    This appears almost identical to the machine I bought new in '83 or '84 labeled as the "Olympia Electronic Compact". The only difference I can see is that I didn't have the KB2 switch.
    I eventually pretty much wore it out. After a few years, the spacing started to get a bit loose. If I tried to erase a character, the second strike never quite covered the original strike.
    One fun feature of this machine is that it had a small keystroke buffer, and if you were typing fast, it was always amusing to hear the machine type the last few letters of the paragraph after you were on to the next one.
    The machine felt cheesy from day one, but it was what I could afford, and it was light - important as it had to travel to and fro from college with me. I could live with the large footprint. The feel of the keys was pretty bad - it really wasn't a particularly nice typing experience. But it got the job done for me for many years. In truth, though, I don't miss it.

    Hey Joe, I recently acquired a report electronic with a manual, the manual is dated 1983.

    Hey Joe, Informative video.... I was trained by the manufacture on these Nakajima typewriters. We distributed the Swintec 1146 ( or 1186 / 8000 )
    The ribbon drive train needs to be flush & checked for binds, if that doesn't fix the problem, which was actually was happening @ 14:58 , then the ribbon stepping motor is failing. There was a replacement motor for these early models that came with weak motor. When that motor gets "out of time" it resets both daisy & ribbon motors. Those stepping motors don't have any internal feedback sensors, they solely go from home position & count steps. Olympia did make their own electronic typewriters call the Startype. For test print: Hold down Mar Rel (margin release) while turning unit on, Typewriter will print every letter & do a test correction. I'm still a Swintec/Nakajima dealer........

      Very cool info! Knock on wood, but thus far the machine has performed flawlessly after I applied more control cleaner to the motors. Perhaps it'll fail down the road, we'll see. Are new motors available?
      Thanks for the insight on the test print mode, I'll try that.
      Do you have print wheels available for these machines? I'd like to try a few different fonts.

      Haven't seen any motors for decades, Just cleaning the moving parts will help it. I don't have many print wheels, I liquidated them when I downsized
      10 years ago, I had 100's. It is a very common print wheel, might be the most common ever, e-bay should be full of them, but might have to use different search words because like yours has "Olympia" on wheel, it fits all those nakajima's like swintec, royal, olivetti, etc.
      Besides Electronic IBM, those are my favorite electronic typewriter ever, bigger versions are Swintec 8011/8012/8014 & 8016 is the best

    Never saw the "KB2" before on any machine! That's why I LOVE watching your videos. They're ALWAYS educational. (Typewriters are so much like automobiles in their standard design but with infinite variations.)

    As to servicing this typewriter - I suspect that people just threw them out if they broke. I think I paid about $300, maybe a little less, and only a few years later, the much more feature rich machines were out anyway. Mine never did break - it just got looser as the years went by.

    I have one of these with the same problem of some keys not responding. Instead of using alcohol, would compressed air help to free the keys that aren't responding?

    • @Joe_VanCleave
      @Joe_VanCleave  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There may be grunge under the keys that needs dissolving, that compressed air may not affect. But it's worth trying first.

    So you cleaned the keyboard circuit with? What's it cost to ink up and keep it rolling? Ink and daisy wheels are generic to this? I know where one is that has same keyboard issues you describe. And one certainly needs a manual to figure functions out....

    • @Joe_VanCleave
      @Joe_VanCleave  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I used 91% isopropyl alcohol followed by electrical contact cleaner to clean the keyboard contacts. For ribbon cartridges contact Ribbons Unlimited and look up the model name.

      @@Joe_VanCleave Thanks! That’s a tough search, as all the other Report and Reporter models come up. I’m in, but am going to start with a Nakajima AE-580 first.

    Nice video Joe, so is it a keeper ?

    • @Joe_VanCleave
      @Joe_VanCleave  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think so; or, if I forward-gifted it to someone else, would free up space for that brand-spanking-new Swintek clear-bodied prison typewriter that I've wanted to get. For "research" purposes, of course. :)

      Sounds like a good idea Joe, have you tracked down a Swintek ?
