- I have been getting requests to follow-up on certain animals that we introduced previously. I decided to make a video doing an update on all the animal elements on our homestead as well as our rotational grazing system in this video series.
In Part I, I give an update on the mama hen and her chick from earlier in the spring. I introduce you to our new alpha rooster. We revisit our mysterious rare chick. Also, you get to meet our pet piglet, Clara.

The circle of life. Tails story is followed by some new wonderful chicken stories. Chicken Little, the loner random exotic bonus chick, raised with the meat birds, rejected by the main flock, and now hanging out with the sheep is funny and sad, but totally unique. And that little piglet in the feed bowl just doesn't give a care about those sheep hulking over. Clara is another underdog story to root for. Awesome update video, and thanks so much for the recognition.
you're welcome! You earned it
Watching the animals eating together was so cute! Clara is over the top cute!!!
:)
Oh my gosh.. Blackbeard! I love his fuzzy feet, and I'm so glad he took up with the rams!:) It's fantastic that some of the babies with "issues" have gone to live with the sheep. I already love Queen Clara and Blackbeard - so you have to keep them forever for my entertainment! LOL :)
:)
Clara is the cutiest. Looks like you are doing a great job with her. Thanks for sharing.
I love chicken little's story.EDIT: I love the story about chicken little, his lambs, and the pigs. LOVE IT. YOU gotta get a pic of him on a lamb. Make something beautiful with the image. HE's a STAR!
OMG- your farm is going to become part farm and part rescue!!! Happy Day. High five little Clara.
I think this IS the happiest farm video I've ever watched. AND the music. Brilliant.
:) thank you!
You are a really good steward over the animals (and people) you care for and it shows. Keep up the great work my friend.
:) thank you
Hey Daniel! I have been traveling to see my kids and grandkids for the past month. I had a great time but missed you. I have caught up now on your videos. You have been doing so many great things. Thank you for all your information and fun videos. I really like curvaceous Clara!!!!
:) welcome back Pat!! I'm glad you got a lot of family time!
Omg so funny seeing all of the animals fighting over peas! Clara and Chicken Little are so cute! I would definitely follow their channel! Having a few pets balances out a good homestead! They fill the soul with joy. 👍
:) Indeed!
Clara, clara, what a gorgeous little girl. Glad you decided to keep her. tyfs Pat
What a great story about Chicken Little Blackbeard. I love farm animals. You have such a beautiful farm. I look forward to the day the American Farm tour hits your farm. I look more forward to the time we can come visit. Not sure when that will be. Hard to take a vacation when you have a homestead to run.
I know what you mean! Thank you
This was so awesome! It was like a book! A true tale of animals on the farm!
That little Clara is too stink in' cute! I think her own TH-cam channel is a great idea. It's funny how our animals drama kinda spills over and they make their own little groupings. The chickens especially have lots of drama! Hahaha! Great update. Thanks for taking us along.
:) you're welcome
Any suggestions for what we should name her channel? She has a lot of personality and seems to like the camera :)
Clara...the sheep pig!!! Great update. Looking forward to more.
Thanks Virginia!
You should come and meet her!
Oh my goodness, Clara the pig is SOOOOO CUTE!!!!
Great update, so nice to see the animals are in great condition! !!:)
Oh, Clara stole my heart! So cute, sweet, funny! Love her! So glad you took over her care.
me too! She is fun to have around :)
No update on LGD? Hope all is well....so enjoyed this video and the genuine love you have for your animals.
The last main one was very sad...but there was a minor update that was more upbeat. I hope things have continued to improve!
the next video has the update on Blue the LGD :)
My pyr mix pup loves chicken feed.In the mornings you'll see a big dog head surrounded by chickens, until i bring him out.I keep saying i'm going to take a picture!Oh my gosh, baby pigs are so cute!I love your compassion for the animals and for passing this along to your precious son.
I would keep Clare as farm mascot. She is adorable
how cute ;) Yes, the Adventures of Clara sounds like a great farmstead channel o.- I love how you are letting the "rejects" have a life too...thank you :)
:)
What happened to the sweet little pigglet Clara?
She is a pet at another homestead now with other sheep and pigs.
@@TheGrassfedHomestead wonderful! Thank you for responding.
Good job figuring out what's best for Chicken Little and Clara!!
