      Pluto should have been grandfathered in, it has always been referred to as a planet ever since it's discovery. I have to admit that I never realized how small it is.

    • @totalbrainfail1812

      But it's not. It's a kuiper belt object. It hasn't met the final criteria to become a planet. But just think. As a planet, Pluto would be the smallest, as a kuiper belt object or a dwarf planet, it's the largest!

    When I was a kid my sister and I made 2 time capsules. They were basically 2 glass coffee jars filled with notes based on our observation of the world/life. I remember adding a note that said 'there are 9 planets in the solar system'. I was thinking that when it was found, there would probably be several more. I never expected that there would be less.

      From the description, if space suits were advanced enough one day, Pluto would be really fascinating to walk on. Fields upon fields of frozen nitrogen, and a tiny fraction of the gravity of earth. With the height you could jump and the small size of the planet, it wouldn't take long to trek across.

    I can certainly understand the sentiment. Pluto was the little one we all loved, the oddball, the one that kept the air of mystery until the 21st century, and even now we have more questions than answers! However, there had to be a cutoff point, and Pluto didn't make the cut. This was not the first time however that an astronomical body was reclassified from planet to something else.
    Found on Jan 1st 1801, Ceres was believed to be the proof Bode's Law, a coincidental arrangement based on the known planets' average distances, was an actual thing. It was dubbed a planet, although initial observations led some to believe it was a comet, much like Uranus 20 years prior. However, as more and more objects in the vicinity of Ceres were discovered, it became apparent that Ceres was merely the biggest of a new class; asteroids, and the ones discovered lost their planet status. The IAU decision in 2006 however gave Ceres some of its' former glory, and it became the nearest dwarf planet.

    • @Jellyman1129
      @Jellyman1129 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s a lie! Ceres was demoted because we thought it wasn’t round, along with Vesta, Pallas, and Juno. The IAU just got lazy and didn’t feel like adding more planets.

      But all of you who want Pluto need to also know that in that case, Eris at the very least is a planet, since it is actually bigger then Pluto. And if we go down that road, and through away the scientific definition of a planet, just so Pluto can once more be one, what stops us from saying Ceres is a planet?? And then soon we have a hundred planets, and we will debate if a non-round object can also be a planet. The fact is, Pluto does not satisfy the qualifications to be a planet, end of story!!

Looking back on it though, it's a fascinating world, and it has helped to change our understanding of our Solar System and the Universe. It doesn't worry me that Pluto is now a dwarf planet.

      It's a shame they demoted Pluto rather than adding Eris which might have captured public interest. Earth couldn't clear at that distance from the sun either. It would have to be humongous. Boring now. Maybe be a certain size OR able to clear.

    I think Pluto has a pivotal role in the order of things and perhaps just as important as the other planets, without Pluto the effects to the Earth would be immediate and somewhat catastrophic

    • @matthewtheobald1231
      @matthewtheobald1231 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Then what does it orbit?

    • @dekippiesip
      @dekippiesip 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Ninfreak95 it’s also a huge orbit, I doubt Earth could ‘clean’ it’s orbit if it where at that distance to the sun. Arguably we haven’t cleared our orbit either, just ask the dinosaurs.
      I think the definition should be based on internal properties rather than orbital ones. Like giving a minimaal radius or mass, that would make more sense.

    If you read recent news Pluto has become a planet again, on top of that NASA made a new category of planets called hyper planets which Pluto is the first member, looks like NASA gave Pluto some love xP

    • @aurora7554
      @aurora7554 5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      I read your comment and quickly did some research. Unfortunately, I cannot find any articles talking about anything related to hyper planets. Except for one, but the article stated that it's an April Fool's joke.
      Another article says that NASA has published a manifesto that proposes a new definition of a planet, and if it holds, it will instantly add more than 100 new planets to our Solar System, including Pluto and our very own Moon. (btw NASA can't really make a new category of the planet out of nowhere, it has to be approved by the IAU)
      And according to Fox News, the IAU said there hasn’t yet been a formal call or proposal for Pluto to be reclassified as a planet.
      I seriously can't trust news article these days. Oddly enough, all my physics teachers haven't heard anything about it.

    For me, Pluto remains a true planet.
    In Germany, we learned at school a mnemotechnic verse. I learned 2003/2004. The initial letters of each word marked one planet at a time, in the exact right order based on the distance to the sun, starting with the shortest distance. Without Pluto, it doesn‘t make sense anymore, I hate it. :-D
    The sentence was:
    Mein Vater erklärt mir jeden Sonntag unsere neun Planeten.
    translated:
    My father explains me about our nine planets every Sunday.
    Mein (my) - Mercury
    Vater (father) - Venus
    Erklärt (explains) - Earth
    Mir (me) - Mars
    Jeden (every) - Jupiter
    Sonntag (Sunday) - Saturn
    Unsere (our) - Uranus
    Neun (nine) - Neptune
    Planeten - Pluto
