That's the point. It's true that not everyone needs the additional power but if I choose to buy the pro model I will very likely be the kind of user to need it.
Exactly. MBA exists for people who don’t need the increased performance in video editing and photo manipulation. Now some cash strapped student or entrepreneur is going to buy an entry level MBP because that’s all they can afford and it’s outdated and performs worse than a Windows equivalent before they even unbox it.

@@borisdemelo Which makes his whole argument at the beginning even worse. He try's to justify the weak internals in the MBP by saying some people don't need/want the extra power and then explains exactly why it shouldn't be like this in a Pro MacBook. Because the Air is already designed for people who don't need the extra power.
But what doesn’t make any sense for me is the following: Apple decided to go for the 10th gen processor and DDR4X ram for the MacBook Air and even lowers the price whereas you have to pay significantly more to get those benefits on their MacBook Pros.
André Højgaard MacBook Air uses 10th Gen NG chip and MacBook Pro uses 10th Gen G chip. the NG chips are less powerful despite them being both 10th gen 10nm
Krishna Perneti it’s Apple but either way 10th gen cpus (high performing ones) runs way hotter than 8th gen cpus. Do you want to have ultra thermal throttling in the MacBook Pro again?
Imagine justifying a MacBook “Pro” having an outdated CPU because the new CPU’s only improve tasks like VIDEO EDITING and PHOTO MANIPULATION . You know......the tasks that many people use PRO MacBook’s for. Oh and then dropping a comment like “Many people don’t care for that in their laptop” as if the MacBook Air doesn’t exist for those people. The mental gymnastics used to justify Apple launching a brand new pro level laptop with outdated specs on the base model forcing people to spend more is disgusting. You’re way off the mark with this one.
Thank you. I agree he was way off the mark on this one. If I didn't want the power to push the limits, why would I even go for something so outlandish as a macbook pro.
Knock knock there are options for 10th gen cpu in the new mbp13. Look at the 1799 one. So Apple provides 8th and 10th gen AND the more expensive one is just in the range of the other manufacturers products.
Kairen Wang At a ridiculous premium compared to equivalent W10 products. Doesn’t justify Apple screwing over their entry level customers with outdated hardware.
This is just the update the 15 was made last year. The real update will be made by the end of the year. However Dave protecting Apple using 8th instead of 10th is just bad. The price is super high for the 13 either way, so Apple just wants to save cash and earn more.
Dave said that the difference between 8th and 10th gen is negligible, and it really is. Just because its called Pro it doesn‘t mean it needs all the bells and whistles. If you need the graphics horsepower on the go, go with the 16“. For what most other Pros use the Macbook, the 13“s specs are more than enough. You don‘t need a marginally better CPU to develop websites and software applications. For stuff like developing websites, even the Air is enough ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. In most cases your money is better invested into a RAM and storage upgrade rather than a marginally better CPU. If all you do is write school documents, a $350 iPad works great, no need to buy a laptop. If 10th gen was leaps and bounds better than 8th gen, or if they had gone with Ryzen 4000, then yes I‘d agree with you. But with these marginal performance differences, it honestly doesn‘t matter. Rather get more storage and RAM.
Jusung Lee if you need the internal GPU power, then yes. If you don‘t it honestly doesn‘t matter. And if you‘re serious about graphical/video stuff you‘d rather go with a 15/16“ that has a dedicated GPU, or invest the money in an eGPU.
Yeah sadly, it seems like that is pretty much the case. I do wish Apple had waited and come out with something better in the Summer or Fall, like a 14" MBP with a better display, better Webcam, and higher base specs.
The base model is pretty much meh. Only thing it's got going for it is the keyboard. I personally don't think it's worth getting the base. If you want the base model, you're frankly better off with the air. However, the 10th gen cpu model is a decent upgrade for someone who needs the better graphics performance. So with the 10th gen you get much better graphics, a slightly faster cpu, WAY faster memory and more too, double the storage, and the magic keyboard. I'm happy with that.
bear532 Except for this thing called cooling i’d agree with you but thermals are kinda important and will affect users who run even only somewhat demanding tasks

