- A video presentation of Dublin in it's 1,000th year in 1988.
A video directed & produced by Michael Mooney (my late father) & sponsored by Philips Electronics Ireland to showcase their new 'VidiWall' technology. It was narrated by a man named Lar Redmond and the soundtrack was composed by two gentleman named Paul Murphy & Barry Grace (Ear Two Ear). Photographic work was done by Arthur Browne. Other credits follow the video at the end.
It was shown in St. Andrew's Church on St. Andrew's Street, Dublin 2 for some months to celebrate Dublin's millennium status. It was a very popular tourist attraction.
Dublin was a very different city in 1988. Pay particular notice to the differences in the helicopter aerial footage at the beginning of the video of Dublin's Docklands from the Dublin we know in 2012. It brings very nostalgic feelings for me and I hope it does for you too!
My father was very proud of his hard work to make this video, as were his wife & children. I hope it'll be a fun video for you to watch now.

The Dublin I loved so well...I must admit I weep now going into the city!!
Spent the first part of my life 0-40 in Dublin and now 40-77 in Australia but my heart is still in Dublin. Went back last year and spent many days just wandering around the city. It has changed greatly but is still the same in so many ways. It is still "the town I loved so well"!
I was born in holles street hospital in 1988 I miss Dublin so much my mam used to work beside guinness factory in births deaths and marriages in task force it's the yellow building I remember as a young child ( ST. Stephens or st. James ) I'm sure now it's all changed names by now. Now it's HSE. My dad worked in knocklyon as primary school teacher. I went to loreto primary school in rathfarnham and my brother went to de la Salle in churchtown ( I was raised in churchtown). Anyway I left Dublin in 2000 and live in Spain. I miss Dublin!!! Haven't been home to Ireland in 10 years!!!!
I left in 1988 - I still have the Millennium 50p in my pocket.
Of the same trousers as well..it must be in tatters just like the goverment of the day...

I left Ireland more than 30 years ago. I was borm and livend in DUblin and remember the Guinness boats on the Liffey and horse drawn carts as well. You brought back fond memories and I am looking forward to coming back this year. I lived almost 10 years in St. Mary's Hospital in the Phoenix Park (my Dad was the Medical Director) and I walked every inch of the park. Thank you for the nice memories

Thanks for a most memorable walk through the Dublin I grew up in . How I miss it,wish I could afford to retire there,not so much the newer parts,but auld Dublin,the Dublin of Behan ,kava agh et al,and to hear Ronnie’s account is as musical as his ballads. TEMPEST FUGIT☘️🤟

Just watched this on "Dublin down memory lane" FB page.. Great video, very proud man of his city as all us Dubs should be.
I'm forever grateful to the uploader for sharing such a special video. My heart bursts with pride when I watch it and I must have watched it at least 10 times this week. The fantastic stills, video shots, quirky but mostly beautiful accompanying music and above all the effortlessly flowing and poetic narration by a true Liberties Dub bring this together. He gives a perfect example of why us Irish have a grasp of the English language like no other. There are so many wicked and witty lines. I'm sure any true Dub watching the last few minutes of this and hearing the lines "in my Father's house there are many mansions, live and let live, there is room for us all in heaven, says Dublin and so say I - her son!", while listening to that beautiful piece of music, uileann pipes and all, watching shots of the sun setting out over the Phoenix park. Truly heaven, instills special memories of a carefree childhood. Thanks whoever you are!

That year for me was all about Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Beastie Boys, Skateboards, Girls and sneaking into town on the Dart when I was only meant to be down in Monkstown.

There were about 62 babies born on Jan 1 1988. They were presented to the Lord Mayor during the summer at an event at the Mansion House. Each baby was give a replica Viking ring in silver to commemorate the day.

The gasometer! I took some pics of it in 1993 just before it was dismantled. Glad I did. the area had a dilapidated beauty back then, on the eve of the economic boom and the redevelopment of the docklands.
Really enjoyed this, irish history at it's best, even seen my old house near the end.

Most enjoyable film of Dublin.
Excellent stuff, Michael Mooney and Lar Redmond have left us a powerful piece about our capital city. As a Tour Guide for the past 4 years including an OPW stint in Kilmainham Jail, I visit these places everyday with people from all over the world and them tell our story, the narrative of this piece is powerful, I will be updating my presentation.....Dublin is Dublin, end of Story.....Well done Philips...BTW is Lar Redmond still alive?

It's a very different place these days, good in many ways and bad in so many other. Very commercialised and homogenised like any other Eurpoean city.

Good video but I don't agree on Nelsons Pillar. I'm a Dub and I heard many Dubs 'delira' that the Pillar was gone.
Berkeley Road St Peters Church at 4.07,accross from Dalymount Park,home of Irish soccer and Dublin's best club Bohemians FC.

Looking at this from Manchester U.K. where I’ve lived for 23 years and where I still have extended family in Ireland, little did we know back then that our country was doomed by corruption of all kinds that was lurking behind the scenes since 1916 & 1922 and yet now, by comparison, we are facing far greater enemies that we have ever faced at any point in recorded history aimed at our total destruction - chances were missed back then, as there had been in the 1960’s, to put a stop to this impending destruction, by rigidly enforcing the moral teachings of the Catholic Church by the use of military force and martial law and setting up a dedicated armed Catholic military morality police along the lines of the Crusades, the Inquisition and in a similar way to how Islamic Sharia Law is enforced in Muslim countries - had this been done far sooner, we would not be in our current situation today - yet our struggle for freedom was doomed from the start, given the infiltration and corruption of Irish freedom movements since the beginning of the 19th century and beset by opposition from the Catholic Church and traitors from within the ranks

The penal laws, Cromwell, cess, 1801 Act of Union and plantations are a few terms worth researching. For a more modern take on why Westminster rule and the island of Ireland don't mix terribly well try gerrymandering, Bloody Sunday and the troubles.
I don't mean to be a raving nationalist or anything, but it's worth understanding that there is a deep rooted and at times violent history of oppression, resistance and division in general which has given rise to the situation as it stands today.
Consider doing one now of what's left of real Dubs before they dissapear for good. It won't be long now.

Halcyon days.
Dublin was much nicer in 1988 than it is today. Its continuing decline today is alarming. There is no evidence of a vision for Dublin from those who should have one. We are now wealthier, but poorer at the same time, if that makes sense.
Every country has influences from other cultures. Britain has a heavy European influence from the likes of France even though most British people will not accept this and think Britain is some kind of cultural vacuum that only goes in one direction.
