"Sing" was originally written in 1971 for the children's telly programme Sesame Street. The song gained mainstream popularity when recorded by The Carpenters, who relieved Big Bird'of his duty and took it to the top of the US adult contemporary chart.
Karen quoted that Sing was a fun and easy song to sing. She said that she loved performing the song because she loved seeing the children's facial expressions. A beautiful woman with true class.🌹
"Sing" is a 1971 song written by Joe Raposo for the children's television show Sesame Street as its signature song. Karen Carpenter sang lead vocals, with backing vocals by herself, Richard and the Jimmy Joyce Children's Choir. Keyboards were played by Richard, bass by Joe Osborn, drums by Karen and recorders by Tom Scott
Check out their 1974 Budokan concert in Japan, Karen sings "Sing" in Japanese. If you want to see her drumming skills, watch their cover of "Help" in the same concert.
There's another version of this, with video, that they did in Japan in front of a live audience. You're right she was often not the happiest person, but she's singing *in Japanese* with a bunch of Japanese schoolchildren in the background providing the chorus, and her face lights up like a Christmas tree. It's the same song, but in Japanese and really cool.
"Sing" is a 1971 song written by Joe Raposo for the children's television show Sesame Street as its signature song. In 1973, it gained popularity when performed by Carpenters, a #3 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
in japan the carpenters released a live album and in concert she sang this song in japanese. and had a childrens choir on stage with them/ they did this also in other countries with local children singing with them
You probably heard the song on Sesame Street. The first time I heard this song on the radio, I was on my way to my girlfriend's house. When the kids started singing la, la, la, la, I started singing with them. I ended up passing my girlfriend's house, as I kept singing la, la, la, with the kid singers. Yeah, it made me forget where I was headed. To this day, 45 years later, I still sing the la, la, la, la when I hear this song.
If this song sounds familiar, it may be because it used to be one of the signature songs for Sesame Street. It was written by one of the Sesame Street staff songwriters and it was sung on the show in multiple languages. The Carpenters version of this song became a huge hit, peaking at #3 in the US. It became an even bigger hit in Japan, peaking at #1. There is a clip of the Carpenters performing this song live in Japan (with Karen singing it in Japanese!) and joined onstage by a Japanese children's choir to sing backup.
Thanks for this - your reactions are priceless. Personal note - The Carpenters came to my small town of New Castle, IN in 1974 (I believe) and performed at the high school fieldhouse. My first concert ever, and they had notified choir teachers around the county ahead of time to have about two dozen local children rehearse this song so they could sing along, onstage, with Karen. I didn't get chosen but one of my best friends did. What a thrill for that small midwestern town. I've always believed Karen had the most beautiful voice in popular music, so thank you for the ride down Memory Lane.
I don’t know who wouldn’t enjoy your reactions. You are so sweet and vulnerable. You make this old grandpa smile and cry at the same time. Keep up the good work.
In their live concerts, the local elementary choir kids got to be onstage and sing it with them....you never knew what might happen, but all the ones I saw sang it with no mistakes. Was such fun and Karen seemed to enjoy those kids so much.
When they toured across the US & overseas they reached out to local communities & had their local children’s choir go on stage to sing that part. They were amazing!
So... back in the day, still reeling from the conflicts of Vietnam... The world was so full of issues... drugs, sex, etc.. The Carpenters were a escape...A place you could go to forget about life awhile and be happy... Great reaction. Thank you. 😊
Young lady, you are so adorable inside and out! It's SO nice to see someone in this generation becoming as big a fan as I was at around 10. I was SO EXCITED when I saw the title. I was just waiting to see your face when those kids came in and you didn't disappoint! Don't ever change for ANYONE! ❤❤ (And keep those Carpenters' songs coming)
There's no surprise that you love this song. It's perfect for your personality. Just like the song, you are so positive in your reactions. I'm sure you're a wonderful person in real life and I hope you continue to remain so positive and continue to enjoy music because I know how much happiness music brings to my life. I wish you nothing but the best, Angela!
I cry every time i hear karens voice what a beautiful soul she was and we where honored that she was gracious enough to share her talents thank you karen .
I was driving to my girlfriend's house to pick her up for a date, when this song came on the radio. When the kids started signing la, la, la..... I joined in and kept on driving past my girlfriend's house singing with the la, la, la, la..... part. Love your reactions to Karen's voice. 50 years later, her voice still touches my heart. For pleasure, you should check out her singing this song in Japanese, when they are doing their concert in Tokyo. Karen sings the entire song in Japanese, and she's signing with a children's Japanese choir. It's beautiful. You may have heard this on Sesame Street when you were a child. This song was featured on the show a few times. I remember hearing it when my children were watching It.
