John McArthur is an excellent preacher and theologian !! I am only 4 months into coming to The Lord and I have learned so much from his preaching. I have my Bible open and can clearly understand everything for what it really is when I watch his sermons and listen to his Bible studies on Grace To You. May the Lord continue to bless him and keep him well !!
You have found America’s preacher, Brother MacArthur. Your are in a blessed position to learn the Scriptures with a depth of genuine understanding. John’s expositional preaching is rare in this country but, it is of the utmost importance to Christians growth in the knowledge of the truth. Be blessed my brother!
@@debraharper677 John MacArthur himself says that he learns a lot from past, great theologians, and it's arrogance to think we don't need to gain from the knowledge of those who have gone before. (The early church learned their theology from the apostles teaching and letters, explaining the Gospel from the Scriptures.)

Thank you for uploading these videos. I have been blessed to be preaching for close to 20yrs now, during that time I sat under one of the most gifted expositional preachers. He had an tremendous gift from God to break a text down in such a clear concise way, and declare it both logically and boldly. One of the greatest advices he gave us young preacher boys was “for one year, each time you get up to preach, only use one verse as your text. Get all your points from this text.” At first it seemed so impossible, but now I can preach on a word for weeks, slowly dissecting it and explaining it. With all this , and a master’s degree in theology, I have gleaned so much from Mr MacArthur and Mr Lawson. I will be forever thankful and prayerfully hope that the Lord uses it for His glory.
Over the past 15 years I have benefited greatly from the ministry of John MacArthur. He has helped my preaching by example and by his teaching. Thank you Brother John.
As you can see, it's been 5 years since you've posted this lecture series. I find it awesome that a course taught and released 5 years ago is absolutely as valid today as it was when it was created. There are not a lot of things in the human existence where this is true. Amazing how God proves out His unchanging nature, and His unchanging Word through the fact that this course *is* still as valid! I love seeing the fingerprint of God on things. And I see it here! Thank you, Dr. MacArthur, for this series!
This a very useful contribution to this video site. I can learn a lot from one of the finest Bible expositor of all time for FREE without even entering into a seminary. I feel like I'm a student again. Thanks to the guy who post it in public for viewing.
Since 1982, I have been listening off and on to Dr. John MacArthur. He is, without a doubt, one of the top couple of theologians of our century. He is an American treasure; a global treasure. I don't think I've ever heard anything I disagreed with. At times, he's a bit shrewish about Arminian-leaning theologians, but I'll grant him that opinion if he so chooses.

I am soooo grateful that I NOW understand the power and importance of this style of preaching. My dad did it for so long and I was spiritually asleep. Thank God for His grace on me - so patient with me, rich in love, slow to anger. I can't get enough of it, and it is hard to listen to anything else. I only listen to my father and John MacArthur...I know eventually I will branch out but he is it for now as God is leading me....plus amazing app.

I think maybe he didn't clarify better because of the men he was speaking to, that understood his position. As I told Mike, John doesn't believe that miracles can never happen, or that God has stopped healing people, rather the power given to the Apostles is no longer available, because it's usefulness has past. God's full revelation is available to all through His Word, the miracles performed today are souls being redeemed to Christ through faith.

@@billyboat7198 Of course, you define "moving in the Spirit" as performing signs and wonders. (Don't you?) Perhaps that's your definition -- but it's not necessarily God's definition. The trouble is that when we have learned something a certain way, we are blinkered when it comes to seeing further. When Peter preached his first sermon (Acts 2), three thousand people were converted. He was "moving in the Spirit." Or, would you dispute that? When John MacArthur preaches the Word, people are converted. They have multiple baptisms at Grace Community Church every month. Are you saying that that is the work of man? Or, can you admit, perhaps, that God uses His word, preached by men, to draw the hearers to Himself? You are never going to agree with every preacher's theology, that's a given. But be careful how you define what the Holy Spirit is doing or not doing 😊

I started going to a church that taught this way and I have learned so much about the word. It actually helped me and encouraged me to read the Bible more. I had come from a church that taught topical but they would also bring in some funky doctrines that they got from other churches or people. This encouraged some weird manifestations.

