Opposition MPs On Waqf Amendment Bill JPC Call It A Mockery, Lodge Dissent

Opposition MPs on the House panel reviewing the Waqf Amendment Bill have raised strong objections, accusing BJP members of ignoring their concerns and presenting recommendations that contradict the Constitution. The MPs claimed that they were given a 655-page draft report late last evening, leaving them little time to review it or propose their own recommendations.
Today, the Joint Parliamentary Committee adopted the draft report with a 16-11 majority vote, which will be submitted to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla tomorrow. Opposition members, however, have submitted their dissent notes, challenging the report’s contents.
The committee's chairman, BJP veteran Jagdambika Pal, defended the amendments, stating that many addressed the opposition's concerns and would enhance the efficiency of Waqf boards. He also confirmed that the Speaker would decide whether the Bill would be reintroduced during the upcoming Budget Session.
Opposition MPs argue that the proposed legislation could undermine Waqf boards and pave the way for increased government interference. They pointed out that out of the 66 proposed amendments, 23 came from BJP members, while 44 were suggested by the opposition. However, they claim most of their proposals were dismissed, while BJP recommendations were accepted.
