For this who want to know, I think this is about being friends with someone who has depression/anxiety while you have your own issues

This may never be seen or it may be tmi but . I was sent to a mental hospital not to long ago and it was terrible . The screams and restless nights were hell but humming this song helped me so much and was in ways the one thing that kept me sane . So thank you Cavetown 💛

Don't worry I was in the mental hospital too. I was originally in Dayton children's hospital because I was doing a sleep study. They thought it was epilepsy but I just have a stress disorder that takes form physically but anyway I was suicidal and I didn't think I was able to go home without doing anything to myself. I had covid so I had to stay in my room and not join the others there. I stayed for a week, but I had the best grippy sock vacation. I still have depression and got it genetically from my mom, but I'm engaged currently to the best woman ever. I'm trans but not fully and I'm also not straight at all. My dad doesn't even know about anything and I will take it to the grave (he's against the whole spectrum thing) my mom is totally fine with it and my dad is definitely not a nice person like at all, he used to hit me and both of my brothers for at least 10 years and has cheated on his wife (mother) twice maybe three times. I started the whole suicide thing 2-3 years ago and he was calming down after he saw my wrist but like a few months later it was worse. He kicked my middle brother out five times in his life and mom had to get him each time it was further away from the house. If either of us (me mostly) wasn't doing good at a football game, he would scream and hit us in the car. It was midget league football and middle school. He would also yell at me from the bleachers while I was on the sidelines. There are 8 people living here including my fiancee, and it's really loud during football season.

Lemon Boy is a representation of our inner childhood. As kids, we tend to see the world from a brighter perspective. That's why lemon boy always grows back like a weed because the narrator is still a child. Playing outside then it starts to rain? Fine, then play under the rain. It was simple back then.
But as we grow older we tend to get a grasp on reality. Truth is, the world is ugly. We start to get pressured by what society expects us to do and worry about things we can't control. Hence the lyrics, what if we run out of fertilizer, what if the clouds run out of rain, whales start to beach themselves, and tortoise shells tear away from their spine?
In the end, he just accepts Lemon Boy as a part of him. Not getting too attached to material things and living a simple life like Snufkin and little my. Appreciate the little things and always see the bright side in bad situations.
Also, I love how he starts with "Lemon Boy and me" and then it became "Lemon Boy and I" in the end. Like how we realize right vs wrong as we grow older but also become boring, formal adults.😂

I think this song is about him having some sort of mental illness or anxiety, and that is “lemon boy” and he is basically singing about how he got used to having “lemon boy” so he learned how to get along with it and the line “what it lemon boy don’t grow no longer” I think that since he lived with “lemon boy” for so long that he will miss it or something. Also that the line “Then his bitter sweet started to rub off on me, you’d think smelling like lemon zest would be pretty neat” was him saying that it started to affect him. I found this out a couple days ago and totally changed what I think while listening to this song.