Fantastic song takes me back to the 70s great arrangement from Richard Carpenter fantastic vocals Karen Carpenter reminds me of sesame Street rest in peace Karen Carpenter
Your an amazingly sensitive & positive good person. Every time Karen Carpenter starts to sing your dimples light up those cherub cheekbones. Keep it up. She was the bomb when I was a kid. Stuff still kills me every time and your reviews are spot on. (By the way, ranked #4 best female vocalist of all time) # great taste
Interestingly this style of children’s arrangement was popular in the early 70’s like “Candy Man and “I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing”(Coke Christmas commercials). Very uplifting stuff…
If you are old enough, we used to do many things in elementary school. One was music, you learned to play a recorder and to sing. This was one of the songs they taught you to sing with.
One of the children's voices in the choir is actually Karen. She sang a guide vocal in a high voice so that when the kids came in to record their part, they could sing along with Karen's voice. You used to be able to hear Karen's isolated vocal without music here on YT, but it seems to have been removed.
I used to sing this in my Jr. High choir. If you want to hear some beautiful hormonies and serious bass, and since it's the Christmas season, check out Home Free "Do You Hear What I Hear," "O Holy Night," and for fun, "Full Of Cheer."
Another nice reaction DayOne. Here are a few not-so-well-known Carpenters' jewels for you to try. They're all somewhere here on YT, at least on audio: 'One Love', 'A Place to Hide Away', and 'Crescent Noon'. There are other favourites, but the last mentioned is a true tour-de-force. If I were asked to choose the best intro to the blessed miracle that was Karen's voice, this is the one I would choose.
Great song Awesome she should be in Rock n Roll Hall of Fame No Doubt. When is she getting in it's long Over Due OMG. How come she's not there yet it's not normal with her brother Richard.
We were meant for joy, love, happiness, but we were also made to learn how to be more patient, loving, and caring, for it's hard for us. Songs like this, and singers like Karen are the great reminders of our eternal purpose: la la la la la, la la la la, la la la, la la la la la la love
I’m enjoying these reaction videos, partly because you’re listening to a lot of my type of music but also because of your positive approach to what appears to be new music to you. Well done. I reckon 10k+ subscribers by the end of the year. Cheers.
You asked whether Karen was the drummer on all their songs. When they first started out Karen was the only drummer for the group. As they got more popular Richard started worrying about the fact that Karen at 5'4 literally disappeared behind the drum kit. Karen saw herself as a drummer not a singer. But finally Richard convinced her that at least on the ballads which were the slow sad songs that they got most recognition for she would come out front and sing. Also Karen's drumming style was perfected in front of live audiences which is a louder type of drumming then you would use in the studio. She was a great studio drummer but on a lot of the master recordings that you're playing the drummer was a really really legendary guy named Hal Blaine. And often they would both play. There is a clip on TH-cam- several of them as a matter of fact look up Karen Carpenter drummer. Richard wrote a song about the early days in their childhood when he was experimenting around with overdubbing on a tape recorder and this is when he was maybe seven or eight years old, and Karen wanted to do something and it turns out that she wanted to drum so the parents bought her a drum set. And Richard wrote a whole song about that. But in this video that's on TH-cam it shows Karen running back and forth between all these different types of drum and percussion instruments cause she could also play the glockenspiel and bass and other instruments. As great a singer as she was she was not just a singer. And about "Sing", one cool thing about this song is that they always performed it in their live concerts and in every town that they played they would make arrangements beforehand to find a local children's choir and they would bring them in have them backstage and then when it came time to perform sing they would bring them out. That had to be a thrill for a bunch of kids.
Gratz on 3k! I always think of my mom now when I hear this song. The Carpenters were about as close as she got to listening to contemporary music back then. She enjoyed singing a lot, especially at church, and when she passed away several years ago, I put together some of her favorite songs to play after the memorial service, starting with this one. "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" is a popular Billy Joel song, and I remember you saying you like the saxophone so when you get around to checking that one out, look for the one from his 2008 concert at Shea Stadium. You might also like David Sanborn if you aren't familiar with him yet, "Maputo" is a good song to start with.
You always deliver! Here's one I've not seen any reactions to and I've seen alot. Sweet, Sweet Smile. Talk about a mood changer. Please give it a try. Do the one uploaded by x queen rings Karen's pounding those drums and smiling from ear to ear. See you on the next one and 2,000 is just the beginning.