Welcome to the family, Clara!
:)
Great update! Love hearing about the animals :0) I'm not a pig lover but Clara is stinkin cute!
she is! :) Thanks Jaime
The Adventures of Clara the Pig sounds like a great name.
:)
Now ya gotcha a PET hawg!! Y'll hafta give'er t'sumbody or keep'er around as yer own pet!!
im not sure if you have a problem with your animals flipping over their feed pans/bowls but when i was in 4h we would cut a 2'x2' pice of plywood and screw the rubber feed bowls to them so when the hogs would eat they were standing on the plywood and couldnt flip all the feed and waste it...great videos keep up the good work
not so much of an issue for us but good tip - thanks!
Clara the cantankerous!! That would fit in well with the overall theme of your ranch!!!!🤓
:)
the chicken looks like a brahma
good job guys. any ideas to extend a coop with heavy predator pressure?
I'm not really sure what you're asking
basically making the run larger an tips
I'm sure you've considered this, but beware of symptoms of any zoonotic diseases when caring for animals in your home. Looking forward to the eventual update on Blue (and Penny).
Indeed - We sanitized afterward. I know that wouldn't help me with a airborne virus but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do
Yayyyyy finally an update
Chicken Little....mebbe a Faverolle??
yes!
So glad to see Ashley and the piglet, Clara! (Was that from Dr Who? BTW?) I remember Ashley"s first reaction to the pigs lol 💜
no, it just popped in my mind. I never saw Dr. Who. Ashley was won over by Clara and the piglets but I think she feels the same as she originally did for the senior hogs
Bacon!
love her name!
thanks Joan!
i love clara. she is so cute
she is!
Caught the fifth toe at around 7:20. Definitely a Salmon Faverolle rooster.
I noticed that too after I made the video. Thank you!
Piglets are so cute! I'm afraid I would turn her into a pet too. I'm having to live vicariously though your chickens as my village does not allow them. Plus I have 5 herding breed dogs. The shelties probably would not be a problem but I don't trust my Australian Shepherds.
You should leave a link to the hatchery so people can find chicken little breed.
Salmon Faverolle
Awesome videos. Do you have a CSA?
we do not
Great job guys. Always love the vids
:) Thank you!
Good idea to keep Clara - when Buddy gets a little older, he can do vids of her. Just a thought. Did you All ever think of having a petting farm for kids from school to come visit if they don't see any farm animals? I'm not sure if a good idea or not.
It is a nice idea but not something we are considering
Will you keep Clara as a breeding sow?
No that's a terrible idea she's a runt you only keep the best of the best for a breeding sow.
Very true...I guess I didn't think that through. LOL...I just have a problem with butchering animals you name..other than names like bacon or T-bone!
Dolly Perry just realize that she won't grow to full size and might have health problem later on. Also you can't keep everything that has/had a problem as a pet it will suck dry valuable resources that could expand the business. Which farming/homesteading is secretly is.
I do understand that... :) I suppose I wouldn't have named it. But it is so easily done when you have to nurse them back to health...It is a tricky situation.
Clara may stay here as a pet.
Awesome
I think Chicken Little is a Salmon Faverolle
thank you! That seems to be the consensus
Hello Dan. Did you ever find out what Chicken little is? Besides being a rooster. ;) I love the music in this video. He has feathers on his feet like a cochin. Justin Rhodes may be Chicken Ninja Master but you are definitely Ninja Pig master. ;D Very good idea Ashley had to keep her and not to eat her. I just couldn't see her as pork loin. Loved the bloopers. lol
He is a Salmon Favorelle. Multiple viewers identified him as that. I looked it up and sure enough, he looks just like one.
Clara the wonder pig.
Yes! #ClaraPigletSuperstar
Do you happen to shear your llama?
I don't - she is on loan for awhile to us
Best video ever. "The daughter I'll never have." Lol
:) Thank you!
Where did you order your chicks from?
murray mcmurray
and meyer? The Lavender Orpingtons and Swedish Flower Hens came from Meyer and from My Pet Chicken
i think chicken little is some sort of faverole
salmon faverolle rooster looks like wat u have
Yes, it could be s Salmon Faverolle rooster. Check to see if he has 5 toes. If so, it probably is.
5 indeed!
A Salmon faverolle cockerel is your "free chick".