I have been reading "The Juvenilization of American Christianity," myself. The Author doesn't say there isn't a PLACE for the modern church service (or "junior church"), but rather that balance is the key.

You don’t have to be a Calvinist to listen to John's preaching. Follow Acts 17:11, search, put your preconceived notions aside and search the Scriptures all the more. See how it fits together as a whole. The same message is throughout the Bible, it never contradicts itself. If something seems like it is, keep searching it out until you figure out why it seemed so, because it never contradicts.

He isn't denying that God can or will heal people today, he is stating that we aren't going to have the power to do it as was described in the NT. Those manifestations of the Spirit's power were necessary to demonstrate the authority of the message and the authenticity of the messenger. Now that we have God's Word (His complete revelation as described in the NT and OT), there is no longer a need for miraculous acts to back up the claims. The Word itself testifies on God's behalf.
Apostle Paul does use illustrations other than from the Old Testament. In 2 Timothy he uses the illustrations of soldier, athlete and farmer to teach about being a good teacher and minister of Christ.

The only powerful and most effective way to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ is not reading only through the text but most importantly to it's context (trough the Lens of Grace).According to 2 Tim. 2:15,it clearly says that we should know how to rightly divide the Word of Truth.I'm not against expository preaching,but for me our method of teaching will not be effective if we are not preaching the Gospel of Grace which is the only Gospel that Paul preached.

Even things that seem "mundane" to us now. Like EVERY MAN IN A SUIT N TIE. EVERY WOMAN DRESSED APPROPRIATE. Look at old pictures from the 20's and 30's for example. Back when outside of work Family life revolved around the church mostly. We dont need more "people pleasing pastors" WE NEED MORE MEN OF GOD. Pastors more worried about filling pews and being popular than MAKING DISCIPLES. Spend more time watching sports than preparing Sundsy sermons. We ought to study and presch til we collapse, rest, and right back at it. NOT just the pastors EVERY Child of God. Matt 10:38 KJV Most (not all) of the modern churches might as well have a cross with two kids swings hanging on each side out front. Because half the claiming Christians are playing around with Christ. Reduced the church to a social platground, or "entertainment venue". You know how shocked unbelievers must be when they pass, and realize it's TOO LATE. Well HOW SHOCKED do you think MANY CHRISTIANS will be. LUKE 9:62, Matt. 10:34-39, Matt 8:22, Many grumble about the hypocrites, yet the hypocrites won't be judging you, ALMIGHTY GOD WILL. (Revelation 4:8; JKV) Respectfully, I wonder if Dr MacArthur forgot about this passage when he ignorantly judged the depth of spiritual maturity for those who are "7/11" worshippers? I have known heathens who appreciate and sing the old hymns ... which, I actually do appreciate along with some of our modern day worship songs, too. I hold deep respect for Dr. MacArthur and the service his has provided for so longto the Church. I actually came to this site and learned lots about preaching, but I also don't understand why we, as Christians, have to at times take petty shots at each other? Humbly reminds me of Jonathan Edwards words, "For every work of God, there is the corresponding work of the flesh". Aside, from Christ, none of us knows everything.
The juvenileisation (sp?) of Worship is the feeling-based Pentecostalism, moving the "church" towards the Gifts, and not centralizing them in the Word. It is the seeking of the blessing, and not the Savior. Amen!!
One of the questions that I asked myself many years ago was did Jesus and Paul preach expositionally? A man once told me many years ago that if I knew the first five books of the Bible the rest would be easy. Many years later I would say the same thing. How many pastors and preachers preach the first five books of the Bible? There are many references to those books in the Old and New Testament. Imagine preaching Exodus 1:11 which would be about 1250 BC and then 1 Kings 6:1 which would be 1446 BC. The actual date of the exodus is 1446 BC. Knowing that then explain Exodus 1:11. Unless you can answer that question then you do not know your Bible well enough. What happened between the time of Jesus and when the first gospel was written?
So if we have held someone that has come to life from the dead, and if we have held someone that was healed from cancer (without treatment), who was the healer ?