What you said about how music can affect folks is so true. That's why one of my favorite lines from a song is "Thanks for the Joy that you've given me" in Dobie Gray's Drift away, which is way at the top of my favorites list. I've always loved the Carpenters. My sisters and I (I have 5) used to sit in front of the speakers on our old console stereo and sing this song at the top of our lungs. LOVE IT!
You are SO ADORABLE and genuine! Love your reactions to discovering the greatest female voice of all time...Karen Carpenter.
You, my dear, are a breath of fresh air! Keep that effervescence and 3000 will be 300,000 before you know it! Keep reaching for the top!
Couldn't agree more John
Absolutely John, this young lady IS a breath of fresh air.

Love your videos. I remember like it was yesterday singing this song in concert with the carpenters in 1973 with our 6th grade children's choir
This is one of my favorites for the same reason. This is often forgotten or overlooked.

What Awesome Incredible Beautiful outstanding Voice Omg. Angela I agree That Voice lol omg
I sang this in chorus in 7th grade. It would stick in your head for hours after rehearsals. You'd be singing a song. I agree it's a cute song.
Your an amazingly sensitive & positive good person. Every time Karen Carpenter starts to sing your dimples light up those cherub cheekbones. Keep it up. She was the bomb when I was a kid. Karen sang in the background as well using her falsetto voice so she would blend in with the Jimmy Joyce Children's Choir.
I'm also a shower Grammy winner. 😂🤣
Also, a very huge band from the 70's Three dog night, Old fashioned love song...
Highly concur!!!
Whoa, it's been so long since I heard this. I should have known the Carpenters. YES!
This is the ultimate happy song that make everyone feel good. The magical voice of Karen Carpenter.
Interestingly this style of children’s arrangement was popular in the early 70’s like “Candy Man and “I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing”(Coke Christmas commercials). Very uplifting stuff…
Disney missed the greatest Princess voice ever.
This brings back so many memories, thank you for reacting to this song.
Song was used on Sesame Street.
The purity of this song is comforting compared to the filth we get today.
damn! we sang this in elementary school back in the early 70s!! memories indeed!
This song can change the world, LOL!
Carpenters magic.
We sang this song when I was in the school choir back in 1979. It always brought the house down where ever we performed.

In the 70’s in Grade school music class this was a staple for singing as a group

Please to Top of The World (The Carpenters). One of my faves.
Good vibes music. How can you not smile, be happy, or sing along? Well, knowing she left us way too soon brings a tear to my eyes.
She sang this with kids in japanese in Japan. Live. Amazing. It’s here on youtube.
Pretty extraordinary.
