  • Violette de Solliès is one of our favorite figs with nice berry flavor and moderate sweetness. This has been my favorite variety (along with Bourjassotte Noire and Noire de Barbentane) for making jam. Two other growers have reported that this variety splits badly for them but I have not had this problem and have not heard it from others who grow it. I have 8 more trees of this variety in pots that I plan to plant in case I decide to someday make jam commercially.

General question for you, sir. How do you keep varmints (specifically raccoons) away from your ripe figs? I had a bad time with it in my backyard last season, as I live across the street from a creek. Thanks!

I've never noticed a problem with any thing besides birds. I'm ramping up my protection against those this month.

can you compare the Negronne ( VDB ) and this variety ? is VDB good for making jam ? i grow fig in the tropic so i'm afraid that this fig could get split

It does split for me, and in a test done yesterday, my wife prefers it to black madeira, but our son and me prefer BM :-) . In any case excellent fig !

Try more potassium Daniel! :) I prefer to eat both varieties but for Jam, this fig seems nicest.

@@Figaholics thanks Harvey, you're a pro, for me the potassium comes from the wood bbq/oven ashes, and additions are random, but ok that tree gets the next bach of ashes :-)

Does fig violette de sollies need to be pollinated?

No, it is a common type fig.

I think you got sidetracked on splitting and forgot to mention how it tastes.

I want to know how to grow Violette de Solliès Fig in Japan. Trees grow too big but no fruits at all. Even if the fruits come out, the fruits will crack because it rains a lot in Japan.

You may need to use plastic structures over your trees to protect from rain. Additional calcium fertilizer might reduce cracking. Some experiments with sweet cherries also showed benefits when spraying calcium foliar sprays on fruit just before rains.

@@Figaholics Thank you! Both methods are good ideas. I'll try it this year.

    What fertilizer do you use?

I buy bulk liquid fertilizers and earlier in the year I use more nitrogen but but beginning in May focus mostly on potassium, using potassium thiosulfate injected into my irrigation water.

    Brogiottto Nero in Italy

Did you know that there was more than one fig in Italy called Brogiotto Nero? The Brogiotto Nero I have is not the same as Violette de Sollies or Bourjasotte Noire.

@@erichhartmann9565 Not the Brogiotto Nero from Tuscany. There are two different figs with the same name in Italy, they are not both the same as Violette de Sollies. Do you grow any of them?
