    I have both the SIG 716 and the SIG 516G2. Both rifles have been extremely reliable and they are among my favorite rifles in my collection. I've always liked these guns and one day would like to own the Caracal 816, HK 416 and SIG MCX Spear and Spear LT's as well.

    Excellent review! It bring into propectives on the evolutions of H&K 416 to Sig 516 then to the Caracal 816! Very nice you brought out the technical improvements as the evolution progressed! I have had arguments with people telling how great the H&K416 compare to Sig Sauer 516, my side was the Sig is an improved version of 416 design by same guy Chris Sirous!
    Being a thirty years LE officer I have used H&K USP pistols and MP5 excellent guns but their availability of parts, support and cost is ridiculous with proprietary parts which is what H&K does which was well brought out in your video! I've have used Sig Sauer P Series, MPX and P320 they are also premium guns but Sig is more responsive, reasonable with support,cost, parts availability. I had never handle a Caracal 816 so I am unfamilar with it, but do believe it is final evolution and probably the best!

    I never understood the need for gas rings on a piston, considering the need to use less gas until you mentioned thermal signature..Excellent review..

    • @SmallArmsSolutions
      @SmallArmsSolutions  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

      Thae gas rings seal the expansion chamber so the system requires far less gas to operate. Thus less recoil. Without rings, you have to heavily over gas due to gas leaking around the sides of the piston. The thermal signature is caused on the HK because it pushes the gas out the front of the gas block giving off the signature. The Sig and Caracal vent under the handguard so there is no visible thermal signature.

    Here's the thing, everyone likes to hate on the 416, but if not for the 416 the external piston "AR" wouldn't be a thing. At least not to the degree it is now. Additionally when the 416 came on the scene the AR platform as we know it today didn't really exist, and I think to that end the 416 really drove the endurance/durability race that went on for many years after its introduction. The 516/816 are really just exercises in lessons learned, well executed lessons to be sure.

      It is a different way to accomplish the same task. External pistons biggest plus is the Over the Beach conditions as well as short barrel guns. They are less gassy when using baffled suppressors. The newer reverse flow cans, they make this negligible. For normal use, there is absolutely nothing wrong with internal piston. Range guns, yo cant go wrong either way.

  • @danielpapale6524
    @danielpapale6524 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I wouldn't say that Sig and Caracal necessarily sought out exclusively to improve the 416 with their changes so much as to work around the existing intellectual property of HK while delivering a piston gun, having said that, the two things are not mutually exclusive either. Parts commonality with the standard AR platforms accomplishes that as well as giving the benefits of better supply logistics, but on occasion those proprietary parts are, inherently, a better design. When that happens a decision has to be made about what is more important. Incidentally there's nothing inherently wrong about having to work around your previous intellectual property, a strong case could be made that this is why John Moses Browning's designs are as vast, and cover as many different ways of approaching a problem as they do. I have a 11.5" 816 and while I'm not a huge piston AR guy, it is by far my favorite so I'm not knocking either Caracal or Sig.

    • @SmallArmsSolutions
      @SmallArmsSolutions  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Not at all. Had nothing to do with intellectual property. It was to make a better gun. If you want to talk about IP, nearly every gun out there uses AR18 design. The 416 was the starting point, examination of strengths and weaknesses. Use that info to build a better gun.

    As a by-stander , no dog in the game and a casual watcher of the channel, it seems like you have a bit of a "dislike" (nothing wrong with it) to the 416. It's not a perfect rifle by any mean, but given the circumstances of when/where it was introduced, it is still a rifle that punch above its weight and have aged rather nicely. Also, if you read more into the "MR" line of HK (stands for match rifle) and how the German export laws works, i think you probably would have a slightly different look on why the civilian market of HK is that way. Not saying that HK doesn't have any fault here but people loves to bash the 416 without all of the context behind why/how HK does things a lot of the time.

    • @SmallArmsSolutions

      @@SmallArmsSolutions Oh I'm not saying that you are doing anybody by taking favors or anything. I tend to watch your takes on things because I know you don't do others manufacturers favors. But just want to note that sometime the way you voice your opinions make it seems like you have a bias against it. Stuffs like why the MR doesn't have chrome lined barrel or why it has that weird FA-blocking cut tabs, are all parts of how HK works around the german export laws for "weapons of war" rather than because they hate customers and want them to have lesser product or something. I felt like that is a very important context to note when it comes to civilian product from HK.