"Not everybody wants extra gpu power" well, this is the Pro version, which supposed to mean Professional. I think for professional work load you want that extra power. If you don't then maybe you don't even need the Pro version then
Kutyusz Games Yeah this is a “mAcBoOk pRo” but because of the way Apple distinguishes between their Air and Pro models (thanks to the trash cooling solution inside the Air), if you want a laptop that doesn’t burn your laps while you’re doing something even remotely heavy like watching 4K videos on Chrome, you’re gonna want to get a Macbook Pro even if you’re not a pro. And I bet most people buying products that have the “pRo” moniker attached to their name aren’t pro in the slightest bit.
Not all professionals need extra GPU power. Programmers & app developers for example really don't need the extra GPU power, so if they go for the lower end model, they won't be paying for what they won't use. Besides, plenty of reviewers have mentioned how the MacBook Air struggles with heavy tasks.
@jesus barrera Not really. The Macbook Air is sort of meant for light workflows, such as text editing. The base MacBook Pro is meant for professionals who don't need the extra GPU power, such as programmers. The higher end MacBook Pro is meant for professionals who need extra graphical power for their workflow, such as video editing and modelling.

I understand that not everybody needs that extra power with the 10th gen of Intel processor. I think Apple just sell what they couldn't sell with their last Macbook Pro and the butterfly keyboard. Hopefully, they will upgrade their Macbook pro by the end of the year with more significant refresh.
I guess most people do not buy MacBook Air, Pro, etc primarily for the specs. If they did, they probably wouldn't be buying Apple products at all. There are Windows laptops which are much cheaper, with equal or better specs. People mostly buy Apple products for the build quality, aesthetics, OS, assembly, etc. Apple focuses a lot on that. Not a lot of companies focus primarily on the build quality. For example, I've yet to see a laptop which has an equally good or better trackpad than a MacBook Pro, Air, etc. Never have I seen a laptop which overall looks and feel better than any MacBook. Again, just my opinion, but I can say that there are a lot of people just like me and will buy an Apple product mainly for the balance of specs, build quality, and everything that comes with it - especially the OS, which you're not going to get elsewhere. As for this Intel thing, Apple is stubborn as always and won't pay a lot for these newer Intel chips; thus they are delaying the upgrades. Hopefully, things will be lot different once they move on to their own chips. Anyway, Apple spends a lot of money trying to improve all these. If they focused more on the specs, the build quality would have to suffer a lot, provided that you keep the same price. And yes, Apple does try to profit from their products at the end of the day, just like any other company.
The saddest thing is that the Macbook Air 2020 would outperforme the 13“ Pro 2020 if it had a heat sink while it is cheaper. Thats just sad af and called a total dick move in bird culture.
The entry-level MBP just doesn't make sense. For the same price, you can get the new Air with more modern CPU, RAM, and double the storage. Yes, the Pro is more suitable for CPU heavy tasks, but at that price point you're settling for very basic specs that you wouldn't want if you're going to do CPU heavy tasks anyway.
I wish I could, too, but about five of the keys no longer print letters. Bummer! I tried compressed air, but they still don't work, and I don't want to buy a new keyboard for $250! Bad timing because Apple is transitioning from Intel processors to ARM-based processors soon I heard.

Can't really agree with that. As a developer I'm using a MBP 13" 2016 with two external 4k monitors. The big problem is exactly graphics power and RAM usage because of the way macos handles scaling. Exactly. MBA exists for people who don’t need the increased performance in video editing and photo manipulation. Oh and then dropping a comment like “Many people don’t care for that in their laptop” as if the MacBook Air doesn’t exist for those people. Finally i found this comment
@@philhinco if you need the horse power, pick anything but apple.

I suspect they'll stick to Intel until their own processors are ready. If the rumors are true, which i think they are, it just wouldn't make sense to figure things out with AMD as yet another contractor. it would save them so much $$$.