Paul called out Alexander, Hymenaeus (1 Ti. 1:20) and others. In doing so, he is performing his job as a good shepherd to warn the flock of wolves creeping in. If we love the sheep we must warn them about any danger. If there was a doctor prescribing bad medicine to your family members, would you not call him out by name and warn them all? However, it needs to be done with the right heart, not sarcastic and judgmental.

Matthew's 18 start with Mark 1:1. None start Acts 1:23. I know no one, except John 4:54 :) For example, Then, Matthew's 16 asked that He would show them a sign from heaven. The goal of preaching / teaching should be to take the meaning that is in the text and explain it to people today. The goal should not be to take people's interests today and then go look for passages of the Bible that speak to those interests.
How can you say you believe in the Bible without believing you can do the miracles of it did not Jesus say you will do greater things then I and yes he said this to his disciples but aren’t we also disciples isn’t the Holy Spirit Still here on earth HOW CAN YOU NOT BELIEVE IN MIRACLES WOW !!! ???? great teaching, however I am concerned that he would tell his students that they will never have anyone healed of cancer, or never raise up a paralytic. he says that will never happen, my question is why not? has faith changed, or the blood and its ability to heal set free and deliver, if anyone can help with tis, please respond.
@@alvinpacle7996 Very true But Jesus did heal people of physical and spiritual Sickness. And there is no clear and definable point biblically biblically where we are told that that does not happen or cannot happen anymore that has to be assumed
*......Look on TH-cam and find John McArthur’s systemic exposition Chapter by chapter verse by verse teaching on all 66 books of the Bible. You won’t find many. He mostly does topical sermons like this one. I wish he would go Chapter by chapter verse by verse without skipping any verses on every single book of the Bible. But we are mostly stuck with these topical sermons... Which can help but I prefer the other. To be fair he does go verse by verse though some New Testament Books. Maybe he did the others but he is not TH-cam Video..*
4:16 regarding modern paraphrases/dynamic equivalence , I respectfully disagree with Dr. MacArthur. The Bible was written in Koine Greek which was market place Greek. If we give a literal word for word wooden translation to a new growing christian it actually goes against the reason why the Bible was written in the first place, which is to speak in the language which people understand. Love to hear more thoughts on this. I think technically literal word for word translation is not possible, in one way or the other any translation is an attempt to communicate the meaning of the text. I think the idea here is that there are many translations which are translated to match the theological presuppositions of the translators, especially of most of the newer translations, this means that because it couldnt mean that other thing

@@miamiliquidations688 you're apparently unfamiliar with the issue at hand and in particular... what is happening to the Gospel as a result of what Stanley is doing. It is the foundation and therefore, fortification of unbelief - not belief itself... Therefore it really calls into question the qualification of what true belief is. This distinction is far deeper than the lowest common denominator of belief that passes in contemporary Christianity. Many of the pronounced heretics in the Bible... believe to that degree. This is very dangerous and your comment shows itself as a victim to the danger. This admonition here is solely for your edification and nothing else. Hopefully it prompts such.. God bless

John McArthur is an excellent preacher and theologian !! I am only 4 months into coming to The Lord and I have learned so much from his preaching. I have my Bible open and can clearly understand everything for what it really is when I watch his sermons and listen to his Bible studies on Grace To You. May the Lord continue to bless him and keep him well !!

