I think using an interpreter in a formal competition like this, is a must if you are not so confident enough with your level of proficiency in English. Or even more if you know you can express your thoughts with all clarity and substance if you use your native language (in herlene's case it is tagalog)
Because in this competition the real thing is not really how deep and high faluting your words are.
But how deep is your passion to do and accomplish your advocacy when you won the crown and how meaningful the impact will be to those who will recieve the blessings once you transpire your words into action, your advocacies.
Expressing your words properly and clearly will always depend on how well articulated your thoughts are in your mind and so in your words, then put it into actions once given the opportunity, like being crowned as the queen of all these queens. 😊
In ms. Herlene's case, I could see shes making a difference in her life and in the pageant world. And she was giving all she could. However, I could also see that she needs room for improvements on her speech/answers pa po. (but I beleive she could better it in the future 😊)
I hope next time when she join again (which I know she would) she will give more time and effort polishing her possible answers to the possible questions. Practice her ability to answer beauty pageant questions and so she could manage well her strength and assets in that area of the competition, and for sure if that honed in her, She can win the crown 👑 na 😊
Yung mga bashers diyan stop hating and just purely criticizing ms. Herlene. If you point out her flaws make sure you contribute something good naman for her improvements. If wala shut up nalang kayo. Your hates cannot help people's betterment. However your educated and well-mannered attitude somehow could make a difference if you utilize it for the good.

She was right in asking for an interpreter regardless of her lack of profiency in English. Using the Filipino language helps promote awareness of the Philippines worldwide. Ms. BUDOL IS A BEAUTIFUL HONEST PERSON WORTHY OF REPRESENTING THE PHILIPPINES IN THE INTERNATIONAL THEATER.

Thousands of International students enroll in Philippine schools to learn english for a couple of months. You had more than a year to learn to finesse your lackluster english proficiency (you do know to speak basic english, at least!) and yet you wasted your time doing other things instead of continually to self-improve. Majority of the Filipinos do speak english too. Why not represent majority of us instead of just a few?

Some if not most of the top 15 had trouble with the Q&A. Stage freight is very difficult to overcome. Most of the leaders in big companies encourage people to do things over and over again gaya ng mga athletes. They practice over and over again until they master their play. I worked in a hospital with doctors from Harvard yet they stutter and stammer when they are new presenting case studies. Kaya ang most of the beauty pageant winners were repeaters. Herlene is still young. Marami pa syang chances. Hasa hasa lang yan. But I think she needs to choose her priority whether beauty pageants or the entertainment career. Pwede niyang pagsabayin but we are just human. She will explode especially sa tindi ng bashing sa Pinas. Aside from all of these, I salute her authenticity. Sa mga youth today, they are ashamed of their poor beginnings. Her life story is very endearing, actually a Cinderella story. And because of her guts, she succeeded! Pero above all, dahil maka Diyos sya. She is blessed to be raised by her grandparents. And I hope she would also be a blessing to others not only her family and relatives.Sana lahat tayo mag angat ng kapwa tao not to bring down anyone. Respetuhan lang. Wala namang nagbash sakanya dahil lang gumamit ng intrepreter. Makikita mo naman talaga kung may skill ba siya q&a which ke not a problem naman kase pwede pa siya maghasa at sumali ng sumali. The reason why Latinas in beauty contests use interpreters is because they are never educated in English in their schools. But in the Philippines, English is our medium of instruction. So, if somebody like Herlene Budol, a college graduate, cannot speak English and cannot fully understand questions in English, then we ask if there's something wrong with our educational system. Or, is there something wrong with Budol's ability to learn?

C Marian Rivera college Graduate din pero hindi Marunong mag English. . Sabi nga ng Anak ko Teacher niya hindi rin makapagsalita ng English noong kausapin ng parent ng classmate niya. Marami talaga students ngayon na pumapasa kahit di gaano Marunong magbasa sa High school. kaya kapag nag graduate ng college Hirap umintindi ng English kahit nga mga Pulis ganon din.
The medium of instruction in the Philippines is mostly done in english but it is not Filipino’s first language. Europeans also learn English as second language but to use their first or native language in international stage is not frowned upon. I think there is nothing wrong about it, using your 1st language and hiring an interpreter.
Reason bakit sila gumagamit ng interpreter sa international pageant, para hindi na nila intindihin yung mga gagamitin nilang words para yung sagot nalang ang intindihin nila at hindi yung kung ano ba sa English to kung ano ba sa English yan. Para yung sagot dirediretso na at may kumpyansa.

It's okay to use an interpreter. Her decision is really right; however, it's kinda disappointing that she still wasn't able to elaborate her answer despite of using the language that she's comfortable with. In beauty pageants, language is not an issue, judges are looking on how the candidate will deliver her answer. It's on how they elaborate their thoughts and how confident they communicate in front of many people. The ability to speak the English language is just a plus but not a requirement; what matters is that you can deliver your message properly which Harlene and the other candidates need to learn.

Beauty pageants are NOT just for beauty and confidence.. It's more on how she can communicate/express her thoughts well so that people can clearly understand her and her advocacy. She will get there soon! Just continue with that determination.
But wait - why was she frowning the whole time, especially during the.announcement of winners? She looked like she was disappointed she won Ms. Grand Tourism? She shudn't be sad coz she will still represent the country, altho for me, there are other candidates that cud've won, to be honest.. If she hadn't won, it's not even a bad thing coz that means, Herlene can have more time to practice her comm skills and better herself.
Since she won Ms. Grand Tourism, that wud mean she's gonna be facing another intense pressure to keep up with the people's expectations. I feel sorry for Herlene being subjected to so much online bullying and harassment.

I don't understand why you assumed that I was implying that having an interpreter is wrong. Lol.
My point is - whether she's joining a beauty pageant or just in normal life, being able to communicate well (regardless if it's in tagalog or english) will actually make her more confident when talking to people. Given that she is not just a celebrity, but also an influencer, and now a representative of a country. Yes, she can speak a bit of English, but she needs to practice more to really express her thoughts coz tbh, I can see that she really is passionate about her beliefs, it's just that she is having a hard time expressing them, even in Tagalog..
Getting better and improving one's comm skills and personality are not just for joining beauty pageants... It's a LIFELONG SKILL that she can treasure and can empower her to overcome her insecurities, and make meaningful connections with people around the world. Herlene is smart and she has a heart.. But she needs the right people to help her organize her thoughts and unleash her potential.. And she needs TIME & A LOT OF PRACTICE to do that.
