    So much better than when people just say draw every day.

    Thanks bobby! I've been feeling really insecure about my art skills lately, and I felt like I wasn't improving at all and I've been putting a lot of pressure on myself to get better faster but I think I just need to be patient and really apply more logic to learning as I draw. One day I'll be a student for schoolism but right now I'm currently jobless so I can't afford it right now, but when it's in my budget I'll be signing up for a monthly subscription. :)

      let me know if the link for the alarm works, you'll have to have the app "Zedge" to be able to download it.

      +Mediocre PC Gaming i made this one as well, but it's not as smooth as the first Bobby Chiu alarm in the previous comment in my opinion.
      beta.zedge.net/ringtone/b266328a-39fc-456f-ad34-710aa4e665be?Web&Profile&
      Hope one of them is useful to you! :)
      Remember, you'll need the app "Zedge" to be able to use either of them.

    I wanted to be a cat artist, so I looked at experienced cat artists, used their techniques, watched videos, and practised every single week until I got it. I feel like I owe it to my younger self and the internet that I had 'logic' figured out early. The internet is so powerful, use it!

    I love this video and your addition of logic to the effort + time equation because it is true the work without direction is pointless. On a technical side note, I would adjust the equation to say EFFORT x TIME x LOGIC because each factor is important in the sense that if you put in no effort, or have no time, the other factors in the equation won’t make up for it. Anything times 0 equals 0.

    That's not how math works, Bobby. :-D If effort and time are 100 and logic is 0, then the result is 100.
    The right formula for what you're saying would be EFFORT x TIME x LOGIC, which also makes more sense overall.

    Please correct me if I'm wrong; I'm a slow learner ( I had an art teacher that picked on me a little for getting elements and principles wrong in the first semester until a year later he found out about my dyslexia which I don't like to mention because other teachers in the post have use that against) : what I understood was don't just keep on drawing the same shape with no improvement (or as my art teacher would say don't be a printer just draw a pretty picture with no meaning), use the elements and principles to improve in one's art style to tell a story with in seconds?

    • @StevePadmore
      @StevePadmore 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hopefully I will get corrected if I am wrong as well, but I believe the "Logic" in Bobby's formula is the *how* you will spend your time and effort to actually improve
      So for the example you put: If the goal is to use your art to tell a story, how should you spend your time and effort to be able to tell an effective story? What are the things you would need to learn and/or practice in order for you to do so?
      I hope that helps!

    i have a question, i have this problem that i know that what i'm doing in improving is logical and i know that over time i'll improve but in doing so it's also not logical to do it because in the end there is this boundary that i can't escape. In my case is i might unable to find a job because i live in a third world country and i don't know how to live in other country. Also i'm currently an engineering student that want to have a job as an artist. I know what i need to do to reach the point that i can say i think it's good enough but it's really illogical that i threw away my engineering knowledge and go to another country to work as an artist at some random studio that i don't know how to live. So what should i do?

      Suppose, you want to be better at painting environments. But you are practicing, figure drawing with full intensity, you will have zero success rate in your goal. Like bobby gave an example, if you practice drawing straight lines for hours a day, but your success goal does not need you to grow this skill to draw straight lines, you are wasting time although doing a lot of effort and putting a lot of time. I will give you a personal example, when I started learning digital art and animation, my tutor started teaching me lots of different traditional media for painting (water colors, poster colors, pencil colors, calligraphy etc etc) but as I was aware about digital art already and knew that further in my career I will paint digitally only, I did not need to learn all of these or any of these traditional media. Only the fundamentals of colors and painting coz that would help me digitally as well. That's what Bobby means in applying logic. Art as a subject is vast and you have to focus your direction and work towards that only then you will see success.
      I hope it helps.

      Ambuj Joshi Remember, traditional does help you draw digitally. So don’t completely stop traditional. Connect both tools

    • @jeevatma
      @jeevatma 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You are correct Ruby, although its not related to the discussion. And just to clarify, I said I did not need to learn traditional tools but the fundamentals of art as I was doing specialization in character animation. You can imagine how irrelevant it would have been if I invested lots of energy trying to master pencil colors, then gauche, then water colors, then calligraphy ... Rather I invested time in studying gesture drawing. That was the point I wanted to explain, logic in learning which is the point of discussion.

    So the logic is like emotional inteligence? So as i understood emotional intelligence, is if you got a really good and fast car and give it to your grandmother to drive, she would not get the full potencial of it, she would drive it really slow, but if you give that car to a professional racer, he would do wonderfull things with that car. As i see the inteligence is the car, and the emotional intelligence is the driver. You can have the best car in the world but if you are a bad driver you will get nowhere or really slowly, the same way you can be really inteligent but if you can not use that intelligence in a effective way, will not get you much further. As i understood the logc Bobby is refering is the driver- the way you use time and effort and make the decision how to use them, and i would say the time and effort are in some way the car. Sorry about my english, i hope my opinion made across.

    This is SUCH good advice!! Like if you are trying to learn to draw realistically, and you spend hours of hard work trying with no references to what, say the human body, looks like, that will be time wasted because you still will not know how to draw the human body realistically. You will only know how to draw a badly proportioned body slightly less badly.

    This formula is good, but not perfect. Efficient learning structure is often counter-intuitive, not logical. If we are aiming for automaticity and high levels of ease in our skills, we need to not rely on brute-force massed practice, but rather spend a fair amount of effort across a large span of time. It's also worth mentioning that putting in a lot of effort is hard to quantify. It's not the subject itself that should be difficult; the way in which we approach learning the material is what needs to be difficult. We need to avoid illusions of competence with our practice methods. If the goal is to use visual information from memory, you need to practice drawing with it from memory and comparing it to the original. There is no real alternative to this if you want to draw something from imagination. Simulating picture-making situations where you need to be familiar with visual information you practiced is a great way to create more accurate memories that stick longer. Delay the feedback of what things should look like(using reference) until you're finished, and then correct the piece. When you can, try to solve problems on your own without looking up a solution; try creating the color-comp without looking at other people's images; try to invent the expression before looking at examples. Meaning creates stronger memories; the more you understand the possibilities and implications of any information, the stronger your memories of it will be.

    Oh I think I can understand what you mean just by looking at the title (haven't watched yet), if you have lots of time, puts lots of effort like the usual teenager drawing anime characters, but you don't have the "logic" of a professional because you lack the fundamentals etc... you end up not progressing; if you lack effort or time it will be longer but the point is you need the logic because anything *0 is still = 0. And of course if you don't put any effort and don't have any time, nothing will come out, you can't just sit there and wish things to happen.
    If you have money you can just go buy some logic, saving your time and putting your effort towards this logic. So everything is money hehe.