Thank you for uploading these videos. I have been blessed to be preaching for close to 20yrs now, during that time I sat under one of the most gifted expositional preachers. He had an tremendous gift from God to break a text down in such a clear concise way, and declare it both logically and boldly. One of the greatest advices he gave us young preacher boys was “for one year, each time you get up to preach, only use one verse as your text. Get all your points from this text.” At first it seemed so impossible, but now I can preach on a word for weeks, slowly dissecting it and explaining it.
With all this , and a master’s degree in theology, I have gleaned so much from Mr MacArthur and Mr Lawson. I will be forever thankful and prayerfully hope that the Lord uses it for His glory.
Over the past 15 years I have benefited greatly from the ministry of John MacArthur. He has helped my preaching by example and by his teaching. Thank you Brother John.
As you can see, it's been 5 years since you've posted this lecture series. I find it awesome that a course taught and released 5 years ago is absolutely as valid today as it was when it was created. There are not a lot of things in the human existence where this is true. Amazing how God proves out His unchanging nature, and His unchanging Word through the fact that this course *is* still as valid! I love seeing the fingerprint of God on things. And I see it here! Thank you, Dr. MacArthur, for this series!

Since 1982, I have been listening off and on to Dr. John MacArthur. He is, without a doubt, one of the top couple of theologians of our century. He is an American treasure; a global treasure. I don't think I've ever heard anything I disagreed with. At times, he's a bit shrewish about Arminian-leaning theologians, but I'll grant him that opinion if he so chooses.

I am soooo grateful that I NOW understand the power and importance of this style of preaching. My dad did it for so long and I was spiritually asleep. Thank God for His grace on me - so patient with me, rich in love, slow to anger. I can't get enough of it, and it is hard to listen to anything else. I only listen to my father and John MacArthur...I know eventually I will branch out but he is it for now as God is leading me....plus amazing app.

I think maybe he didn't clarify better because of the men he was speaking to, that understood his position. As I told Mike, John doesn't believe that miracles can never happen, or that God has stopped healing people, rather the power given to the Apostles is no longer available, because it's usefulness has past. God's full revelation is available to all through His Word, the miracles performed today are souls being redeemed to Christ through faith.

Perhaps that's your definition -- but it's not necessarily God's definition.
The trouble is that when we have learned something a certain way, we are blinkered when it comes to seeing further.
When Peter preached his first sermon (Acts 2), three thousand people were converted. He was "moving in the Spirit." Or, would you dispute that?
When John MacArthur preaches the Word, people are converted. They have multiple baptisms at Grace Community Church every month. Are you saying that that is the work of man?
Or, can you admit, perhaps, that God uses His word, preached by men, to draw the hearers to Himself?
You are never going to agree with every preacher's theology, that's a given. But be careful how you define what the Holy Spirit is doing or not doing 😊

I started going to a church that taught this way and I have learned so much about the word. It actually helped me and encouraged me to read the Bible more. I had come from a church that taught topical but they would also bring in some funky doctrines that they got from other churches or people. This encouraged some weird manifestations.
I do have a class by Dr. Rosscup on Hermeneutics, I will get to it sometime this Spring.

You don’t have to be a Calvinist to listen to John's preaching. Follow Acts 17:11, search, put your preconceived notions aside and search the Scriptures all the more. See how it fits together as a whole. The same message is throughout the Bible, it never contradicts itself. If something seems like it is, keep searching it out until you figure out why it seemed so, because it never contradicts.

He isn't denying that God can or will heal people today, he is stating that we aren't going to have the power to do it as was described in the NT. Those manifestations of the Spirit's power were necessary to demonstrate the authority of the message and the authenticity of the messenger. Now that we have God's Word (His complete revelation as described in the NT and OT), there is no longer a need for miraculous acts to back up the claims. The Word itself testifies on God's behalf.

Apostle Paul does use illustrations other than from the Old Testament. In 2 Timothy he uses the illustrations of soldier, athlete and farmer to teach about being a good teacher and minister of Christ.

The only powerful and most effective way to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ is not reading only through the text but most importantly to it's context (trough the Lens of Grace).According to 2 Tim. 2:15,it clearly says that we should know how to rightly divide the Word of Truth.I'm not against expository preaching,but for me our method of teaching will not be effective if we are not preaching the Gospel of Grace which is the only Gospel that Paul preached.

