  • Turkey's first museum, the Archaeological Museums of Istanbul, houses more than 1 million works that have survived to this day from ancient civilizations based on a vast geography from the Caucasus to Anatolia, Arabia, Mesopotamia.
Istanbul Archaeological Museums, located on the Osman Hamdi Bey slope that runs from Gülhane Park to Topkapi Palace on the Historical Peninsula, is described as a “museum complex”, it consists of three main sections: the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of the Ancient East and Tile Palace Museum.
The archaeological museums of Istanbul, which are closed on Mondays, are open from 09.00 to 20.00 in the summer; in winter it can be visited from 09.00-17.00. The archaeological museums in Istanbul have a Müzekart (museum visit card).
The construction of the gallery was initiated in the 19th century by a local artist and archaeologist named Osman Hamdi Bey. For many years he fought for the preservation of historical monuments and sought the adoption of a law that would prohibit the export of cultural property from Turkey.
Today in the museum we can see unique exhibits, and even if you are not interested in history, it is worth visiting here and seeing the most famous ancient originals, such as: a Sidonian sarcophagus depicting scenes from the life of Alexander the Great, a head from a snake column from Hippodrome Square, a sarcophagus depicting A weeping woman, a bust of Zeus and Alexander the Great, parts of statues from the Temple of Zeus in Pergamon and much more.
The Archaeological Museum is located in the historical district of Sultanahmet, in close proximity to Topkapı Palace and Gülhane Parkı. You can combine visits to these attractions, but keep in mind that a walk through Topkapi Palace takes at least 2.5 hours, and the archaeological museum has a rich collection, so you may not be able to do it in 1.5 hours.
If you are not staying in Sultanahmet, but a little further, then you can get to the Archaeological Museum by tram line T1 to the Gulhane or Sultanahmet stop, and then walk towards Topkapi Palace.