Thanks Tracy!
Chicken Little looks like a Salmon Faverolle
thank you! That seems to be the consensus
He could be a Araucana
you can make a channel for Clara. Could be a cute channel for kids. I saw on instagram some bird named Rhia or Rhea, and a dog with deformed jaw named Tuna they are just very cute lol.
if you take Sarah inside again you can walk her on the ceiling and sing spider pig lol
simpsons?
yes just having fun love what you are doing cheers
definitely a Salmon Faverolle
thank you! That seems to be the consensus
Do you have goats? I haven't watched enough videos yet but if you have goats at all their milk is like a universal donor for smaller animals. I imagine it would be good for pigs, I know for a fact it can full on replace puppy and kitten milk. Something to think about. If you don't have milk goats it can't hurt to get a couple. It would be good when trying to be more sustainable so you don't need milk replacement formula during future incidences.
Lol I should have kept watching you even mention that. Lol definitely something to think about getting in the future right? Having small to medium mammals on a homestead of farm it would make sense to have a couple. Goats milk is easier on people digestive systems too (and it makes awesome cheese) so it's not like it would go to waste. Then in case of emergencies you have access to it more on hand.
we are on goat milk now and it is working well. We don't have goats though and won't be getting any. I want to get into sheep dairy at some point
That works too at least you have a local supply you can get to. Not everyone has that. I'm not sure what sheep milk is like on other animals but I imagine it wouldn't be too much different to goat milk. Are there actual dairy sheep? I mean all mammals can produce milk but some animals have been bred to give more than their babies need so it's easier to share when they produce so much.
Might you keep Claira as a pet or fro breeding. She's so stinking cute!
And yes a claira series!
just a pet - I wouldn't be good to breed her
Chicken little DEFINITELY a Salmon Faverolle
chicken little is a salmon faverolle cockerel
thank you! That seems to be the consensus
One of my greatest fears is too many pets on the homestead chewing up resources.
I know right the 4 pet sheep, the half useful llama and now a pet pig. The save some money by culling or getting rid of them.
But, with them, he will get a following that will want to watch these pets grow and interact with his channel.
Carol V. A following does not pay that much as butchering or selling the animal does.
3 pet sheep (2 are turning into potential breeders) and Penny the llama is quite useful.
The Grass-fed Homestead
Should do an update on them and the lambs that you're going to keep but penny is owned by the sheep breeder surely she'll want her come winter. Because winter is coming!! 😈😈😈😈🐺🐺🐺🐺
he is most likely salmon faverolle
thank you! That seems to be the consensus
❤👍👏👏👏👏
chickens dump (wean)their chicks pretty young .
Clara is adorable! the "daughter I'll never have" comment makes us viewers very curious as to why. Are you guys not having any more children?
probably not
The Grass-fed Homestead sorry, that was none of my business
you should keep her as a pet
we might
She's our pet :)
Faveroller
Thank you!!
hand feeding cute Clara, watch out, you are on the road to veganism!
no way! She gets a pass but bacon is still on the menu
I understand the Let nature take its course mindset, but we humans have been intervening in nature for so long I believe that some of the problems that come up are because of that intervening and it's our duty to step in and help them out sometimes.
On that note, animals who have been rejected by their counterparts should probably be pets and taken out of the breeding cycle.
I'm sure that if I were a true homesteader, I would probably wind up with waaayyy more pets than normal 😄
yeah, we're not going to breed Clara
So...just making an observation..."she cute" that's from someone who said the pigs were ugly....how things change!!
indeed!! I made the same observation
The sows are very unattractive. I stand by my comments. But the piglets are precious.
Ashley O does that mean you'll cull her when she grows out!!
So you're saying there was hanky-panky between Cocky-locky and Henny-penny? And then Henny-penny abandoned Chicken Little? Homestead soap opera.
You should just keep her there is nothing wrong with having a few pets as long as you don't over do it but, ever then as long as you and your kids are well fed then have at it. Plus come on she adorable or you can always use her as breeding stock if she stays in good health.
Thank the Lord Clara ain't a great big'ol hog breed!!
I hate peas! lol. I'm fascinated that pigs like them. What's in them that they like?
They are high in protein
Get Clara spayed,tho...otherwise she gonna get with a boar and have trubble farrowing'er litter..she's prety small..