Even things that seem "mundane" to us now. Like EVERY MAN IN A SUIT N TIE. EVERY WOMAN DRESSED APPROPRIATE. Look at old pictures from the 20's and 30's for example. Back when outside of work Family life revolved around the church mostly. We dont need more "people pleasing pastors" WE NEED MORE MEN OF GOD.
Pastors more worried about filling pews and being popular than MAKING DISCIPLES.
Spend more time watching sports than preparing Sundsy sermons.
We ought to study and presch til we collapse, rest, and right back at it.

Respectfully, I wonder if Dr MacArthur forgot about this passage when he ignorantly judged the depth of spiritual maturity for those who are "7/11" worshippers? I have known heathens who appreciate and sing the old hymns ... which, I actually do appreciate along with some of our modern day worship songs, too.
I hold deep respect for Dr. MacArthur and the service his has provided for so longto the Church. I actually came to this site and learned lots about preaching, but I also don't understand why we, as Christians, have to at times take petty shots at each other?
Humbly reminds me of Jonathan Edwards words, "For every work of God, there is the corresponding work of the flesh". Aside, from Christ, none of us knows everything.

One of the questions that I asked myself many years ago was did Jesus and Paul preach expositionally? A man once told me many years ago that if I knew the first five books of the Bible the rest would be easy. Many years later I would say the same thing. How many pastors and preachers preach the first five books of the Bible? There are many references to those books in the Old and New Testament. Imagine preaching Exodus 1:11 which would be about 1250 BC and then 1 Kings 6:1 which would be 1446 BC. The actual date of the exodus is 1446 BC. Knowing that then explain Exodus 1:11. Unless you can answer that question then you do not know your Bible well enough. What happened between the time of Jesus and when the first gospel was written?
So if we have held someone that has come to life from the dead, and if we have held someone that was healed from cancer (without treatment), who was the healer ?

Paul called out Alexander, Hymenaeus (1 Ti. 1:20) and others. In doing so, he is performing his job as a good shepherd to warn the flock of wolves creeping in. If we love the sheep we must warn them about any danger. If there was a doctor prescribing bad medicine to your family members, would you not call him out by name and warn them all? However, it needs to be done with the right heart, not sarcastic and judgmental.

The goal of preaching / teaching should be to take the meaning that is in the text and explain it to people today. The goal should not be to take people's interests today and then go look for passages of the Bible that speak to those interests.

great teaching, however I am concerned that he would tell his students that they will never have anyone healed of cancer, or never raise up a paralytic. he says that will never happen, my question is why not? has faith changed, or the blood and its ability to heal set free and deliver, if anyone can help with tis, please respond.

The gospel is not to heal your temporary body. But to heal your soul.

*......Look on TH-cam and find John McArthur’s systemic exposition Chapter by chapter verse by verse teaching on all 66 books of the Bible. You won’t find many. He mostly does topical sermons like this one. I wish he would go Chapter by chapter verse by verse without skipping any verses on every single book of the Bible. But we are mostly stuck with these topical sermons... Which can help but I prefer the other. To be fair he does go verse by verse though some New Testament Books. Maybe he did the others but he is not TH-cam Video..*

4:16 regarding modern paraphrases/dynamic equivalence , I respectfully disagree with Dr. MacArthur. The Bible was written in Koine Greek which was market place Greek. If we give a literal word for word wooden translation to a new growing christian it actually goes against the reason why the Bible was written in the first place, which is to speak in the language which people understand. Love to hear more thoughts on this. I think technically literal word for word translation is not possible, in one way or the other any translation is an attempt to communicate the meaning of the text. I think the idea here is that there are many translations which are translated to match the theological presuppositions of the translators, especially of most of the newer translations, this means that because it couldnt mean that other thing

@@miamiliquidations688 you're apparently unfamiliar with the issue at hand and in particular... what is happening to the Gospel as a result of what Stanley is doing. It is the foundation and therefore, fortification of unbelief - not belief itself... Therefore it really calls into question the qualification of what true belief is. This distinction is far deeper than the lowest common denominator of belief that passes in contemporary Christianity. Many of the pronounced heretics in the Bible... believe to that degree.
This is very dangerous and your comment shows itself as a victim to the danger.