Stop justifying apple like that, don’t u know even their MacBook Air now using 10 gen intel chip and lower price .. people buying pro version of course expecting more but how the hell they still gonna put the old 8 gen chip from the least a year back to this new device.
Sanc Max the air might have 10 gen chips but because of the cooling issues it’s practically the same as the MacBook Pro
The cooling issues can be fixed but apple purposely done it to make the air a bit slight or just to distinguish both devices by cutting part of the cooling firmwares inside , but that's unrelated though to explain why they put 8 gen old chip back from 2018 or 2019.
Sanc Max Yeah “tEnTh gEn” lol, the Geekbench scores don’t say so.
Sanc Max Of course they put a worse thermal solution to distinguish between the Air and Pro models. They don’t their laptops that are advertised as “thin and light” to be fast or faster than the Pro models.
Cookie Monster for now entry level 16inch is obviously a better choice compared to buying those upgrades Apple offers for 13 inch MacBook Pro, which is a clean refresh in every way not like this one.
I don’t understand the argument Dave. It’s simple, Apple “updated” their MacBooks and made little changes to the low end version, and big changes to the high end. Either the high end versions were overpriced before, or the low end versions are overpriced now. Either way sucks

You obviously don't know to whom you talking to. Dave is a well known Windows laptop lover, eventhough he's using a Macbook at the same time. People started accusing stupidly just because the person they watched not having the same views as theirs. Pathetic! And you also didn't watch the test between the old 2019 Pro 13 base model that crushed the Air 2020 10th gen in medium to intensive work - so much for the 10th gen & newer lpddr4 Ram! I don't always aggree with Dave. But he has lots of valid points in this video.
@@sttv1570 dude you have no idea what you talking about of course the 8 gen cpu on the pro will crushed the Air cuz the Air is using the Y version of the 10 gen Intel's cpus which is a low-powered variant while the pro uses the U version which is Intel's workhorse, compare the 8 gen on the pro with a 10 gen counterpart like the one on the Surface Laptop 3 and the results will be different, sure the Macbook Pro will fare good but just because of MacOs is like comparing Iphone and Android, still there is absolutely no excuse for Apple to not put a 10 gen cpu on the new Macbook Pro specially when it comes at the same price point as previous versions which had the latest cpus when they debuted.
Yordan Montero You are talking like Apple only introduced one type of 13 inch model. If you care so much about 10th gen and lpddr4 Ram, Apple does provide that selection in the newly launched Pro 13, albeit at the higher tier. Just fork out extra cash. Oh you didn't want to? Then thats not Apple problem. The choice is there, if you don't have the budget, just go elsewhere. Heck, a windows laptop with Quad HD screen, great design, great processors also don't come cheap today.
So Apple didn’t want to absorb the cost of the expensive processor and knew raising the price won’t sell the laptop so they put in old processors? Pathetic!

With negligible CPU performance in the last 3 years that's out of your control and you want to force consumers to pay more because of your vendor? Hey, the 10th Gen models are there and like Dave said, with a fatty price tag. But if you don't need or want it, just go with the 8th Gen model.

But yea its depends on user
I have a 16" and I was worried the new 14" would make me regret my purchase. But by keeping the 13" screen, and seeing the price and specs difference, as you said, a 16" is such a better proposition if you don't need a smaller and lighter laptop.
I understand that not everybody needs that extra power with the 10th gen of Intel processor. But for a brand like Apple which are premium devices, when you pay more than $1,000 you wanna get the last specs of hardware.

Yet the 2020 Air comes with a 10th gen CPU, albeit they are the Y variants.
Strange you didn't mention this.

Currently I'm using an eGPU but the workflow is hampered quite significantly with it (wait for disconnect, apps closing and reopening, etc.) and the performance difference isn't really worth it so I'm going to get rid of it. I sure hope they'll put a dedicated gpu in the 14" refresh (if there will even be any), otherwise the only option is the 16".
I was so close to having the perfect ecosystem
