great collectibles hidden throughout the game (and they don’t feel like useless collectibles, either. They feel like more exciting and rewarding. You want to get the collectibles more in that game than many other games). One could argue the level design is a little better, too.
There’s no doubt Astro Bot is a more “casual” game than Odyssey.I personally believe Odyssey is the stronger game, but of course Astro Bot is phenomenal GOTY material.
Astro Bot isn’t even better than Mario 3D World 😂
I swear what’s throwing me off about Astro is the hyperbole around it lmao

Seems like somebody's projecting their fanboyism...
Why are you being so tribal over f***ing family 3D platformers?
@@gungaloscrungalo8925dude come on.. I hate fanboyism but we all know he’s right.
I’ve never seen a AAA supposedly revolutionary game struggle to sell.
There’s a lot of cognitive dissonance between how this game is portrayed and how the general public actually sees it.
Take botw for example. Many people called it overrated and said reviewers were paid.
I loved the game but I will admit it got so much coverage because it was Zelda.
But people saw through it and bought it in droves. It’s sequel also did extremely well.
Fast forward to Astro, content creators are pushing it as the next messiah but the game isn’t bringing anyone new in.
@@56ty_ What I don't understand is why sales are relevant? This isn't a comparison of sales figures. It's a comparison of details within the game.
Sales aren't always indicative of quality, so why do I care how "the general public" sees either of these games? Why does Astro Bot selling less than Mario Odyssey mean Astro Bot is worse in any way?
@@gungaloscrungalo8925 I don’t think sales always reflect the quality of a game.
But when a revolutionary AAA game comes out people buy it.
Astro came out in the “blue ocean” of AAA first party family friendly Sony platformers and yet its not selling that well.
I’m sure content creators genuinely love the game but it created a sort of echo chamber with such high expectations that can’t be met. I dont think the general public sees these “revolutionary” or “must have” aspects. And this time I can’t blame them.
I don’t think there’s anything bad in describing Astro as a relatively new IP that is trying to find its roots both mechanically and aesthetically.
@@56ty_ Okay, again, why are you still talking about sales here? How are they relevant? This video is about gameplay, and compares these games in terms of detail... why do I care what "the general public" think of either game and how well they sold?
There are loads of factors that play into a game's sales. Quality is one, but also marketing, timing of release, the reputation of the IP (of course a mainline Mario game is going to sell way more than Astro Bot, particularly when it comes out in a new console's launch year like Odyssey)... but my point is that none of them are relevant here.
And who is saying Astro Bot is a supposed to be a revolutionary AAA game?
