The local elders and farmers staged a protest demonstration and demanded of the government to redesign the route of Swat Motorway to save their lands and orchards.
Holding banners and placards against the previous PTI government, they gathered outside Swat Press Club in Mingora and threatened to commit suicide along with their families if their demand was not met.
Local elders Wakil Ahmad, Fateehullah Khan, Sajjad Khan, Nizamuddin, Mohabat Khan, Zahid Khan, Fazal Karam, Meraj Bacha, Sultan-i-Rom, Zahir Shah Bacha and Rahmat Khan addressed the protesters.
They said they were not against the development of the area, but the second phase of the motorway was being constructed on their agricultural lands. “We have a small piece of agricultural land, which is the only source of our income and livelihood of our families. The government wants to snatch our livelihood from us by constructing the expressway on our lands,” they said.
The speakers said that initially the expressway was designed to be built along the Swat River. They said that it was a better route as it would have protected the river and the nearby population. “However, later on, the PTI government changed the route and planned to pass it through on the agricultural lands and residential areas,” they added.
They said that they had been protesting against change in the route of motorway for the last four years, but nobody listened to them. “We want development of Swat, but the wrong route of this project will deprive hundreds of families of their income. We know that hundreds of families will be badly affected by this project,” they said.
