Best value red wine I've had: Emmanuel Darnaud Crozes-Hermitage "Mis en bouche" 2016, 12.80€!! Rhône in general offers good value. I also had a delicious Etna rosso by Benanti, which cost ~16-17€. Just for the shock factor, I'll recommend a Burgundy(!): Chateau de Cheilly Santenay Vielles Vignes 2016, I paid 19€.
It surprised me you didnt include any Argentinian wine in the recommendations, last week I had a 12 USD catena zapata malbec that was really good. Also last night I had an amazing cremant d'alsace that I bought this year in Chile for 18 USD, extremelly good and over delivered for its Price.
Wish I could find Catena for that cheap! I think even with 12 wines, it's hard to be comprehensive - in the top 100 video Matt waxed poetic about Malbec (which made us happy since it's my SO's favorite!)
Thanks for all your videos. I been watching you for a while. I’m an American in Italy and tonight I saw your Nanfree for €10.50 in a supermarket. I will pick up a bottle to compare notes with what you stated. Take care and thank you!
Nicely done. Good selection of wines to source. The Borsao is a steel and a great Monday to Thursday wine…. Also had the Borsao Tres Picos which was slightly better and worth the bump in price. A bit more body to it. Really enjoy the videos.
I'm someone that's gone hardcore scotch/whisky/whiskey as my evening drink of choice. But I love watching your video's especially when I'm learning about bottles that cost $18 or less as I see that price point as being equivalent to a $60 bottle of whisky in terms of "cost of a standard pour."
Really cool lineup, interesting to see which American wines are considered good values for someone who lives in the states, as the entry-level wines usually have such a big tax hit on them that they lose their value proposition once they hit the Norwegian market. Extremely interesting to hear your comparison between the Valpolicella and a Sonoma Pinot Noir! I've found the exact same similarity in a couple Valpolicella wines, especially a Ripasso from Monte del Frà.
My wine shop did a tasting of Borsao a few months ago and I never paid to attend the tasting. You play guitar? Definitely my favorite wine TH-camr now.
I have been enjoying torrontes lately. It brings the fun of Sauvignon blanc without the grass and green pepper. I can convince myself it’s summer even though it just snowed here.
Great video! I love these types of videos. These are exactly the types of wines I'd be wanting to try to push in my retail setting for the average customer. Of course in my state the availability of some of these might be a bit iffy. But I still love learning about these. It's been a while since I've had Borsao but I remember it being a nice wine for that price point. I've not had or seen the Rioja Vega. But a brand of Rioja wine I've had a lot of success with is Bodegas LAN. I've turned a number of customers onto their Crianza and it's become one of the top selling foreign wines in the store. I'm not sure if it might be a bit too oaky for your taste. But I think it comes across pretty nicely for the price point I have, under $15.
The Esporão Colheita is absurdly good for the price. I had some at a Portuguese food event at a Central Market and it was a 92-point wine for me - like a well-made $50 Napa Cab but about $20 instead.
The Rioja Vega is a steal for 11 euro. A couple of my cheap red dates: Penfolds Koonunga Hill shiraz, Fontanafredda Briccotonde barbera, Herdade de São Miguel Alentejano and Torre del Falasco Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore. Looking forward to your Abruzzo tasting.
Great video. Thanks for putting it out. I love the budget/value wine reviews and recommendations. I'd be interesting to blind some vs more expensive wines. Thank you.
I love finding great values!! My favorite under $25 red wines were the 2019 Art of Earth Malbec from Mendoza (enjoyed at $8.99 and $10.99) and 2019 Beringer Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($21.97 discounted to under $14!). The former was an amazing value organic unoaked red with multiple broad categories of flavors/aromas. It paired extremely well with steaks and homemade Korean barbecue! In terms of most memorable red wines ever, this is top 4 in my book by (the others are fancier Napa cabs and a merlot). In terms of the latter, it clearly outperformed its price point as a more serious wine: delicately oaked, red+dark fruit, and autumnal aromas! beat a pretty solid entry-level Napa Cabernet (2018 BV Napa) thanks to complexity and more subtle oak aging. It paired spectacularly with a Outside Skirt Steak!
Just watched your video - so nice to see a tasting of pretty affordable wines, thx! I'm from Austria and there are pretty good reds like Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt where you really heading to high end wines from 20-25 euros but these are not easily available in the states. But what I tasted recently and was very impressed from was the Lopez de Heredia Viña Cubillo Crianza from Rioja. Around 16 Euros, fairly available in Austria and Germany and great value for money from my view. What do you think?
So many great wines under 25 dollars, if you live in Europe is even better. My favorite regions for reds under 25 are Languedoc Roussillon, Terra Alta, Bierzo, Dão, Chinon, Alentejo, Etna rosso, Naoussa Xinomavro.
Those Riedel 002s are huge! They're around twice as big as the Gabriel-Glas StandArt. You could fit an entire bottle in them! Nice price point though - about half as much as the StandArt...
Good video Matthew. I think Rioja can be a good value. But whenever I'm going to drink a wine under $25...i feel you can't go wrong with a Chianti Classico Reserva or Barbera d'Alba. For me, it's a lot easier to drink than the big fruit bomb cabs.... especially when young. Thanks for all the hard work putting these videos together!
@@drmatthewhorkey that's true. I used to get Monsanto CC at Costco for $18, but those days are over. You can still get Banfi and Ruffino (not gold label) for $25 and under.
I got my parents on La Creme Pinot Noir (Sonoma or Monterey, whichever is screwcap is $20 and they love it), as well as some CDR as ways to try approachable step-up wine. I should definitely see if I can find them some of the others mentioned here!
Happy to see a video about affordable wines but none of your list is available at my total Wine and more any chance you could make an affordable list of wines that are more available?
Sorry to hear they aren’t available in your local area as some of these are available at Total Wine (state specific). Wine Searcher is also your best friend in terms of finding where wines are available.
Olga Raffault from Chinon has some amazing wines for under or around 20 euros. Franck Balthazar 's Crozes-Hermitage is good. So many options in Chianti region, Tiberio's and Cirelli's Montepulciano and in Spain you can buy Remelluri Reserva for 22ish euros
Good evening doc. Tenuta Sant'Antonio is a winery that i reccomend to everybody , it does'nt matter if you drink the basic Valpolicella or the best Amarone selection the quality is just over the top, to me the Scaia Paradiso is one of the best quality price red wine available in Italy not just in the Valpolicella area, try to believe .
