Somalia: The Forgotten Story | Al Jazeera World

  • Somalia's modern history is a tale of independence, prosperity and democracy in the 1960s, military dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s - followed by a desperate decline into civil war and chaos almost ever since.
    The effect of the war has been to scatter the Somali people in their millions to refugee camps and neighbouring countries - and in their hundreds of thousands to the UK, Canada and the United States.
    Somalia gained independence from Britain and Italy in 1960. It held free and fair elections and was ruled democratically from 1960 to 1969.
    Once labelled the "Switzerland of Africa", Somalia enjoyed almost a decade of democracy. The first elected president of Somalia, uniting the former British and Italian territories, was Adam Abdullah Osman who reigned for seven years. He was succeeded, freely and peacefully, by Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke.
    Sharmarke, however, was assassinated by one of his own bodyguards in 1969.
    Speaker of the Somali Parliament Mukhtar Mohamed Hussein took over, but his brief, six-day tenure was cut short by a military coup led by General Siad Barre, ending Somalia's period of democratic government.
    Whatever its faults - and there were many - Barre's 22-year rule effectively created modern Somalia, building one of Africa's strongest armies and massively improving the literacy of the population.
    Yet Barre, who gained the support of the US and the Soviet Union, the superpowers of the day, also dissolved parliament, suspended the constitution, banned political parties, arrested politicians and curbed press freedom.
    "From then, there was a downward trend. In everything. A disintegration. And every time things were going down, the military regime was becoming more brutal and more dictatorial," says Jama Mohamed Ghalib, a former Somali government minister.
    But when Barre launched the Ogaden war in 1977 to take the Somali majority region from Ethiopia, it provoked serious international opposition, including that of the Soviet Union which had once supported Barre but now sided with Ethiopia. The Somali army was forced to withdraw.
    But the other long-lasting outcome was civil war, with myriad competing factions and frequent intervention by foreign powers and neighbouring countries.
    In 2006, the Islamic Courts Union split into several factions, one of which was Al Shabab. The radical group still controls large parts of the south of the country today.

    It breaks my heart to see Somalia like this 😭💔as deeply love & respect Somalian people. Somalia is beatiful country with rich natural resources & hard working people, which i believe why some countries are interested in Somalia & interfering in its peace process. Somalia is not a failed State its just going through hardship & i do believe that they will UNITE & have PEACE for ever very soon. I do believe that we African countries are failing Somalia as we don't seems to help them in bringing peace in their country. Love from Eritrea😍✌👏

    • @aldoushuxley6080
      @aldoushuxley6080 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Somalis themselves are divided on the story. So many evil people injected their own narratives and ideas into us. This is part of the reason Somalia has stayed in its sad state. Foreign powers (mainly Arab gulf states like Saudi as well as Ethiopia) don’t want us to prosper again because it will affect their economy and political power.

    • @atti9369
      @atti9369 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@aldoushuxley6080-Somalian invasion of Ethiopia seems to mark the beginning of the end for Somalia. Somalians are their own worst enemy. No point blaming other countries while killing each other. Nevertheless the international community should help them to band illegal fishing in their water. with such a beautiful cost line the country should be thriving with tourism. How unfortunate to see a country with so much natural resources and huge potential disintegrated. What is wrong with Africans???? They never seems to learn.

    • @aldoushuxley6080
      @aldoushuxley6080 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      AT ti
      We’re not putting the entire blame on other countries. Obviously, Somalis themselves are largely to blame but we can’t ignore the role other countries played and continue to play in keeping the country unstable. The gulf Arab states use Somalia as a proxy state and have been caught smuggling money into the nation. Knowing that gulf states such as Saudi are terror-sponsorers, its very suspicious when they get caught meddling in our politics. For one, somalia is rich in resources that the gulf states love such as camels, coal, etc. Not only that, but Somalia has a large coastline so imagine how that would affect commerce in the region. It would lessen the geopolitical role of gulf Arab states in the region.
      Also, the US is currently bombing Somalia while they’re trying to rebuild and there are puppets engaged in shady businesses such as coal (which has greatly contributed to worsened droughts due to the cutting down of trees which in turn has lead to starvation as the livestock starve and the plants die). So it becomes a cycle.
      It’s not as simple as Africans “just learning” like you make it seem. It’s far more complicated.

      jamexxxxxxxx You are oversimplifying the issue. If Somalis are born to naturally be mentally challenged, then how did they develop all of their advanced civilizations? You clearly have no knowledge of Somalia’s history. The reason for its fall was caused by a socialist dictator. Before the fall in the 90s, Somalia was very prosperous and even defended their country from European powers for a very long time. Research how Britain and Italy colonized Somalia and you will find out the long struggle of the Brits and Italians to colonize the country. I believe Somali will one day stand and all the forces behind the collapse will be defeated, not by war, but by people accepting that only the Somalis can determine the destiny of their country. Alshaabab and all other militias who "protect" the people will have to let go of their grudge with other people and find a peaceful way to end the civil war.

Wipe out Al- Shabab, aid those who suffer from drought and most importantly put tribalism to a end!

      I'm so happy to see where our country is going. We see Al-Shabaab now retreating into the wilderness and very rural areas. They have been cut off from all points and are being pushed out. I think the main focus now should be to strengthen and closely integrate the Federal Member States and its respective forces, and then open talks with Hargeisa, Berbera, and Zeila, the rest of the cities in "Somaliland' just want to unite with their brothers and sisters.

      There is a lot of history behind the clans and the region before the colonial era. Each clan has a rich line of history that dates back centuries. You can teach yourself about Somalia’s history with the resources online.

      Believe me, only the most interesting part of our history is during colonization and postcolonialism. I believe that the European powers, mainly the British (since it was the largest empire in the world), put little spice for each of their colonies.

    It’s great that there are documentaries like this and there have been many of such done by people who are not African or from the diaspora but oh how I pray there will be more documentaries about Africa by people from Africa or the diaspora. What a game changer that will be

    Am from Uganda
    Uganda is a landlocked country but it is fighting hard to improve the livelihood of people
    Somalia has access to the see I believe if they manage their resources well they will grow into a middle income state

      As a neighbor country - Ethiopia - we know Somalis are very tough and resilient people. Nothing gets them down.
      They just keep coming up again and again and again. Admirable people.

    Wish Somalia gets neutral and prosperous again, this is what we common man can say and do(especially for foreign countries affairs).
