Caitriona is always so articulate. Combine that fact with an interviewer who asks intelligent questions and this is what happens....fabulous!

Great interview! Have yet to be disappointed on any interview Cait gives. Extraordinary gift we have at her portrayal of Claire in Outlander.

I'm very surprised that Ms. Balfe didn't mention that Jamie was Claire's protector in a very threatening time, keeping true to his promise that she should "never be scairt" of him or anyone else when he was around. He rose above his times or perhaps was a throwback to knightly chivalry of the Medieval period. So when he let his own upbringing and the mores of his time influence him to mete out punishment in "the Reckoning", Claire's feeling of betrayal must have contained a huge amount of fear. If she could no longer trust Jamie to protect her, if he could turn on her, whom could she trust? She would be alone without her previous buffer, at the mercy of her husband's whims as were all women in that age. Thus his regret and vow never to raise his hand to her again was the first step to restoring that trust.
At the same time for book readers it was made clear that the beating did jar Claire into taking the times she was in more seriously instead of acting as though they should have no impact on her or the people around her. She DID accept that she had to start factoring in other people's safety, especially Jamie's before acting in her headstrong sometimes rash ways.
Lastly, in the book when Jamie found out that Claire was attempting to return to her first husband through the stones when she was caught by the Redcoats and taken to Fort William, he felt tremendous guilt at having punished her for what was her rightful decision - an attempt to honor her first vows. And so he took her to the stones and bid her farewell.