    • @IWSFODD
      @IWSFODD 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@SmallArmsSolutions I don't think that they are allowed to make those blanks (while in US) up to the specs of the 416 for an MR anyway - part of the export law thing iirc (while they can do that for the M27 because it is for the government). I don't think anybody within the HK-fan-circle really like it either, but that is the game that we have to play with German-based manufacturer (which makes me wonder if that is part of the reason why Sig moved out from Germany and to US). It's the necessary context that I feel like more people should know, not just "we make thing worse because we hate you ... etc". They over-engineered a requirement, some people love it, some people hates it and that's fair game imo.

    • @SmallArmsSolutions
      @SmallArmsSolutions  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      They certainly can. The machines are from Germany and they are programmed by HI engineers. Same thing. Glock does the same. Glock USA uses Austrian machines, programmed by Austrian engineers and all the materials come from Austria. HK USA made a decision like Colt did back in 1992 to make changes to Mae their weapons not comparable with selective fire component’s. It has nothing to do with importation. If the MR556 was a German made gun completely it would be non importable due to the ban. However if parts are sent and the determined number of parts are made in the US, they can build the guns in the US with no restrictions. You can import barrel blanks into the US. KAC for years used Diemaco/Colt Canada CHF blanks and turned them in the US. HK, like many other companies decides whether they will upgrade their operation to the newest configuration for commercial sales. Colt has ambi bolt catch/release they dont offer on the commercial guns. They have many updates that have never been made for commercial guns. HK is full within their power to change out to updated forging, import the ambi parts and get the machines programmed to produce the new lowers for the commercial market. They choose no. People still pay top dollar for the outdated version so why bother? But this is not uncommon with any manufacturer. Colt took nearly a decade to release the ambi lower to the commercial market. They offered it to LE and Military. Colt offers external piston guns to military and LE but not commercial. Companies decide how they feel about the commercial market. Some make a change (like LMT, LWRCI, SIG) across the board. Some separate their markets and decide what they will offer.

      The same engineers. Not copied. Evolved to the next level. Caracal can offer chrome or nitride barrel as Sig does depending on what the customer wants. Caracal made mods to the gas system as well as the buffer as well. Incremental but still mechanical improvements. The MR556 was used because the actual 416 is not commercially available. That’s all you can get as a mere civilian. Caracal I believe has some advantages with the changes in buffer and gas system. Enough for me to prefer the Caracal . I own all three of those rifles. @@zaca952I never understood how HK would charge so much for firearms such as the MP5 which was built on the delayed blowback system. This system was developed as a simpler system to the long stroke gas piston. Plus, the MP5 is made of stampings. I'm not in military procurement so I have no idea what HK sells its firearms to government agencies but I do know FN sells M4s to the US Army for around $600. 416s run around $2,800 on the civilian market as a lower quality version. We are talking about quadruple the price. That is outlandish in my opinion.

If you want to do ANYTHING else, it stops being competitive.
      KEEP IN MIND, you can get MR556 uppers for around $1800-1900 when the yearly imports are still somewhat freshly arrived. Those come with the tungsten powder buffer, buffer spring, BCG, CH too.

The newer “Golden guns” don’t do this, but the older HK416D’s do. The only suppressor that didn’t have this issue was the KAC NT4, and that was just too heavy. PWS makes a piston rifle with a non proprietary upper AR15 reciewer.
    HK416 are horribly heavy for todays standards.
    Some of their overengineered parts are actually good upgrades for the AR15/M4 platform but in general.
    You can built an AR15 that can run circles around the HK416 for considerably less money.
    I did 2 duty tours to afghan with the USP 9mm pistol and they worked nomatter how much abruse they were subjected to and The old G3 was okay.

That misleading article led troops to believe their weapon was inferior and cause them unjustly to loose confidence in their primary weapon. I wrote a rebuttal to Military Times on that article giving factual information on the status of the M4. HK wanted to displace the M4 and bring in their 416. They knew the only way they could do it was to cause a stir that the Army had a poor weapon, open up a new product RFQ and the 416 would be there to save the day. Colt, kept quite through all this thinking they were taking the high road which in fact, their silence more so proved they were quilts of what HK was claiming against their product. Was a tuff time in the industry.
